Why is that? Serious question, I don’t know. If I’m paying money for golfers to see my ad, why would I want to pay more so that half as many viewers will see it?

Not trying to be argumentative, and I’m not saying anyone is wrong, I’m legitimately curious to understand why.

No, it’s a common misconception.  Most people think that millions of views are worth a ton of money and that the creators are making millions.  YouTube typically pays between $3,000 and $8,000 per million views (for some content up to $15k).  The reason they don’t pay more is because they are only paying for ad impressions and a view doesn’t equal an ad impression, because only a small percentage of the people that click on the video actually watch long enough to actually watch the ad breaks.

Conversely, 2.8 million average viewers for a broadcast program means that 2.8 million people were tuned in for the entire three hours.  During that time there are dozens of commercials.  Further, because the demographics are way better (I.e., older and wealthier), the ads running are more high value and the broadcaster gets way more revenue for them.  Way more.

Setting aside the better demographics of the TV audience, your math isn’t correct.  Simple math would be 2.8 million x 3 hours = 8.4 million viewing hours for the PGA Tour.  By contrast, Bryson’s video, which was just under one hour long would be only 6.x million viewing hours, even if every viewer watched every single minute and every ad, which they don’t.  A very small percentage of views actually become ad impressions.  If you consider the dozens of ads on an hour of TV vs an hour of YT, it gets even worse.  That three hours of broadcast TV probably resulted in 50 to 100 million high dollar ad impressions.  Bryson’s video probably got less than one million of much lower value ad impressions.

Makes me wonder how YT Premium plays into that. I pay $14 a month for the pleasure of never seeing ads in any of the YT videos I watch. I’d have to assume the creators get some of that but the advertisers surely wouldn’t (I assume). And I literally could not tell you the name of a single advertiser during the WM Phoenix Open because that’s time to grab a snack, move the laundry, send texts, etc. I think I could maybe name 2 from SB. Guess it’s a good thing I’m not in charge of buying ads because I never did see how the real world ROI would ever work that.

When I said 50-100 million ad impressions, I was assuming that only about 25% of people actually watch the ad.

Good news.  West Coast Swing is the best part of the golf season besides the majors.

I get this is good news but let's not make it into more than it is.

The golf tournament went up against nothing in the US market as the Daytona 500 was rained delayed until the tourney was almost over.

With that and most of the country under water or snow golf fans had no other options that couldn't get outside to play.

If I recall correctly a third of the PGAT 2024 season was a washout. The first fifteen tournaments or so were either rained out, delayed for darkness, or a late start up for fog. The PGAT was snake bitten in 2024, so the rating was not as bad as many would have us believe. The PGAT is just fine. IMO

I agreed it was good, I'm just saying there was no other TV option to measure it against and if wasn't for Aberg taking control then there was nothing to it.

LOL, third week in a row of terrific ratings news and you're trying to minimize it?

What the numbers are yet again, are numbers showing a huge relative increase -  surprise, the Genesis is always played in the winter.

Let's look at the Venn Diagram of "Daytona 500 viewers" and "Genesis Invitational viewers"...

But I actually did watch both! Of course I'm a weirdo who keeps up with way too many sports.

Same.  In addition to golf, I follow pro, college and junior hockey, pro and college men’s and women’s basketball, pro and college football, pro baseball, motor racing (both F1 and Indy Car), and MotoGP.

Of course. The correct diagram would be a very slight overlap. But the response is not as funny that way.

Regarding NASCAR/D500. I watched a replay of the last 10 laps. Felt like plenty!

At least if I go to a rock concert I’m not questioning why I’m jeopardizing my hearing - never been to anything louder than the “races” as they called them back in the day and that was my only takeaway.

Oh yeah. Check out an NHRA event. It’s loud and will vibrate your organs! Good time

Agree there. I’ve never bought something because of a tv commercial that I know of.  I rarely watch them. I’m the guy that records and starts watching the game an hour late so I can fast forward through commercials.

I believe they get a flat fee if a YouTube premium subscriber watches. One of the channels I watch did an overview of how a video gets paid. If an ad comes on they get a different fee and if someone uses ad block they don't get paid. That's why a lot of channels get separate sponsorships because the money is pretty fluid.

What are the actual numbers?  I'd be surprised if 5MM Americans are watching non majors.  Sickos like me sure but normal people?

They weren’t getting 5 million, just 17% more than 2024 whether they are sickos or not

Looks like Cognizant up from last year - Monday finish last year, though, so not much of a comp.  Waiting for a decent article with more info, the only one I've seen wants to go back 2 years and not as many as then.

Still, 5 week in a row!  Fact.

This year’s tournament was lower rated than 2023 and 2022, but higher than 2024

Haven’t read all pages but just jumping in here to share two thoughts and wants for all golf broadcasts and what would encourage me to stay glued to the screen more frequently:

1.) Show more golf shots and less of everything else. Less faces of the commentators and their opinions, less interviews, less commercials (understanding there’s a need for sponsors, advertising, funding, etc. to make these board asts and tournaments happen) but show a minimal amount. More golf shots from the actual players participating in the tournament is all I care about and want to see when it comes to WATCHING GOLF.

2.) More shot tracers on most every shot/stroke that isn’t a putt. Seeing the shot shapes, curvature, and windows the best in the world execute is so entertaining and way more enjoyable to watch versus the traditional and archaic coverage that feature minimal to no tracers.

In my opinion, you do these two simple things and it would help ratings and viewership increase.
