Anyone have any thoughts between the zx5 Mkii and the zxi5? Any noticeable difference?

finding quite a few mkiis in my specs still in plastic available for sub $1000

hit the zxi5 in fitting feel like it’s a little softer and quite a bit cleaner looking. Can actually get great deal from DD’s right now on them

So i've been playing a full set of ZXi7 essentially since release, and absolutely love them. Recently picked up a ZXiU 4i to see if that could fill my 3H -> 4i gap a little better on the mishits, and MAN does this thing go... could just be the stock MMT 90X, but I'm just not sure if i'm a fan after a solid range session or two. I play in the wind quite a bit in TN, I think it may just float too much for me.

I am typically a pretty decent long iron player. Don't really have trouble launching them, and typically can work them both ways. Also not really trying to hit trajectories with my 4i/5i, unless i've put myself in a pretty bad spot. I posted a page or two back how I was contemplating a shaft change, which is still where i'm at in my testing phase. I've come to the conclusion that re-ordering a brand new build, especially if I decide on the $-Taper, would essentially be the same cost as finding my shafts, ferrules, grips, build cost, etc. which has put me in a pickle.

Do I just go for the same ZXi7 full set that i've enjoyed, but end up with the same 3H->4i gapping issues? Or do I spring for a ZXi5 4i,5i and then ZXi7 6-P? Really this would be just to have something a little "hotter" in those slots, but not overly hot and high launching like a Utility.

For people who went with that combo, how have you been enjoying them long term? How did you end up tweaking the lofts, if any? Just trying to get a feel for what i'd be expecting in my own bag. Thanks! 👍

I can tell you this much....I have the ZXiU 4i with Modus GOST X (shaft is really good in this club, Scottie is on to something haha) and it slots perfectly. Could be worth a shot finding something similar. I also did not get along with the MMT fwiw

I've definitely thought about it. Just hard to try different options without really putting some $ in to test haha. Had maybe thought a KBS Prototype 105s or even a $-Taper Lite in stiff if I go with the $-Taper 120 in the irons... The GOST has a pretty similar bend profile as the Modus 105 if I remember correctly. Could be close to the KBS Tour/$-Taper as well. Lots of questions... Lol

I got the combo:

zxi7: GW-7

zxi5: 5,6

zxi4: 4

I think I had the 7 iron bent 1 degree weak to keep the lofts consistent through the set.

Been really pleased with the Zxi4 4 iron in that utility iron role.

The ZXi7 portion of my combo set came in today, 3 weeks after my ZXi5 4-5-6 irons did, all with KBS TGI 95 shafts.  Went and picked them up over lunch, order was made April 28.

Have a tournament this weekend, so I am going to wait until it is over to put them in the bag. Wish they had all showed up weeks ago.....

I would not hesitate to game the MKii over the ZXi.  ZXi does feel a little softer but the MKii were really good irons as well.  I might have actually preferred them honestly.  If you can get a clean/new set, I don't think you will be disappointed.

You can't go wrong either way. I've somehow managed to own the last 4 sets of the 5 series.

I think the MKii series is the best since the 565. The ZXis feel a bit softer.  I hit them well in the bay....but not as well off green grass.  I actually considered buying a mint of MKii ZX5s set as backups.  But the prices were still a bit higher.  And the source you mentioned pretty much had the same price for a new set so I'm giving the ZXis another run with a different shaft.

Also think my short dalliance with them was during a few week period where my swing had gotten wonky.  I saw my instructor after I saw them and he quickly spotted a fixed an old issue that had snuck back into my swing. I low key regretted selling them before I had a chance to try them when I felt more confident in my swing.

And still waiting 😕

Finally they arrived!

Had to reach out a few times to my seller and the postal service took forever but finally got them in my bag yesterday(!!) and went out and played a round of 9 holes at my local course. It was pouring down rain and windy so didn't really get that eureka feeling, but hit some really nice shots nevertheless! Hit one toey shot on the range with my 7i before hitting the course and played my best score so far this season with +4. Dispersion seems very good, and I really enjoyed the turf interaction.

I went from Bridgestone J40 DPC's with C-taper with heavier shafts, but what I found was that the shafts on these are longer. Both sets are supposed to be +1/2" length (DPC's were soft-stepped S+), but starting to wonder. Bought the DPC's off here back in the day. Has anyone else experienced the same?

Heart is telling me ZXi7s (I’ve loved the prior versions). Head is telling me ZXi5s. I’m not big on combo sets but who knows. Any better players go full set of ZXi5s?  How are they?

I grabbed a set of ZXI7s (4-PW) last month and can’t speak highly enough of them. They feel amazing, they are super consistent and surprisingly forgiving. (FWIW, I’m currently playing at an 8 handicap down from 10 a year ago)

At times, I struggle to find confidence with the four and five iron though. I ordered the ZXI5 four and five irons a few weeks ago and have played four rounds with them now, plus a few trips to the driving range  (I had the 5 iron bent 1° week in loft to transition better into my ZXI7 6 iron). The ZXI 4&5 irons are so much easier to hit consistently for me. Higher launch and trajectory and a little more distance. The only thing I don’t like as much is that they don’t feel as buttery. They have a little more of a click to them.

I’ll keep the ZXI7 four and five around, but they won’t be in my bag for the time being. If I was just a little more consistent with my ball striking, I’d go ZXI7 all the way through the set. They feel so good… but, alas, a combo set it will be for me.

This is strange. As I mentioned, my swing had gotten a little wonky and is grooved again. So much so that I shot the best 9 of the last two years yesterday and my iron play had been rock solid the last few weeks. So I bought another set of ZXi's.  The same Modus 105 shaft I've played for years and know backwards and forwards.  The irons actually were actually delivered while I was playing yesterday.

I took them to the range today for a quick shakedown session. Once again, I struggled to hit them consistently.  On the shots I hit well, the felt 'denser' at impact and launched higher than the Mkii.  But for whatever reason I just couldn't get grooved with them.

I'd planned on putting them in the bag for tomorrow's round.  I'll likely just put the ZXi 7 and 9 in and fill out the rest of the iron slots.

I'll give them a week or so to see if they come around. If not, another WRXer is gonna get a helluva deal on some mint irons.

Just got some ZXi5's and I am super happy with them. GIR went up. Proximity to the hole was cut in half. I am looking forward a record low score this season. I came off the Mizuno JPX 923 and the Srixons feel softer and more solid. I am definitely getting more spin off the short irons. Expensive, but worth it. I do NOT need them, but I really want a set of the new Ben Hogan CBs. Perhaps I may sell the 923s to finance them.......

Are you sure? I think they had a different way of measuring but now they are using a common standard and don't seem to deviate from their peers. Bear in mind the Bridgestone clubs are from early 2000's and might have been tip trimmed (?).

Anyway, taking them out for my first full round tomorrow, the 6i is still in plastic and I can't wait! The DPC's were great but I struggled with my iron play for years, and it wasn't their fault. Always knew my next set would be a set of JPX's but here I am buying Srixon's 😄

Srixon irons are about 0.25" longer than most other brands when measured the same way.

I take it all back. I think I was just horny about new irons and rushed things at the range. I had a commitment most of the day and took them out for a quick session between that and dinner. A combination of rushing and high expectations was not good.

I took put the 7 and 9 in my bag for today's round.  But I put the others in the trunk 'just in case'.  I hit a small bucket to warm up. I hit 5 9-irons on the button and realized it was just me yesterday. I  got the other irons and put them in the bag.

I played well today with the highlight being hitting the 7-iron pin high and canning a birdie on the second time she was ever kissed.

I know they did change how they measure them, but if you stop by a store grab a stock callaway (TM too) and srixon and you will see the srixon is longer.

5 rounds in with the ZXi5's and I have shot my round of the year twice, 77 then 75. Considering my handicap was trending closer to double digits earlier this year, it is safe to say I am loving the clubs. Consistent distances, mishit dispersion is way better than with my old irons, and the ball seems to be stopping on a dime with the snort irons.

For those that combo the 5 & 7 has anyone compared the 5i in both with the same shaft? I have not been able to test 5i but that is the club I usually want a little more height and steeper land angle to keep it consistent with the rest of the irons.

I have a set of the ZXI7(4-PW) and the ZXI5 (just 4 & 5 irons). All with Modus 120S shafts.  I bought the ZXI5 4&5 for the same reason you have mentioned here. I wanted higher launch and peak height and I also wanted more forgiveness out of those two clubs. I ordered the ZXI5 4-iron stock and the 5-iron bent 1° week to help with the gapping into my ZXI7 6-iron.

It does exactly what I was hoping for. Launches higher, travels just a little bit further, and has a nice descent angle for holding greens. The ZXI5 4-iron is equally as forgiving and comfortable for me. I like the feel of the ZXI7s better, but they don’t launch as consistently high as I would like in the 4&5.  Though the ZXI5 feel a little bit more clicky and not quite as soft, it’s just a feeling thing. The results are what counts, and I’m glad I had them built to combo with the rest of my ZXI7 irons.

Looking for some Srixon advice if anyone is willing. Been out of playing seriously for about 15 years and have started back up again. Currently using 2008 R7 TP Irons (players cavity back) from back then. Recently went to a full fitting, but didn't end up leaving with irons.

I tried the ZXi7's and hit them well, so I am considering buying these new to spec from the fitting off of the Srixon website (ZXi5 4,5 ZXi7 6-PW)

I also have the more inexpensive option to buy the previous model ZX7 MK2 brand new with the correct shaft I need, all I need to do is get it bent 1 degree upright (4-PW)

Is the added forgiveness, feel, and maybe 5 yard distance bump make up for the price difference? Is there anything to justify it other than maybe the zxi7 combo?

You'd be fine going with the previous model.

I don't think there's a 5 yd distance bump between prev model and current personally.  Maybe if the loft is stronger but otherwise the main thing I noticed between them is the zxi is a little softer feeling.

Agree with Rory4Pres, I don't think you would notice too much difference with the previous MKiis, I had a mixed set of them, newer models to me are very, very similar.  Minor refinement, not an overhaul of the design.   I went away from the MKiis and went down the hollow bodied path in a couple of sets of irons.   Saw the errors of my ways and am now back to Srixon.....

You say you are using the 2008 R7 TPs, man, I had two sets of those, loved them.....  New Srixon's should feel softer, play a bit longer, and be a bit more forgiving.  But for their time,  the R7 TPs were awesome, but grooves are not conforming anymore.

You'd be fine going with the previous model.

I don't think there's a 5 yd distance bump between prev model and current personally.  Maybe if the loft is stronger but otherwise the main thing I noticed between them is the zxi is a little softer feeling.

Thank you for the response. Definitely leaning towards the mk2 because of the price point. Having a 2 piece forge in the zxi7 be softer than the 1 piece design in the mk2 is definitely surprising.

Thank you for the response as well. R7 TP's feel pretty good when I flush them for sure, but off center hits definitely punish you. I think I need a bit stronger lofts than the r7 TP's since I am in my 40's now. That's one reason why I landed with the zx7/i7 series, my fitter said I would be best in the 28* 6 IRON range and that is the same exact loft as the Srixon.

Long time lurker first time poster.

Back playing golf the last few weeks after a 12 year hiatus (family and other sport commitments)

Recently made redundant and decided to buy new irons to replace my 20+ year old Titleist 690Cb's.

Landed on Zxi5/7 combo with true temper 115 mid shafts.

Picked them up yesterday and hit the course today.

Rusty early, 5 over front 9.. drawing them a little too much and figuring out distances as they're 4 degrees stronger than my previous set.

Made some adjustments at the turn and shot even back 9, hitting 8/9 greens in regulation.

These aren't as soft feeling as my 690's but they're a solid feel off the centre, and for me generates alot of spin. Almost too much.

Mishits don't lose alot of distance and the 4 and 5 iron in the Zxi5 are stupidly easy to hit.

210m with the 4 iron and around 200m with the 5 iron. Nice high ball flight.

Pretty excited to use these more and dial in distances.

Here in Australia they are $800 aud less than mizuno 925 forged and bang for buck they are batting so far above their price point.

If you're on the fence, don't be afraid to pull the trigger. I was a little worried about turf interaction as some have mentioned in here but I adjusted pretty quickly after hitting some thickish iron shots early. Absolute pleasure hitting these irons.

Label me a new Srixon fanboi.
