Square Golf Launch Monitor

Purchased mine today, hopefully it's in my sim bay by Christmas.

Few things I can provide as another data point:

- Stock Square ball vs Premium ball with aftermarket stickers placed on it in the 'Square' pattern

- Comparison vs Hawk/Trackman

I likely won't be running this on GSPro for now but if I find the stock courses or range very lacking, I might go thru the hassle of setting that up.

Yes.

The primary reason is the camera technology used in the Square Golf launch monitor, which can be negatively affected by intense sunlight. Kinda kills my wanting to use this. That's all I have is outdoors and nicely flat mowed 5 acres of land.

My initial thoughts after having the unit for a week

The good: Small, very easy to use and set up. Stock courses for sim golf are decent, and I feel like the unit is relatively accurate. For the price, I am pretty happy. Ball speeds and backspin seem really accurate.

The bad: Something seems off with the software - Numerous times the unit tells me I have an out to in club path with a face open to target, yet I'm producing a draw flight with draw axis spin. Either the path is reversed (so when it says out to in 3*, it actually means in to out 3*) or something really weird is going on. FWIW, even when my swing was at it's absolute worst, I was barely out to in. I've almost always had an in to out path, and when I was on GCQ a few weeks ago, I was hovering around 2-4* in to out. (IM LEFT HANDED)

Other small gripes about native sim golf is that the green speeds are insane. Stimp 8 rolls like 10 or more. Auto putt feature is ridiculous - so far in my experience, you will 2 putt every green no matter what. 4.1ft away? 2 putt. 65 ft away? 2 putt. They should enable something like what Trackman has where you will make putts based on your handicap. Scratch player should not 2putt 100% of the time from 4ft. Same for the opposite, if you're 65ft+ away, you should probably be 3 putting that 10-20% of the time. Unless they start making some software updates to the native golf app, I am going to really have to consider GSPro. I told myself I wasn't going to due to budget reasons, but I might need to save up because I don't find that situation to be very realistic.

Does anyone know if a GCHawk would cause interference issues if used simultaneously with this unit? I'd like to test the unit overall vs a high end optical system and also see how the new updates effect the readings from the Pix and Truvis balls.

So far it would seem like using after market dots on whatever ball you want is the going to give you the best results BUT the Pix pattern was only a little bit less accurate on spin, maybe within 3-4%. As long as ballspeed was still good, I don't see this as an issue given the unit costs $700. Truvis was about 10% different which may cause some issues but still isn't that bad given putting on stickers is a bit annoying and they cost around $1.50ea when factoring shipping/tax.

Just following up to see how you are liking the Square.  I'm considering this for a budget Sim.  Indoor Golf Shop just posted their packages and the SIG10 with Square has me really close to pulling the trigger.  Did you wind up going with GSPRO?

The latest update seemed to make the flight and ball data a bit better. There's still a few hiccups they need to address but for $700, you won't find a better value.

The biggest issues I see are ones that you'd probably expect with a $700 LM vs something several thousands of dollars

- Ball speeds on longer clubs seem to be under reported. However, you can manually boost your carry distance inside the software if you want. I find that ballspeeds on driver are 4-5mph lower than what I see on Trackman, but thats $20k vs $700. I use the +5% boost when Im hitting driver.

- Club data is not accurate but that could be my set up. I'm always an in to out path player but the unit generally reports that I swing out to in with longer clubs, and slightly in to out with my mid irons. Overall, I don't pay attention to club data because the simulated flight that is shown on screen still looks correct. I've sent my data to Square and let them know something is up.

Ordered mine, finally got it set up and tested it out.  I actually used the swing stick inside initially and over the past few days, just because I couldn't resist doing something with the new toy... it was kinda fun, and I could see making games out of it with the kids.  But this was the first time hitting for real.

The provided balls are hard as a rock.  My garage is on the (very) chilly side right now so that didn't help, but I'll echo what others have said that they are pretty bad.  Will be picking up a sleeve of the Pix or whichever ones they announced will work now.

Only hit SW through 6iron, but came away impressed so far.   I wasn't making the cleanest contact, and it definitely confirmed that.  But those that I felt I hit clean all had expected results.   Spin +/- 500rpm, Carry all seemed in line with my expectations for the clubs, +/- 5yards.   (But with hitting a rock, and the garage being about 40-45deg I'm not "calibrating" based on that data).

The driving range software was OK to good.  And Many have commented on the quick response of the unit... agree and appreciated.

As temps improve I'll break out hybrids and woods, and see how the faster ball speeds react.  But initial thoughts are pretty darn good.

Side note, I've had an R10 in the past and this was soooo much easier to set up.   Didn't need all the space, didn't need to be constantly fiddling with app and connectivity issues.   Everything just worked, and worked the first time.   (Even updating the firmware was super easy)

Does it work with any of the Pix balls or just the original orange & black triangle version?

I ordered the SIG10 Square package from Indoor Golf Shop and got it setup this past weekend.  I don't have any previous sim experience with another setup but I can say I am very impressed by this little unit.  The experience is amazing from putting to driving...all of it.  I love it!  I've been using the 5% boost for a premium ball (TP5X Pix ball) and the distances seems pretty good.  The native software is good as well for what it is.  I'm a big fan of this little guy!

Another quick update.  I finally got my hitting mat delivered this week (SIG Pro Softy 4x7).  Now my sim is complete and I'm very happy overall with the Square setup.  I'm not a terrific golfer (12ish handicap) and I don't hit it a mile but the game play experience for me is excellent with this unit.  My buddies that play better than I do and hit it a mile also love it.  It's crazy how good the chipping and putting is on this thing.  I would still recommend this to anyone looking for a value setup!

I decided to get this and try it out. I have a Mevo Plus and still use it. For hard core practice and data review it is great. It does struggle in my limited garage space with the usual suspects - spin numbers on high ball speeds and little chips and putts. So not great for simulation in my space. I’ve got about 9’ of ball flight. Will continue to use it outside and for iron practice inside.

Enter the square LM. Been very impressed. Easy to set up and the ball data has seemed spot on. Initially used the square balls and the spin data looked good but I was absolutely tearing the cover up with 3/4 wedge shots. The balls don’t seem very durable. Got a 3 pack of the TP5x pixs balls to take there place. Played nine holes on Awesome golf last night and didn’t have one shot that I thought was off enough to question. Missed 2 shots altogether though. Overall very happy as I would see some spin numbers on ball speeds over 130mph that were clearly wrong when using M+ in my garage.

I won’t use it for club data so the squares accuracy there doesn’t matter to me.

Thinking I’ll try GS Pro next - but have to get a gaming computer. In the interim will play the square courses. This little unit was the perfect solution for my current set up.

Does the Square save data in the app for review afterwards or do you only get data in real time?

just get any laptop with a discreet graphics card or any laptop with an amd apu gs pro isnt that demanding unless your trying to project a 4k image.

I don't know about saying all that. It may not be demanding. But your computer should at least be capable of running it at 1080p or it will not run smooth. At least the bare minimum follow what GS pro suggest to run at 1080p

1080p is easy for laptops with discrete gpus and laptops with amd apus the main issue with asking someone to get a gaming pc is right now a mid range graphics card for a gaming pc can cost you 700 dollars.

I know folks are running GS Pro on less than the official spec on their website but I would like to future proof it to some degree. I would get at least a 4060 card or equivalent. That said for now 1080p would be fine.

E6 Apex has some pretty beefy requirements. Trackman’s software requirements are crazy. It is just going to keep requiring more so I’m not going to go with the minimum.

unfortunately the 4060 equivalent's are delayed and will be scalped for high prices till the summer. ai, tarrifs, and nvidia have put a huge dampener on buying a graphics card for anything other than production. if you had been in the market in november you would have been able to get something that could do 1440p for under 600 but now 1440p is going to be around 1k unless amd sales alot of 9070xt's. and i would never consider intel's b580 even though it usually is competitive with a 4060 not enough people have those cards to help someone trying to troubleshoot problems in LM software.

Has anyone found after these latest updates, that the ball speeds are still coming up low compared to other monitors? Also has anyone noticed any spin changes when using the club shaft markers to pick up club head data, and also possible spin changes when using tp5 pix now vs the provided square balls? I hit probably 30 drives on my friend's square with 2 different drivers and the spin never changed from 2510-2550.

Are you sure the unit was set to measure spin (using the correct ball)? If it was set to calculate spin and you deliver the club pretty consistently it was using the club data to estimate the spin.

Does it calculate the spin using club data if you don't have the shaft tape on? I never looked into his settings thoroughly, but I will definitely check that next session.

Without the club markers and normal balls the unit will use other non club data to estimate back spin - but side spin will not be estimated. With club markers both are estimated.

I can say without a doubt, ball speeds for *longer clubs* are certainly lower on the unit vs other high end units. I can say anecdotally, that mid iron type shots, might be ever so slightly lower vs high end units, and  that wedges and other partial type shots are basically 99% accurate.

I hit range balls today at a lesson using trackman4 and my 8 & 9 out of 10 quality strikes was about 123 ball speed... At home on my Square, my 8 and 9's and TP5 pix balls are about 119 ball speed. I carried range balls today in 50F* weather around 173-177 and I need to absolutely pure them on the Square to get that carry.

With driver, it's just magnified. Direct testing vs a TrackmanIO, I was seeing 5% difference on carry and 8-10% on total. When I set Square software to +5%  and use measured ball data, the carry would match, and the total would be about 5-6% less. I believe in Square software, boosting the ball will add mostly just ballspeed, and then algorithm uses that increase to then calculate the carry and total.

I find my distances to be better using GsPro. In GsPro I will hit the 7i right around 172-174. You can add 'boost' on the range by changing elevation, but there's nothing you can go for playing official tournaments such as SGT.
