The top guys on the tour last year were

Scottie

Xander

Rory

Collin
Will Clarke

If they had a pga tournament and replaced them with

Bryson

Rahm

Cam

Brooks

DJ

More people would watch than with that first group

 🤣 🍻

That's insane my friend. The current tours consist of those guys. The PGAT gets 2.5M viewers on a particular Sunday, 2M Saturday viewers........the 54League attracts 89K. LOL!

~The top guys are relevant...... the bottom guys are not.

Ya and if you grabbed Mahomes Saquon and Nick Bosa and threw them in an exhibition league with a bunch of no names they wouldn’t get the 20MM viewers they normally get ; )

But it’s clear from how the tour is selling off equity and getting investors,

They know the talent drain gravely impacts growth potential

Remember, you and your friends may be part of the group of folks that always watches the PGA Tour on Sunday because “ that’s just what they do”

But that’s not growth.

Its called a “profit margin” for a reason

Profits are made at the “margin” and, since expenses are always going up, the tour can’t make money and grow from just the old faithful diehards who tune in when when top players consistently leave.

It has nothing to do with the talent drain. Nobody can compete with the Saudi money. There’s been no talent drain. Other than Rahm, cam when he’s hot and Bryson there’s nobody that left the pga tour that draws fans. As evident by their less than 100k viewers, no sponsors and no tv deal. If it wasn’t a talent drain then the eyes would have followed the players you list.

as you say it’s pretty obvious the oga your is just fine.

The PGA Tour (at least historically), is not a "business" in the normal sense. There is no "profit". If they suddenly cut 5 events or scaled back purses 15%...literally nobody would notice except players. They don't need "growth" to generate a profit (a return for investors) (historically) because there were no investors to receive a profit or complain if there was not a profit.

BUT, none of that is even happening or will happen. Golf is booming. And time marches on. Look at the NFL. Dan Snyder did fkk all for 20y and sold for a massive profit. He did possibly the worst job possible and still made a killing.  Things like major sports broadcast contracts are not going down in value. The next deal the PGA Tour makes will dwarf the last one.

100%. The PGAT is successful because it has its own sponsors, not because of certain players (TW excluded). That's the principle that it was built on. If not for being supported by a sovereign nation the other tour would have folded long ago.

Trust me after 6months of a steady diet of Bryson Dechambeau's act and his professor nonsense, heads will explode. The guy comes with an expiration date. WRXers have short memory's. 🤣

Have to agree w/this 💯

I do my very best to not be a hater or let others “burn my chicken”. But the Monday following his ‘24 US Open win and seeing his act everywhere from the local news to Jimmy Fallon, I was done. I had enough to last at least a year. As they say, small doses.
That said, God bless him. One helluva golfer 😊

I will give him credit though; he turned his act into a $125M contract with the gullible Saudis....😂 Unlike most he ruined the '24 US Open for me. I was too nauseated to watch much..... 😫🤣

Now they call him the people's Champ, I think not! LOL!

Bryson is incredibly boring.  I'd rather watch Caitlin Clark.

News flash but golf was always full of boring players and was boring to watch for most. The mid 80's-Tiger Era had nothing but boring players who never tried to dominate and the result was, well, boring.

Golf is, was and will most likely always be boring.  It's a niche game.  That's what makes the money play by the Saudis all the more interesting.  Golfers are way overpaid compared to how much interest people have in the game.  Will it correct?  Not until the Saudis get bored of losing money.

If the Saudis idea was sport washing to improve their reputation in European/North American eyes they would have been better off spending $500mil in women's pro golf.

Are they overpaid on the pga tour? They a can only make what the sponsors are willing to pay out and sponsors won’t pay out of there aren’t eyeballs on

the product and the tv execs and event sponsors feel there’s enough eyeballs to warrant the money they are giving out so I would say they are earning based on the market.

When there are millions of dollars given out the participants are going to make millions and thus fair pay.

Baseball, football, basketball have large sums of money coming in. The players are making a bunch of money and the minimum salaries keep going up and the ceiling keeps getting higher and higher because the money is there. are the salaries exorbitant? Sure if one looks at the number only, but the money wouldn’t be there if the player and/or team wasn’t drawing the audience that allows that revenue to come in. Athletes aren’t over paid they are paid based on value they provide

Bold move SK. How do you know if your opinion is right or wrong now?

People who put posters on ignore only want to talk to people with similar ideas....🤣

They think that they're always right, which is ridiculous in itself.... 🤣🤣

Intelligent people think that they're right until they are convinced otherwise.

That's completely untrue Titleist.  If you read my post above I don't care to argue or be right on a golf forum.  I simply enjoy the back and forth without personal insults.

You just want to post your opinion and not have it challenged. Then you change your stance on what you mean when it is challenged.

you don’t want discuss you want to be able to say what you want and let it be your truth

Truth about 99% of the time. There’s a drive by troll or two I have on the ignore list and one or two others just so I can control what I want to respond too

Golf has a couple of unique factors that distort the market. From a pure eyeballs perspective, you're completely right. Golfers are overpaid in relation to eyeballs. Golf has two big advantages though... One, the eyeballs they do get tend to have much higher discretionary income. Most consumer brands are targeting that 18-35 demo. Financial services, pharma, luxury brands would much rather target the 50 y/o w/ high income and a golf addiction. Two, golf is a sport you can play for life. Most sports fans stop participating in said sport in high school, if not sooner. Sure you may play beer league softball and pick up basketball, but not into your 50's and your certainly not spending the same amount of money in those sports that a golf enthusiast spends in his. Sickos are buying new clubs every year, balls and gloves every few months. Their closets are mostly multipurpose golf/work gear. They pay green fees every week or a membership to a club. They plan mega golf trips at high end resorts. Etc.

The professional viewing audience may be small, but the whole golf ecosystem is huge and well heeled.
