Trail shoulder external rotation in transition

I struggle with a bit of internal rotation in transition, partly brought on by long term poor set up positioning of my trail arm and also where my elbow is on the way back. I injured my right shoulder in the gym years ago and didn't realise my set up and backswing was so out of whack until recently. My right elbow really got too much behind me on the way back and it has engrained some bad moves as a result. It feels less of a strain on my right shoulder doing that but I know how much it is killing my downswing and consistency.

 

I have recently been working on this and been using the tour striker ball and very recently a knock off prosendr to tighten things up on the way back and at the top. I feel like I can now get in a good connected position at the top with right shoulder externally rotated (although it feels weird and really tight, very unnatural).

 

My issue is that I have engrained the right shoulder leading in transition and internally rotating, leading to EE, leaning back etc etc.... and I'm struggling for a 'feel' or move that keeps my right shoulder externally rotated on the way down. It's like my brain needs a cue or feel to engrain this new feeling and i'm struggling to find a good feel, if that makes sense? I feel like my brain is wanting me to start down with my right shoulder, which brings it out and around...

 

I know all the pieces have to work together in sync but I know that this is my main cause of my other effects, and sorting this will sort a lot of issues...

 

Any simple feels or drills to help with this one? What are your transition feels to keep your right shoulder externally rotated?

Lol man you are speaking to me, I have been struggling with the exact same issue and have been working on it as well. Mostly trying to keep my shoulder more internally rotated on the way up (or at least feel that and to try and see my trail elbow under my hand near the top rather then flaring out behind me. 

 

I havent tried the above drills so will try those as well. For me I have liked the feel of my trail elbow trying to stay pointed at the ball on the backswing to keep my elbow tucked in and then feel trail elbow pointed at the ball on my downswing to try and keep the elbow in and trail shoulder internally rotated. To me this has helped as more of a feel then trying to actually rotate my shoulder. Also trying to have the backswing in a better spot I think is very helpful so you dont have as much to try and correct in transition. 

 

I have found some Adam Porzak videos on takeaway, "shaking hands", "holding the tray" to be helpful for getting the elbow in a better spot on the backswing so google those and you may find helpful and then the better the elbow in the backswing the easier to transition. 

 

I have also found (like you mentioned as well) I am used to early extending with prior bad habits to trying to be mindful of this as well. I have found when I am conscious of trying not to early extend then my elbow reverts back a bit or if I am watching my elbow I will early extend a little. So with the two faults have to work on them separately and definitely the more your trail elbow improves you will naturally not find yourself EE so much. I liked the Monty drill of zipper away from ball to help keep hips in a better spot which allows more room for the trail elbow to come down in front of the body.
