I went to a fitting day to day and tried all the new Srixon stuff.  i got fitted for new irons. I ended up C-Taper 130x shafts for the irons. Set combo 4/5 irons in the ZXI5 and 6-GW in ZXI7.

Thanks for the feedback @JB lefty, and lucky you for getting an early go.  I'm also curious what differences you saw between the zxi7 and zxi5 7 irons.  And curious how you decided where to transition to the zxi5 (distance, peak height, descent angle)?

If you dont mind sharing, what is your swingspeed and what was the deciding factor in splitting the set between 5i and 6i?

Hit the ZXi7 7i yesterday.  I don't think the irons look very different from last version really.  With the new stock shaft being the DG mid 115, I think it takes away from some of the feel of the head.  That shaft performs well for me, my numbers were great but I feel the Modus shafts would do these heads better justice.  I saw no difference in spin from what my current MKii/CTL 110 setup does.  If it ain't broke.....

Interestingly, their entire cache of iron heads are all 6 irons; which they believe is a better way to fit players.  It seems most all other demo tents and fitting shops have 7 irons.  Anyone else run into fitters using 6 iron test heads?

Yes, the fitter I usually go to (local shop) uses all 6 irons as well. I’ve never inquired to the reasoning though.

Club Champion does this as well (or at least the one I went to did). They said the reason is because your misses will be more prevalent with a 6 than they would with a 7.

If I only get 1 club, then I do prefer the 6. I don’t agree with CC on many things but on the 6i, I do. If I am hitting the 6 good, then I feel good about the 7 & 8 and I’m only one step away from the 5. However, I really wish fittings would use at least two clubs. I’m not sure which ones I would prefer but maybe a 5 & 8 or 5 & 7. I don’t think that will ever happen though.

The way things are trending where they want people in combo sets, I absolutely agree and am hoping for the same. 5/7 or 6/8 would be ideal. V unlikely we ever see it though, at least from the multi-brand fitters

Agree 100%. 2 clubs would be way more ideal and would definitely appreciate the opportunity to hit the 5 and another club. We can wish right

That is the same argument TrueSpec had when I asked about it.  I also think being able to test a 6i and 8i or 9i would be better, for sure when considering combo sets, but it would drive up costs and inventory.

I love the 6 for my ZX7 MKII but the 5 goes absolutely nowhere. My 6 goes 160 to 170 yd with a towering ball flight and about a foot of rollout, SteelFiber i80s.

That’s why would really like the 5 as part of the fitting. To me the 5 is where it just feels like a completely different club, even of the same set.

I’m playing OG ZX5 and I’m not a long hitter, around 170 w/ ZX5 6i in warm temps, but the 4 and 5 ZX5 launch really nice for me.

Only issue I have with my ZX5 MkII is lowish spin. Middled stock 7 carries 175 at about 4000 rpm on Trackman with an RCT Pro V1. 42-ish descent angle. Hoping the ZXi7 with weaker lofts will get me more in the 165, 6000, 45 window.

I am low spin too on the OG 5s. Same reason I want to try a split with the i5s/i7s

I think a few PGA pros play the ZX5 5i. Can't go wrong there. 4 iron is driving iron territory. You could go the Scotty Scheffler way, man. He does ok. Hah.

I'll be honest, it might be sim-orexia. I don't really find myself hitting through greens on course, and my home club keeps them very firm and fast. But any excuse to buy new sticks right?

I thought I saw a MSRP on those just south of $700.  It's going to take a healthy two handfuls of meters (or yards :classic_wink:) gain to make me pull the credit card and ditch my G410P.

Your combo is the same one I'm considering.  I presume your fitting was with the 7i test heads?  On paper, I think the ZX5i's would be a bit longer through the bag.  Do you recall what difference, if any, you saw between the 7 irons?

The ZXI 5 head is not a fully forged head and is a decent size bigger, no huge but bigger. The feel was clicky compared to the ZXI7 but no bad on a well struck one. If you hitting the middle then the feel is pretty good on the ZX5. There is a degree loft difference between the sets so easy enough to combo. For me the ZXI7 gave the better launch and spin window where the 5 tended to launch higher with more spin. The ZXI5 were longer and the reason why i did the combo was that I thought in the 4 and 5 irons nothing wrong with a little extra forgiveness and launch.

Frankly, as a Mizuno player, I never thought the JPX 921 felt good relative to other Mizuno offerings from the MP line.  I would hope the ZXi7 feel better than the 921, because the ZX7mkII feel light years better than the 921.  923 were a touch improved in the feel dept.

I have way higher hopes for the new 7's.

They feeling of the ZXI7 irons is fantastic. My Mizuno were the 921 MP SEL irons. They were nice but not the best feeling feeling iron I have hit. To be honest most OEM that are fully forged heads feel good. Some ppl I think hang there hat on that Mizuno is the best, and that I am not so sure of.

The main reason for splitting the set at the 5 iron was the is only one degree difference in lofts between the zxi7 and zxi5 sets in the 5 iron and the 4 iron is the same loft. A real easy transition there and the little extra forgiveness in the longer irons is always welcome. I couldn't test the 4 iron in the zxi7 but after hitting the zxi5 seven iron i knew the distance gaps wouldn't be hard to manage and it will be easy enough to bend the zxi5 irons one or two degree weak if need be.

My SS with the 7 iron averaged at 93mph and I was carrying on average 160 meters/ 176 yards with 6500/6750 spin with launch angle 16-18 degree. That was with the C-taper 130x. The shaft just seemed to work and although 10 grams heavier then the KBS Tour V 120X in my PXG that C taper just flighted the ball better and took the spin off a bit. I am nervous the heavier shaft might be to much for me, but that could just be because its the heaviest iron shaft i have played. I have alway been typically a really high launch and high spin player and anything that helps drop that a bit is great. For me the iron feel and forgiveness level were great and I got the flight window I was after. I am not saying these are the best irons but it would be hard to find something that would out perform them.
