I usually tell new golfers when they start playing tournaments: if you want to belong in competitions you must count all your shots and keep the pace of play. Your golf level will be almost irrelevant. But if you improve, you’ll belong a bit more.

The popularization of that comes from Peter Aliss, while a top player, (and then a commentator)  putting was the weak part of his game.  Often attributed to him as in “Hit it Aliss” , however it goes further back than him.

When the Maestro Roberto Devicenzo was in his last years of competitive golf he used to play most big pro tournaments in Argentina. He’d always be paired with the hot players of the moment and, on the first tee Roberto would seriously tell these kids “play well, but don’t beat me.” He’d finish the sentence with a big grin and a wink. People loved his act.
