Just got my ZXi5's today.  First thing I noticed was that the soles "looked" smaller (as in width)....thought that can't be as many are concerned that they increased the sole with.   This was as I was just taking them out of the box, so I grabbed a 7 iron of the previous gen, which I've played all year for comparison.    I then decided to take a measurement and as far as increase in sole dimension... well, there isn't much in it.  The difference you see is .007" and is most likely operator based than actual difference.    I made a few measurements by myself and many were the same, but thought I'd grab some pictures so recruited mrs Txbadger for the assist.

The picture side by side isn't a great angle but I think the beveling on the ZXi's gave me the impression of a smaller sole as it is wider sole to back and is more noticeable to my eye around the toe.

ZXi5 is quite a bit shorter heel to toe and has a tungsten plug. Wow.

They do look shorter.

I hope the fitting carts have both steelfiber and axiom so I can hit both.

I think it looks shorter than it really is... I tried doing some measurements using the same caliper, but at the measurement I was trying to get wasn't idea because of the radius of the hosel.  Not the most ideal tool for this purpose.  I did try another measurement, but it doesn't take into account the hosel area.   Here, there is only 1 hard edge to measure (longest part of toe), so this isn't ideal either but I tried to get from that point to the edge of the hitting area (lol.. not sure that is the correct term, but you should be able to see what I mean by pictures).  This is the 7 iron again.

Nice. What about putting the toe against a square ruler and measuring the distance from the toe to the center of the shaft bore line? That might measure the felt size.

Any comparison of ZXi7 vs ZX7 MKii?

Sorry, that's txbadger's sweet new set of ZXi5. That's the first set I've heard of in the US. I haven't seen any in person but I think we may get something this weekend for ZXi7.

If the Zxi5's are almost the same, then you'd think the 7's will follow the same direction, seems logical not to mess too much with one of the best irons out there!

Does the top line look much different in person?

definitely a better measurement getting two hard edges... the square measurement is fairly course but should give you a good idea...

not much difference on topline... but the face looks better imo... the grey area is less noticeable at address.   I tried swapping each out (one in front, then the other) and the ZXi's are less noticeable/more clean.   That may be a newness thing, not sure but it was striking to me.

I almost went with Axiom in my Zxi order but heard they are low launching/low spin even more so than DG.  I am coming from SteelFiber i80.

i ended up going Tour Lite.

Kbs tour lites are actually very good.
I’ve been playing SF and TGI, but picked up a set with Tour lites and planned to restarts, but they were a pleasant surprise.

Thanks a lot. That looks awesome. ZXi5 looks just a bit shorter from these photos. Very refined and beautiful details. I'm sure it feels like butter.

it does feel a bit better, but not sure how much of that is "real" and how much of that is the new toy effect.   I've been hitting the 7 irons of each for a little while now and the ZXi certainly has a different feel.  I wasn't expecting to feel much difference given these are 5's (I'm sure the 7's are certainly noticeable).

the shaft/grips are different to be fair (details in a bit).

The first few swings with the new clubs were just your standard.. ok.. lets get to know these.   Then after 25 swings with 'em... I started to compare the 7 irons.    The first thing to note is that I am using a cheap, cheap ball here in my simulator (Callaway warbird).   I do use some premium balls as well, but for working on a part of the swing or whatnot I'll just hit these into a blank screen just to focus on the feeling and not worrying about result.  Anyway.. the first thing that stuck out aside from general feel was the sound.   With the MkII's its a very clicky sound, but not really shocking for using the warbird.  Not nearly the same sound with the ZXi.   The feel is different too, but here is where the setup could be playing in.

ZX5 mkII:   1/4" short, MMT TX105 soft stepped, Golf Pride MCC standard

ZXi5: 1/4" short, Modus 105 stiff, Golf Pride tour velvet standard

so aside from the graphite vs steel feel difference, the ZXi5's are 10 grams lighter.

LOL, like literally a hair, like 1/8 of a mm.  The 7's will be the same size as the previous version as well for all intensive purposes.  What it all comes down to is that they played with/changed the construction of all three of the irons.  Maybe moved a little bit of weight around in the cavity, not much.  Stock specs are going to be the same as they have been for all the models as well.  Feel is the main purpose of the release and I do believe we will get it.  Srixon's forgings are already some of the best on the planet, some say they are.  I salute them for not making any major changes to arguably the best iron line up available.  Other OEM's shoot themselves in the foot time and time again, (we know who they are).  Hard not to believe that this will be Srixon's most successful release to date, they just keep doing it every cycle.

I think ZX MKII was the best irons line of the past two years. Legendary status. We'll see if ZXi can continue the success.

Not sure that's true in practice. I was chatting just yesterday* to a very good clubfitter who has built multiple ZX MkII sets with both SteelFibers and Axioms and he said he felt the overall performance was very closely comparable in the equivalent weights.

(* And the reason I was chatting to him is because he is going to make me a blended set of ZXi5/ZXi7 with Axiom 75 to replace my set of ZX5 MkII with Steelfiber i80cw. I got great results going from KBS Tour to the SteelFibers, but don't love love the feel, as @Mob said.)

Don’t you go make me start 2nd guessing.   Ha

Oh they definitely are and i’m w KBS fan.  These and the TGI 75 were very similar in LM results. But the Tour Lites had a better dispersion.   So they won out.   I had also hit them in a demo set of KING TEC X irons and liked them alot.

One small request for anyone who already owns the ZXi5’s in the short irons. Would you please be so kind to post a couple of quality address pictures of the PW and 8 iron (like below)?

Below is an address pictures of the 7 iron from a random YouTube review. Just in case anyone else was also interested in seeing the shape from above.

I love TGI and Steelfiber. Can't play steel anymore. Glad Axiom is now available in .355. If Fujikura makes Axiom 85 in 2025, I would check it out and have a bag full of Velocore. Haha.

Here are the 8 iron and PW (in that order)...  I was holding the club in my non dominant hand and using the dominant hand to take the picture so alignment might not be 100% spot on.. also and had it setup like I normally would at address with a bit of shaft lean.... setup might not be what you are looking for so if you need something with no shaft lean (straight on like the random 7 iron you gave as an example), let me know and I'll re-take.

8 iron first, followed by PW

PitchingWedge.jpg

Wow, super clean and frames the ball perfectly. Please do the 7 iron zero shaft lean for those of us who do not set up with shaft lean when you have time. No judgement on y'all leaners, haha.
