True Temper Strikes Again (AMT weights)

Got a fantastic deal on a set of new 2-8 AMT White S400 shafts (<$100). I plan on soft stepping them 2x for a new set of irons.

As per my usual experience with AMT shafts, the weights are all over the place. Fortunately, I'm not too sensitive to weight, and I like my clubs heavy. Before Assembly, I'll dry fit and swingweight to get them as close as possible. Might have to split the difference between total weight and swingweight. If it wasn't for the one shaft that's 4g too light, they wouldn't be terrible. Just add some weight to match up with the new PW.

I’m not entirely sure what @Howard_Jones means, but as someone who has been eyeing AMT’s, I agree that the weights don’t look good.

 

The real problem seems to be the 4/6i which is 4g above spec. To bring them all to a 3g progression you’d be looking at a lot of lead tape on the shafts and total weights above spec to match the 4/6i. Then there’s the question of where on each shaft to put the tape—14”, balance point, or something else—and associated effects on SW, total weight, balance, and general performance. For the price and the advertised benefits, I expect more from True Temper—something on the level of Tour Issue tolerances, perhaps.
 

Then again, if AMT/AWG technology was really superior, perhaps the demand would be higher and more options would be on the market. If I’m being honest with myself, perhaps AMT/AWG technology makes sense in concept but in practice is just another fringe approach.
 

Sigh. I hope someone here tells me why I’m wrong. Until then, it’s back to the practice range with the irons I have…
