KBS Tour putter shaft thoughts

Recommended Posts

Hey all, swapping out putter shafts and hoping to use knowledge here to decide next step.

I have an AI one milled putter. It came with what I’m guessing is the 90g SL shaft. It was amazing on shorter putts and had great feel but lacked stability. Put a CT tour in it and stability is awesome but have lost some of that touch on shorter putts

Would the “regular” tour putter potentially be a good balance between the two?

I did also try the GPS in a Mizuno putter and didn’t love it, but could try it in the AI one if people think that’s likely better than the Tour shaft based on what I’ve shared.

Before anyone mentions it I’m not looking to try anything other than these two options as I’m tired of tinkering (blasphemy at WRX I know 😂)

If I could do it myself would be easy to try GPS, but local options are limited so am trying to take best guess and minimize sending out a bunch

For whatever reason the regular tour stepped putter shaft feels lighter than the CT.  I haven't pulled it to confirm but that's my observation.

I’d probably be ok with that. How would you compare the two in terms of feel, stability, etc?

PS- wonder if the different feel of weight could be related to balance points if they’re different?

The regular one came in a couple of my TM spiders.  I didn't like it.  Switched to a CT in the spider x and it feels much better.  I don't think the stepped shaft weighs 120 either.  When I put in the CT the club weighed more.

What was it you didn’t like about it?

Could see it weighing less, have no idea myself

Can you compare ct tour to gps? I have a ct tour in my 11 and want to try the gps.

I’m actually gonna put the GPS in my AI one and can then give a better comparison as it’ll be the same head and confirm it’s also not just adjusting when going back and forth

I'll probably put a gps in my 11 to see how it goes. I have a pxg m16 and I tried it in the 11. It gets the ball rolling a lot faster than the ct tour. But I had to extend the pxg shaft and the heft in the handle doesn't feel right. Hoping the gps has the same feel in the handle as the ct tour but promotes better roll like the pxg.

From what I recall CT tour was faster off face than GPS. Would say head feels lighter with GPS too. One note is that GPS is slightly larger handle so grip will be bit larger. Not sure if that’d be an issue for you or not.

should have this week and can report back depending how much of a hurry you’re in

Thanks. I'll be interested in what you find. I haven't bought the shaft yet. Have a tournament this weekend so I'm in no hurry.

I have used the ct tour, m16, and gps.

the gps is in my gamer now, still low torque but more feel than the m16. The m16 is definitely stiffer, but I really really like the GPS. I like the m16 too, and with a heavier head weight Im not sure which one I’d prefer more.

I like the m16. But I've always wanted to try the gps. I went to a center shafted putter and went to 34 from 33. So, heel shafted to center and going longer overall meant an extension in the m16. That extension threw off the feel. So I had a reason to buy a gps.

@getitdaily Played two rounds with GPS this weekend. Thoughts below.

Reason tried GPS was stock shaft (guessing SL 90) was great on short putts but lacked stability on longer ones. CT tour was great on long ones but lacked touch on short ones.

There’s a chance CT woulda been fine with a heavy head but I play a 340-345g blade. I’m also a feel putter vs “mechanical” or whatever you want to call it.

First impressions are GPS will be great blend of the two. The head does feel a bit lighter which helped me on short putts. Didn’t get any of those rockets I’d get with CT sometimes. Distance control and ball staying on the right line were both great. Zero 3 putts yesterday with most 2nd ones being tap ins. Didn’t make my birdie putts but that was all me. When practicing I intentionally hit some WAY on the heel and toe and held up good.

The feel isn’t quite what the SL90 was, but it’s also not something that bothers me when just trying to make putts vs over analyzing.

Season is sadly over but I’ll definitely be having it in the bag to start next year. Could see it staying long-term too.

Let me know if got any questions!

Interesting that you would get rockets with the CT too.  Sometimes I would nuke a putt with that shaft.  It felt kind of stiff of a 355g head and I'd lose the feel.  May try a GPS if it has better distance control.  It looks cool that's for sure.

Thanks for the info. Never put much thought into the "rockets" but had a 2 day tournament this weekend and had several that took.off. I thought it was just the fast greens. But maybe the ct does do that.

Yeah it was driving me crazy lol. I’d agree I think it’s the stiff shaft, especially on a 355g or less head. I was bummed since loved the black CT look (got a black GPS but gloss steel is awesome). For those heads I think the regular stepped one would be better if wanting steel.

Will say in two rounds made some good putts that I dunno I would have consistently done with the CT.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the shaft. Had some legit WTH putts with the CT.

With the GPS the course I played on has some tricky two tiered greens and slopes and I was able to adjust speed much much better.

Feel free to report back how you like it!

Curious  @Albatross Dreamer and any others that play with lighter head putters (esp older SC blades) What would be your KBS or equivalent aftermarket shaft recommendation on an old Newport with a lighter (330-340g) head ? I currently have an aftermarket graphite shaft in my ‘97 CLN prototype 2 SC putter and the whole feel is light. Was hoping a shaft change and 1/2” extension would help. Looking at CT tour and GPS but seeing a lot of people say the head of their putter feels lighter with GPS. Also tinkering with a TT steel shaft with some tip weight.

Good question. I haven't tested them all so can't say for sure. If you don't want it to feel lighter then GPS is probably not for you. The CT tour would prob be too firm. I played the BGT Stability shaft in a NP2 for a bit and I'd say that it feels fairly similar to the GPS except the head feels it's "normal" weight with it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally got the gps shafted up. I like it.

Has that dame firm feel as ct but the firmness extends the entire shaft where the ct sort of ended below the grip. Gps is still super smooth but firm. I saw very similar results as what I was seeing from ct. Distance control was superb. Most importantly...it did was I hoped, helped eliminate a lot of skid that I see from steel shafts. Thr ball got rolling much sooner than with ct.

Glad it seems like a good fit! I’d definitely echo that it’s firm like CT but has better feel. I only got a couple rounds in before winter but don’t think I’ll be changing soon (famous last words I know lol)
