Need auggestion to replace my Callaway MD4 Jaws 50° wedges

Jackal

Recommended Posts

I have a Callaway MD4 Jaws wedge.

It has served me well for the last 4 ??? years

I hit it more  than my other wedges.

Sadly, it's really wearing  out.

Looking at the new Cally wedges and they have the Opus, and I don't like it.

Cally has the cavity back ones that don't appeal at all.

I  have looked at slightly used Callaway  wedges like mine, but I want to buy some new ones.

Mine is a 50° with 10° bounce.

I see the Cleveland RTX and they look good.

The Taylormade have a nice look, too.

The Ping wedges don't feel right. The 12° bounce kills me. It's OK on my sand wedge.

What are some wedges that I need to look at for a direct replacement for my Calloway?

I want to buy one  and go play without having to change my swing.

My son has Vokey wedges and he kicks my @$$ with them, but I can't hit them.

They feel like someone else's clubs.

Thanks for any suggestions

I know the people here have some experience  and good suggestions .

Opus is great. Best feeling wedges I have hit

Will second this, my Opus 52 is the best feeling club in my bag! If they made the full face/hi toes in Opus i'd jump on those vs my TM's in the other wedges too.

Cleveland and TM wedges will give you something similar to what the Callaway MD4 offers.

As you say, Pings tend to be a bit different - generally offering a much heavier/dense head that calls for less "action" in the delivery. In other words, the more handsy you get, the worse they perform. Mizuno tends to take a similar approach in the "S" series of wedges.

If you'd like an outlier - the Wilson Staff wedges offer a pretty attractive package that really favors a more "active" chipping/pitching technique.

I believe the OP has already stated he does not like the Opus so perhaps it is already ruled out?

Yeah, I've felt the Opus wedges in a store,  but wasn't able to hit them.

They also had the plastic still on them.

If I get a chance,  I'll try them before ruling them out.

I really like the looks and feel of the MD wedges.

I am seriously not a TM guy - but I've played a few versions of the MG wedges in rental sets and really liked the performance. They are a solid option.

They look really good.

I would buy my Callaway wedges again online, but I really want to see and hit any others.

If I can find someone with TaylorMade wedges,I'll hit some and see.

Yeah, I would give them some consideration - and please take note of my typo in the original response. I was intending to refer to the Taylormade "MG" wedges - not the Callaway "MD" wedges.

They don't make this easy, do they????

In any event, I've got limited experience with the MG 2 and 3's. They worked well.

I figured you were talking about the MG.

Thanks for clarifying,  anyway.

I didn’t like the look in store of the opus and then I got a bargain on the platinum in a 54 to try and man am I impressed. So much so I’m now looking to get the 48 to replace my mp243 gap. Haven’t even hit the non platinum version and down to buy blind. Also thinking of getting the 60T.

Thanks for that info. As they start showing up , I may get to hit one form someone I know, or a slightly used one in a golf shop.

That platinum might change my mind.

The ones at the local shop are all still in plastic.

They don't look too appealing, and I can't tell from hitting them inside with the plastic on.

I don't believe they do the platinum in the lower lofts, so you may be out of luck there. I've played the MD4, MD5, and Jaws Raw wedges. I don't mind the way the OPUS looks and will likely try them when they hit callaway pre-owned. I may be one of the few that preferred the MD5 out of all those. I've also tried Cleveland RTX4 and ZipCore, Those didn't stick in the bag too long for me. I've tried vokey's too. SM7, 8, and now 9. I Really like the SM9. The stock shaft in Callaway's wedges is lighter than the stock vokey shaft but I've seen several SM9 and SM10 wedges available off the rack with lighter weight shaft options, maybe worth seeing how those feel.

Ok, thanks for that info.

That helps .

I'll have to check my shafts, but one of mine has an S300 and the other an S200. ( 50° & 56°).

I like the way they perform with those shafts and lofts.

The shaft on the vokeys even if just labled BV Wedge is usually s200 or s300 so a 130g shaft. I mentioned that as most of the stock shafts on the callaway are S200 but are actually the 115g version so they are lighter. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Does your iron set feature a GW? might be a good replacement if it flies OK for you.

for the 50 there's no competition

If you don't mind "cheating" - Cleveland CBX Zipcore, prior or current up to you - absolute cheat sticks

Wilson Staff 2021 - you can buy 2 for the price of one vokey - the stock DG120 is incredible, super ez to flight down or hit moon balls - only downside is i have found all wilson forged products wear super fast, i had the same issue with srixon gw as well

TM MG4 - more custom options, if you like a smaller head order the 48 bend to 50 or vice versa with a 52

Thanks for that info.

I used to play the Cleveland wedges from 2000- 2012.

They made me look better than I was.

After that, the new ones lost their feel -touch.

I will definitely  try the newer ones out.

I've heard good things about the Zipcore.

I use my 50 more than the other wedges.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks for all the info.

I have bought new wedges.

After hitting some new and slightly used ones and going to a demo day, I chose the vokey wedges.

I bought a SM9 -60° M grind from Titleist Pre-owned.

They said it was used/excellent condition.

It was new with the stickers still on it.

Plastic removed from the face.

97% condition.

I used it today and it is great!!

I bought (2) Vokey wedges on eBay.

A guy was selling an SM 10 -52° F grind 8° bounce , and an SM 10- 56° S grind with 10° bounce.

Only played 2 rounds .

All have the stock BV shaft.

From trying out different wedges, the BV shaft seems to have a great feel for what I need.

Thanks again for all the helpful advice.
