Less Wedges more?

My initial post I was just thinking about shots in perfect conditions if everything was executed properly off the tee. We all know that golf is a game of imperfect and I often find myself needing to create shots so I have a variety of those with each wedge. I also should add that I haven’t mentioned wind or rain or cool temperatures…all these situations could require something that isn’t stock. Each player has to figure out how they “see” shots then learn to execute them on course. If 1/2 and 3/4 swings is what you visualize best then use that to your advantage. I like being able to do so using 4 clubs instead of 3 as I feel it gives me more options and that is, for me, entirely course defendant. When I grew up the first course we played a lot I could have gone from a 9 iron straight to a 60 and never have needed a P G or S wedge.

Makes sense. Yeah, you have to play what works best for your game for sure!

My wedge game / thinking has changed quite a bit from a few years ago. I carry a 58 LW ( bent to 57 ) , a 50 GW , then PW.  PW full swing is 120.  If there is nothing in front of the green ( hazard ) I’ll bump and run all the time with the PW. I’ve developed very good feel for most any distance.  A full GW is 105 for me, but I prefer to bump and run up a PW from 105.  Only if I have to carry a bunker or some rough will I reach for the LW or GW.

How many here still play a 47° set PW? Most 'players' clubs I see these days are about 46° or less and distance irons/GI seem to be anywhere from 41°-45°. So the 52/58 setup which as so popular with a 47° PW doesn't fit as well with a 43-45 set PW. I added a 48° wedge then go 52/58 but would probably be just as happy with 52/56.

In my MP64 set, weakened loft off 9 iron 1* to 43* and that of PW 2* to 48*, blends well with my  54* and 60* wedge lofts. Have played similar lofts for years and seen no need to change 🤷‍♂️

Agree there is no need to change. But the MP 64s are over 10 years old so I guess my question was directed at players playing more recent models because as I said, the modern 'set' PW seems to range anywhere from 38° to 46° with the majority in that 43°-45° range. Your lofts are perfect and the only change with a modern setup would be the number stamped on the clubhead.

Actually, this set is new old stock that have only had about a week, played similar specs in Srixon ZX7 MKII set. Initially played with stock 46* in pw, then 50*,54*,and 58* wedges. Just really didn’t need additional option for full swings as usually can flight wedges pretty well. Know lots of good players that enjoy the more wedges, just didn’t suit my needs/tastes as can score well with 12 clubs and lighten load for walking.

47, 53, 58 is exactly where I am set up wise.  I am far more consistent and happy with the way its sort of helped narrow down my short game options. I don't over think shots nearly as much as I used to.  And it opened up a slot up at the top of my bag.

Perhaps I should restate my original question. For those playing 47° PW what is the make and model of the irons you are playing? I ask because you just don't see a 47° PW in many modern iron sets offered these days.

1980.  I set them slightly weak for gapping purposes; even 4° gaps across 2-pw.

This year with my JPX 923 HMP’s I decided to go with Vokeys at 46, 50, 54, and 60. The full-swing gapping is actually decent, but it really feels like overkill.

A couple of my Vokeys are due for replacement, I am considering just replacing them all with a set of Ping S159’s in 48/54/60. Less to think about and I would get another option off the tee. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not!

Until I put my set of Maltby TS4 in the bag, I was largely playing Vibration Matched Golden Rams (50° PW FWIW).  Amusingly, the loft progression is largely identical, just one club number off.  3-GW vs 2-PW.  Really the same.

I have a gap wedge from my Wilson set of irons. It's a 49 degrees, and I only do full shots with it.

And my only other wedge is a 56* (Cleveland CBX Zipcore full face 2) and I do EVERYTHING with it : Full shots from 100 yards, bunker shots, small chips etc. You just have to open the face to make it a 60*

It's a no brainer.

I carry 12 clubs only (Driver - 5 w - hybrid - 5i/gw - 56* - putter)

I remember Tiger Woods saying he grew up doing everything with his 56*.

It's the only real wedge you need imo as a pw and a gap wedge are just 10 and 11 irons for fulls shots only.

I have been debating this also going 50/56 and that same full face 2 56 wedge. Funny I have the same rest of bag setup.  I just was worried about having a low bounce option as my current 57deg13 bounce cant do it all.

Im heading toward 54/58 but will test that 56 wedge and be back to 50/56

The fact the 56* is my only wedge makes me really confident with it, as it's obviously my most use club. An extremely reliable workhorse.

The Full Face grooves also ads a bit of confidence when you have to open the face.

Under 80 yards I could do exactly the same with a Vokey tho (or any "blade" type of wedge), as I like to toy with my dad's vokeys. The chunkier CBX profil helps me mostly for full shots around 100 yards, because my PW and GW are from my iron set and I would lose confidence (and probably distance) full shoting a blade wedge when all my other irons are beefier (Wilson D9 Forged)
