custom putter work

Recommended Posts

I've just been wanting a newport 2 style putter with only a dot sight line, obviously Scotty doesn't offer this on his non tour newport 2's. I randomly came across a guy on instagram who does custom work on putters like filling in stamping, flange lines etc. with welds, grinding it down and finishing it off. Got me thinking that maybe my best route would be to send someone who does good work a special select/super select to remove the flange line and add a dot. Maybe some other stuff like remove the face milling. Anyone have some good recommendations to send the putter to for this custom work?

There are a lot of putter makers that can make you a custom like that for less than a Scotty plus the work to remove the alignment lines. Unless you have to have a Scotty.

who would you recommend? Looks like it would be like $500 just to remove the flange line with that guy I saw on Instagram. Couldn’t get this work done and not remove the obnoxious Scotty Cameron on the face. Add in other stuff like removing stamping, remove face mill and adding a dot probably like $1,200 just for the work. Buying a putter to send, I’d probably be in it $1,500 total. Don’t mind paying it just interested in best option.

Would definitely be cheaper to go the custom route.  Lots of options there as Matt said. Removing a flange line is a lot of work, which is why most won’t do it and it’s almost impossible to do it perfectly unless the manufacture is the one doing it and has a fixture where they just refill the flange

For this amount, I would custom all day any day.   If yours is a retail scotty, 1K plus is a lot to rework a chinese made putter.  I can understand it you sink a lot of birdies with it but even then, after the re face mill etc, it just wont play the same and it may lose the magic you find in it now.

The putters absolutely are not made in China. What does a set of irons have to do with the putters?  Cameron’s uses 2-3 machine shops in San Marcos, CA.

CNCPT is Titleist highest and most expensive range and its made in China.  So if they make their highest and most expensive product in China, what more retail putters that cost less than a single CNCPT head?

As for the San Marcos, could be, I don't dispute that for their custom shop stuff.  HOWEVER, may still be milled in China and finished here?  Their retail stuff however....

But hey, if you want to think its made in the US... power to you.  Titleist region rep here has told me where they make their stuff, maybe not all but a lot of their stuff.  That said, my info is pre covid so things may have changed and Titleist may have decided to pull all their manufacturing back to a much higher cost base with no apparent product quality benefit.  No skin off my back regardless, I already have my CNCPT irons and have never fancied scotty putters even the cirlce Ts....

Your logic makes no sense, every OEM has their irons made in China or Asia, they have the facilities to do so. If they made the CNCPT irons in the USA they'd cost 1k a head.

Also the current SC putters have "Made in USA" on them and there is this branch of the US government called the FTC who will fine a person or company if that product doesn't meet their "Made in USA" standards and Acushnet the most litigious OEM is going to follow those guidelines.

And I'm not saying this as a SC fan boy, I think everyone know where I stand with SC putters.

No worries.  There are also JDM stuff that says Made in Japan coming out of China as well.  If you guys say scotty putters are all made in USA, they are all made in USA....  No need for anyone to get their knickers in a twist.. I concede and we can all move on.

No company makes irons or woods in the US. But putters are 100% milled in the US and have always been made in the US.
