Worst Irons All Time?

Was poking thru a pawn shop sports section and came across set of Titleist 731PM irons. The PM stands for Phil Mickelson, and I highly doubt he played this version. They were some of the harshest, worst feeling clubs I ever tried when they first came out. You just DO NOT offer a set of cast blades, and Titleist should have known  better. What a dark chapter for them trying to just stamp "PM" on junk and save a few dollars in the manufacturing process.

I love playing my 990s because of its good feel, durable and doesn't rust.  And this is coming from a guy that also has a set of 1999 Hogan Apex blades.   I know that it is not a true blade but it is the closest thing to one that is cast.  Lots of other good tour players used them too.  Zac Johnson used them for a quite a few years even after it was discontinued.  Please explain that.

The 962, 962B, 990, 990B, 762, and 762B iron lines were all solid/great feeling cast blade-like heads back in the day. Titleist knew exactly what they were doing as many of the top PGA/Nike Tour players used them back in the day. I was in high school/college between 96’ - 04’ and a lot of players in my area used them as well. I played the 990B heads from 2002-2004 and I still have them. They felt great to me at the time and they were built like Sherman tanks. 22 years later and they still look decent…

Might be controversial, but the Titleist 716 AP2’s were terrible, especially when compared to what came before and after.

I agree with the Cleveland and Spaulding choices, I’m throwing a hot take in there and saying the ping i525 in there as well. Couldn’t hit s*** with them hated the feel and sound, distances were all over the place too.

Those Executives were ugly, but they played nicely.  A very low CG, launched the ball easily.  

 

And, as we have discussed before, Pavin won the US Open with VAS irons.

How about this hunk of junk? the Tommy Armour 845 VCG. Had a finish on it worse than current Pings, a sliding weight for draw/fade bias (but I don't think it came with a wrench!) and about 6.5 feet of offset. 

 

This is probably also up there. The Callaway BB'08 with the "iBrid" long irons with a huge open back flange. Couldn't give these things away when they were current.

Yeah at least you knew what you were getting with them, and they did as advertised. The PM Titleist's however were passed off as blades and they were harsh hard to hit cast junk

6 or 7 years ago, I picked up some Titleist demo shafts and heads:  716 MBs, 716 CBs and 716 AP2s.  I loved hitting the MBs and CBs but could never hit the AP2s worth a darn.  I have no idea why.
