Mil Spec Restoration. All out or keep it simple?

Recommended Posts

I’ve got a 350G mil spec that I got for a somewhat good deal. It’s definitely not in the best shape, usual dings, couple on the face, extended shaft, non Scotty grip. I want to send it out for a refinish, but am debating about going all out or just getting it cleaned up.

If I go all out, I’d do the whole nine. Remill the face, make the bottom blank, different finish, etc. Otherwise, I’d just get all the dents out bar remilling, get a nice finish and paint fill, call it a day. I don’t plan on ever selling the putter, but just have reservations about doing such an intense restoration. Would love to get others thoughts and opinions.

Also, I’m a little worried about messing up the feel of the putter. Being a pro plat finish, does stripping it and doing other finishes (Thinking cerakote or PVD) mess with the feel at all?

It’s not possible to get dings out without a full restoration.  Dings in the face require the face to be re-milled.  If you just want it “cleaned up”, reshafted and new grip, you could do that yourself or by someone local.  If you want a full restoration, I recommend NorCal Putters.  There’s really no in between.  NorCal restored mine back to original and it looks brand new.  Not sure why you want the sole blank.  Keeping it as original as possible will help maintain its value.  If you don’t care about that, have at it.

In my opinion...Cerakote ruins the feel of a good feeling milled putter.  Pvd should feel about the same as it will require a stripping of the original plating and new plating would be applied before the pvd finish.  I would also consider BOS to make it back to original finish.

You will lose some weight but you can install a brass tipweight inside shaft to replace weight loss.

Or Scotty Custom shop ....

FYI.  Scotty Custom shop stopped offering Pro Platinum finish a long time ago.

NorCal offers different types of face milling.  I chose smooth milling due to the type of ball I typically use.

Gotta putt with sun glasses with these high glare finishes...   wow

Never had that issue with Pro Platinum but I’ve been blinded by the Black Oxide Cameron’s I’ve owned.

Would ask them. Pro Platinum finish is just nickel plating over your carbon with glass blast finish. I’m sure they can do even if not advertised just probably not call Pro Platinum due to rights.

I meant getting the dings around the edges out. I don't see myself selling the putter, so that's why I am trying to decide between keeping it simple and going all out.

NorCal is who I was planning on going with if I go all out, otherwise I live about 20 min from BOS so they would probably be who I went with for a simpler job.

Attached pics for reference.

Removing the dings around the edges (or anywhere else) can’t be done without compromising the plating.  When the finish is compromised it exposes that area to the raw carbon steel and it will rust eventually getting underneath the areas that are plated like a cancer.  You need to either live with the way it is or get a full restoration.

Send BOS these photos and I’m sure they will tell you the same thing.  Better yet, take it to them.

Be careful with Nor Cal if you go with a deeper or tuna milling. They don't have their feed rate timing perfected which leads to the milling noit being symmetric.

It’s done on a CNC.  Has nothing to do with feed rate timing.  He’s using a small and massively underpowered mill (around .1 hp at rpm he’s using) and the deep cuts are more than the motors on the mill can handle.  Feed rate is a constant and would always be symmetrical if machine has the power to make the cut
