10 round Titleist GT2 driver review

Recommended Posts

Had a driver fitting Friday.  GT2 8* with Ventus black 6x won.  I tried GT2, GT3, Qi35 and all the other LS head of the major OEMs.  Top 3 were GT2, G440 LST, and cobra ds adapt LS.  GT3 and QI35 LS were the farthest but mishits and overall dispersion/variance disqualified them.  It really came down to GT2 and G440 lst.  Feel wise I was surprised that I preferred G440lst but that head just wants to go left.  It’s a predictable draw every single time.  But the GT2 impressed on every aspect.  I’ve always been in low spinning heads and have never had a Titliest driver (I’m not loyal to any brand, I just want performance).  It blew my mind that this more “forgiving” head matched up and even beat out the low spinning heads.  My on course swings created consistent and predictable flights.  For fun, I even went after it a couple times and it still held up with amazing launch conditions.  For the first time in my life I’ll be in a Titliest driver and couldn’t be more excited for the season to come.

What did you find at the fitting with both heads? Coming from the TSR2?

Sorry, @jaffabell. I had started typing a response on Friday, never finished it and then shut the laptop for the weekend.

For a full picture, I think it sensible to say I have gone back and forth between the 2 and 3 heads over the years. I have been 2 in 915, 917 and TSR and 3 in 909, 913 and TS. The 2 heads have over the years become nicer and nicer to my eye and I am a big fan of the shape of the TSR2. I fully expected to come out with a GT2.

What I have found over the years is that the 3 model has been slightly longer than the 2 but I have ended up in a 2 when the drop off in forgiveness has been too much. So for example in the 917 whilst the D3 was a little longer, the mishits were dropping off so much that it wouldn't be sensible for me to game it on the course. From what I found, the 2 was still more forgiving than the 3 but the drop off was much closer than I have found in previous iterations. As a result, I felt that I was getting the best of both worlds with the 3. Longer than the 2 and about as forgiving. Some of that might have been in part due to changes with the loft and shaft.

I have shortened my swing quite a bit over the last year. I was overswinging horrendously (various reasons) but I have consciously tried to shorten it up. That in part necessitated a change in shaft. I simply was not loading it in the same way that I was. My TSR had initially been set up at 8.25 but crept up 9 in the last 6-7 months. I was hitting far too many dive bomber shots off the tee. I was living in and around 1500-1600 RPM. I was kinda getting away with because of high launch (I hit up around 5 degrees on tee shots) but I had gotten to the point where that was becoming hard to sustain and the bad ones were not just bad, they were awful. Hit a couple of those in the fitting. One which stuck in my head was an 893rpm knuckle ball.

We concluded that my shortened swing whilst great for my overall game had totally changed the way I was loading the shaft and the loft that I needed to present at impact. My fitter is a really good friend (known him for 20+ years), I go to him for lessons and he has been a regular playing partner over that time so he knows my game.

We started up with my shaft in a GT2. In my current loft it was not up to much. We changed loft first in that and went to 10 and that helped but strikes whilst in the middle where a combo of either too low or high in the face.. We then tried the shafts. Hzrdus was OK, never really been a lover of it, in driver but this years model felt nice. Again, my misses were pretty centered but either low or high on the face. From that, my fitter thought that we should try GT3. He instantly put it up to 10.75. In the Hzrdus strike was good, definitely going in the right direction. Kept the shaft but added a couple grams to the front and it was getting very nice. I then tried a couple of Even Flows, have really liked those in the past but the strike seemed to move around the face quite a bit so we binned those. We then went into the Tour AD DI. I have to admit, conscious of the extra cost, I didn't want to hit it well but my goodness, it was just perfect. Tee shots were launching were I wanted them to and there was none of the diving out of the air early that had been plaguing me. This setup became the benchmark. I then tried Tensei 1K blue. This was good! Strike was good, felt nice but felt like it was a little too soft at the bottom and although strike was really good, every shot I hit with it drew off line. Took a little break and then went back to the Tour AD and it was obvious it was the one.

Took the same one out on the course yesterday and it was incredible. Felt a bit stiff and tight yesterday. Three layers didn't help either but I hit it so good. Not having to rush the transition at the top to try and load it like I was doing with my old shaft was giving me more time at the top which is just what I have been looking for and even with a tightish back I was able to turn through and the results were amazing. The extra loft even on a windyish day by the seaside was no hassle and to be honest, that extra loft swing wise made it feel easier if I did want to knock one down. Honestly, cannot wait for my own to arrive and as an extra bonus, my fitter was able to confirm that Titleist offer the Tour AD DI in black which is even better.

Yes: GT3 vs TSI3 and TSR3 was for me all so similar that I couldn't really justify an upgrade.

GT2 though was immediately better on dispersion and forgiveness without sacrificing anything.  I did put in a lighter weight AND add lead tape closer to the face to lower spin slightly.

Probably the most interesting part of the GT series was that GT3 was consistently longer than GT2 by a few, but the high face, low spinners were a little longer from GT2. Overall though, TSi, TSR and GT were all within a few yards on distance and dispersion. I just don't see the difference as you get more and more shots in the data set. They're all awesome, I just don't see the point of switching if you're in TSi or TSR unless you just like shiny things, then power to you.

Yeah, the difference being that the gt2 shape was made to match the 3 models.  So now you can get a 3 looking head at address that performs like the 2.  I did not hit the 2 models well previously but the gt2 was a different story.

This is where I'm at - I've been gaming a TSi3, but the mishits aren't very forgiving....I've been leaning towards the GT2, but just want to make sure its worth it before shelling out the cash. If I'm hitting even a couple more fairways a round, I feel like it would be worth it.

I just switched from a 10 TSi3 to a 10 GT2. I was most impressed by how straight it flew. Even on misses it held its line really well. Spin was also down slightly across the board during my fitting. Best shots I didn’t see much of a difference (TSi is such a fast driver), but was seeing a little higher flight and significantly less curvature on a miss (both heel and toe side). Also love the feel of the GT, felt more solid.

Does the GT launch about the same as the TSi3? I was thinking about going from TSi3 10* to GT2 9*

I went straight from a TSi3 10* (playing at 9.25 with a DI6) to a GT2 10* playing at 10 with a Ventus Blue 6 - the Ventus Blue probably spins less than the DI, but still - essentially went loft to loft. It is incredible.. I would say the launch is similar, but with just a touch less spin. If you feel you spin the TSi3 a little too much in your best strikes, the 9* could be good.. otherwise, don't discount the 10*.

This is exactly where I've been. I wasn't sure if I wanted to switch from my TSi3 but the forgiveness on non-perfect hits (especially bottom of the club) are really impressive. The best hits will be faster and about 5 yards longer, too. Thankfully now they can be found on the BST so not quite the investment I made getting early last year at full price.

Do you find the GT2 difficult to work?  At my skill level I'm 9/10 times I'm only trying to hit the ball in the fairway, but it's nice to be occasionally be able to try and hit it low, high, fade, draw as hole can require.  My experience with the previous "2" models is they really just want to do one thing - tough to really work them at all.

@UNCThomas23 I would test the same loft in the GT2 as you had in the TSi3. I feel like it launches in the same window with more forgiveness on mishits and much lower standard deviation on spin.

@JPS_17 thanks for the input! Sorta was what my gut said, I just bought a 10* head from classifieds to play around with.

I wanted to keep my tensei raw white because I have a 6s that I tipped an inch and don’t really want to find that middle ground again. I’m really in between stiff and x stiff in most shafts and it’s no fun.

Not really - I can hit draws, fades (which is sometimes tough for me to do), and amazingly straight balls. It's been amazing. But, this '2' is different than the others - to me it has basically the same profile (and workability) as my previous TSi3, with extra forgiveness AND speed.

My GT3 is going on the BST soon.  I had a Ping rep at the course today doing fittings and I hit the G440 Max.  It is just too easy to hit.  Way less effort for me to hit shot shapes and forgiveness is insane with the Ping.  I love the look and sound of the GT3.  The G440 looks like it sits a little closed to me and the sound isn't as good as the GT3, but the ball flight and ease of hitting shots is just too much for me to continue the GT3 affair.

First off, I have pretty much used Titleist drivers for the last 20 years. Notable favorites are 983, 910 D2 and TSR2.

Without a doubt the GT2 is best Titleist driver I’ve hit. TSR is very good and would be happy to play it but GT2 just does everything a little better.

GT2 feel is almost like forged feel.

Spin is about 200 less than TSR.

Forgiveness is about 20% better.

Looks wise similar to TSR2 but just a bit more refined.

Flight is a little higher with more carry than TSR2.

Distance is about half a club longer “5 to 7” yards on center strikes but if you add in forgiveness on off center strikes the advantage it is more than that.

Both TSR and GT are 44.75 length GD UB6 shaft.

I have the TSR2 and love it.  When demo day comes to my club, I will give the GT2 a try.

This thread convinced me to grab a GT2 10 degree head to test vs. my TSR3 9.  I currently play the TSR3 lofted up to 9.75, and will try the GT2 lofted down to 9.25.  Looking forward to opening the face up a touch and retaining a little more spin (hopefully) without giving up any speed.

I’ve had the GT2 since launch. Originally with a Denali 5.5 but shory after installed  the AF Dream 405 in it.  I played it all of 2024.   This spring i have played the ZXi and tested on course the Elyte and Qi35 and 440 Max.

This week i put the GT2 back in play for 2 rounds and it was like visiting moms house and sitting in your favorite chair. It just felt like home again.   Had my longest (non wind aided) drive of the year and it was a fairway finder all day.

GT2 is very impressive. Been playing it for a month or so now.

My experience(s) ⬇️

Spin window is more consistent than TSR.

Found spin of GT2 lower than TSR2 on highest end shots (was able to switch from TSR3 to GT2 bc of this and picked up forgiveness gains of 2 design).

Better aero = faster club speed + ball speed.

Feel is more crunch like (think Qi and TSR had a kid).

Sound more on muted side due to PMP crown.

If you have TSR is it going to change your life? Probably not.

If you are looking into a new driver is it worth testing? 100% imo.

Take it one further , GT2 ~ qi10 dot , testing head to head , dot might have a little more pop on the screws , but the gt2 is very forgiving, ping point and shoot qualities .

Seems the GT2 is more comparable to the prior TSR3 from a spin perspective. Anyone else seeing that?

Gamed TSR3 for 2 years and just picked up a GT2 and seeing very similar ball flight/numbers, maybe a tad more forgiving on the toe-side miss. Both 9º with Ventus Blue+ 6S at 45".

I hit the snot out of the TSR2, lol I could not wait to get the GT 2 after all of the reviews, and honestly, there is no comparison. My TSR2 is so much longer and so much more forgiving. Now, for the sake of transparency, I did not get fit, but I assumed I could just throw my shaft in the GT and I'd be off. WRONG! I was really shocked, so here's my question: Have any of you who switched from TSR to GT found that the shaft that worked in your TSR did not work in the GT? I'm just trying to figure out how everyone is having these huge gains, and more forgiveness and I feel like I'm just a victim of marketing! lol

Spot on. Every review is “I switched shared and the GT is a game changer”.
anyone just plug the GT into their gamer?
i have a tendency to just upgrade to the latest version and stick with my shaft.

lately ive gone back to my 910D2 8.5

just so consistent.

im sure im giving something up.

Will get a GT2 head to demo and see.

I tried to go TSR2 to Gt2 and saw no difference for my game. Went to Gt1 with same shaft and saw some difference in distance and dispersion improving (HZRDUS Red). Went to the new Denali red and distance and dispersion really improved. Maybe the GT range just works better with the newer shafts? 🤷🏼
