Putter smores? Restoring old Benti

Got bored so decided to attempt a refinish of an older Bettinardi proto. Got the putter and loved how it rolled and the overall look but the finish was wayyy to shiny gold. Didn’t want to pay a fortune so I sanded the gold plate off, but again too shiny / too much glare (raw stainless)..

 

tried torch it with the crappy torch we use for dabs (yes), but that sucked. So decided to turn the fire place on. I’ll let you know how this ends up…

As a brief update…the head just  fell off from the shaft and the head is nicely cooking in the fire. Thinking about it now, I’m assuming this is why the first step is to take the shaft off from the head..the heat separates the head from shaft?

No specific order in the pics below, but this is how it ended up. Actually don't mind the color and think its kinda cool. May end up re doing it, but set it up a bit better to make it so a bunch of ash and stuff doesn't get on it. May have gotten it too hot as well. Not really sure but it was fun sorta.

I never said it was good… lol. I may try to actually do it correctly or just clean it and get it refinished by someone who knows what they are doing

Proper torching is worth learning if you're going to do more than one club, but you'll have to buy a real (propane) torch to do it. Great prep is great results too, don't skimp on the early steps.

It's not toast not like you took a drill or grinder to it. Also probably just ash making it look worse.

 

Lots of guys can refinish that but also depends what you want too.

Yea for sure it’s fine. I bet I could get it back down to the raw stainless…I want to shave weight off it anyways

Can't get over the statement "the only torches in the house we use for dabs." I see and recognize you dude. Respect. 🙂  

 

Reminds me a great deal of the time in college that we decided to step up my house's "hot knives" game, and our best laid plans resulted in shorting out our stove.

 

Needless to say, we did a lot of outdoor cooking that year.

 

This seems like a similar experience.
