Bending lie of irons

playit

Recommended Posts

Found a set of Titleist t350 irons that are 1 deg flat and I need up, not flat. Questions...

- do OEMs manufacture iron heads to various lie angles or are they manufactured all to standard and then bent if a custom order comes in?

- how many degrees upright could these be bent from 1 deg flat and not compromise the iron?

- does a shop have to remove a head from an shaft to bend it? These have Recoil graphite shafts.

- how much do you think an Edwin Watts shop would charge to bend irons?

- do you think 1 deg flat vs. 1 deg upright can be 'felt' by most golfers?

TIA!

July 2024 back story for posts: I quit 20 yrs ago after left shoulder rotator cuff surgery didn't work. Tried again ten years ago, again hung it after a few months trying due to pain. Late July 2024, trying again but still enduring shoulder pain (and from other old injuries!). Rotator cuff surgery scheduled for Jan 2025. Used to be a golfaholic, got to scratch and better around age 50, love the game, aging ain't for sissies!

Some OEMS have different castings and forging for different lie angles.

I have gone +5 up multiple times and up to 4 flat with the correct heads. Some heads can be bent farther than others. You have to be careful with the chrome and plating when going to extremes. When I'm teaching others to bend clubs I give them a super soft wedge forging I keep around and we go roughly 15* flat and 15*. I then give them a cheap casting and its barely possible to do a few degrees without breaking. It really all comes down to the specific head makeup.

You do not have to remove a head to bend it. Its a very easy process, however you want to make sure who is doing the work is precise and has a track record of good work.

I have seen $3-$10 per club depending on the type of club.

2 degrees difference absolutely has an effect on strike and ball flight.

- how many degrees upright could these be bent from 1 deg flat and not compromise the iron? Titleist specifies +/- 2° from standard is the max when ordering.

- does a shop have to remove a head from an shaft to bend it? These have Recoil graphite shafts. No, in fact the shaft needs to be installed when bending and measuring.

- how much do you think an Edwin Watts shop would charge to bend irons? Best to call them for an accurate, up to date, price.

Yes.

OEM manufacturers do not have different heads with different Lie angles. They bend them to fit the Golfer. And after a season or two it makes sense to control the lie angle anyway. Titleist 350 heads are cast, you can not bend them a lot, but 2 down to 2 upright is never a problem.

If one 'should' be 1 deg up and his irons are 1 deg flat, would you think shots would tend to fly to the right?

1° from what?

There’s no industry standard so 1° could and is usually different between brands.

How you know they need to be one 1° up? Was he measured in a fitting or did he do the dry eraser test?

I'd suggest that you don't change a thing until you've hit quite a few shots. As others have said, there's no "standard" for lie among OEMs. Hit 'em and then bend 'em, not the other way around. 😉

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the skill set which a player must have to play competitive golf.

Yes. "Too flat" would tend to start to the fade side and "too upright" would tend to go to the draw side.

Keeping in mind what GoGo said, that every manufacturer has their own "standard lie", which could be different even from iron to iron in their own lines.
