Played the OG zx7’s a couple of seasons ago but never played the mkii’s.  Currently playing the zxi7 and zxi5 5i and so far, I’m absolutely loving them!

Just got my clubs reshafted with project x LZ 5.5 (115g R+) shafts...

8-9 iron: z forged ii

6-7 iron: zxi7

5 iron: zxi5 (although currently not in the bag since i have 14)

zxi utility 4 iron

Playing first 9 holes with them tonight.  Hit a few sim shots with them last night and felt great but am concerned the spin rate is too low and not able to draw the ball.  We'll see if that's the case on the course.

I can draw mine, no problem.

So is there any concensus that these are appreciably better than the previous versions? Are they any higher spinning than prior years? ZXi7 specifically.

I’ve owned all three.  Performance differences are minor.  Mkii seemed to spin a little higher, but still lower spin.

they feel the same to me, and I’m generally sensitive to that.

aesthetics are where they differ.  Unless you like the look of the cavity in the zxi7, grab some new or like new mkii to save some coin

I know they did change how they measure them, but if you stop by a store grab a stock callaway (TM too) and srixon and you will see the srixon is longer.

This isn't the case. Just left PGA store and compared them to p770, p7cb, wilson staff model CB, and Titelist t100, all the same length as the zxi7.

Srixon irons are about 0.25" longer than most other brands when measured the same way.

Same length if measured with the same standard. Just did a comparison at the PGA store.

This is incorrect. I’ve measure in store, all on the same device (Mitchell pin ruler)

zxi7 and mizuno will measure about the same.

Titliest and ping Will be a little shorter than Srixon/mizuno, but measure the same as each other

Wilson, tm, and cally irons will measure shorter than Titliest/ping, but measure the same as each other

What are your measuring points? I spoke to the PGA people as well as called Srixon, and they both told me its been the same length since the inception of the ZX series and is the standard length. From the bottom of the Ferrule to end of shaft they are the same. the club heads themselves are different sizes, if you match end to end of those it will be different.

Full Playing length of the club using the device below.  Different oems have different length they insert into the hosel and also different hosel lengths.  your method doesn’t account for that.

They are all pretty close, with about 3/8 of an inch separating the long (Srixon and mizuno) from the shortest (TM, cally, Wilson)

Yes the zx are the same length as they have always been, but they changed how they measure them starting this year. I agree with @Pnwpingi210 that mizuno and srixon are a touch longer than other brands.

Can anybody who's gotten the ZXi5 approach wedge comment on it?  Specifically, how is the yardage gapping to the PW.

Thanks!

I have only had my A wedge for a few rounds so far, but I really like the gapping. I hit the P right at 140y and the A 125y. 9 oclock swing with the P/A gives me a perfect 120y/100y club.

I finally got a chance to get out with the new irons today. Although I didn’t get to practice very long, here are my thoughts condensed into a couple of sections.

I started out with the 9 iron as I was working through odd irons today. The first ball I hit was struck well. The LZ shafts in right at home with on delivery. This shaft doesn’t seem to deflect as much in transition as the $Taper does for me. That would cause some shaft droop coming into impact. No toe strikes here…today at least! I immediately noticed how these flight in a higher window than the CB/MB set in coming off of but without excess spin that cause the ball to fall right out of the sky in South Tx. The ball launched great and was going my normal distance into the wind. I like that the descent angle is more and will allow me to attack more pins.

The 7 iron was just as good. An easy launch up into the air with the normal distance. I don’t want to sound too boring here but it was very much point and shoot with this club.

Moving onto the 5 iron had me interested because I figured this would flight higher but it was nice to see that while it was up into the air easily, it wasn’t too high. It looked like it was flying just as high as my 7 iron, so I’ll take that. Honestly, it looked like all my irons were apexing similarly to one another and that is something I’m not used to. I usually see how different irons in the bag apex differently but that has also led to me adjusting my yardages to the clubs in the bag - not in a bad way but still. It seems like these will all top out similarly but hit the numbers they should go. Also, the feel of the ZXi5 didn’t disappoint. I was expecting this iron to feel much more springy or clicky. It was maybe a hair firmer but that’s due to the tech in this head to achieve what it set out to do, more ball speed and better launch. It does exactly that. I like what I felt with the 5 iron today. I usually hate going into a split set or use something that’s too hot or technology packed because of feel. This isn’t that!

The ZXi7 irons felt very nice even with our rock-hard Strata range balls. I can’t wait to hit off grass with my preferred ball of choice - ProV1 or TP5.

I’m liking what im seeing at this early stage. I’ll be sure to post this in the Srixon ZXi thread when it launches soon. I’m also going to get more images of these hopefully this weekend or early next week.

I’ve had all 3 , I think OG zx7 spun the least and was prob a touch less forgiving than mkii and zxi7. Mkii spun more than OG version. I think the zxi7 is lower spinish again almost similar to the OG zx7 but I think they are the most forgiving since the 745s. All amazing irons. But if you want the most spin I’d say go mkii but that’s my opinion and numbers I get, everyone could be different

Anyone gaming the 51 degree wedge in this set? Any good?

Or do you prefer a Vokey or Cleveland 50 degree?

Prefer the 51 deg wedge with my iron shaft in it, as I'm pretty much never taking less than 85% swings with my gap wedge. I have a 50 deg Zipcore wedge too, and it's awesome, but I feel more consistent and get a little more distance/less spin/better gapping with the A wedge. Thus, the 50 deg Cleveland wedge is gone, and I've replaced it with the ZX7 gap wedge

Ok, got a couple more rounds under my belt with this setup.

-been making really good contact

-low, penetrating ball flight but still still holding the greens no problem

-roughly 3-6 yards further distance than previous mp64's with ctapers

-shafts felt really good with 85% swing as well

-able to work it left or right

-really complement my 610 wedge shafts.

Considering doing a 5.5 soft stepped once to see if I can get a hair higher ball flight and slightly more spin.  Plus feeling a hair more kick in my swing wouldn't be a bad thing.

Do we have any indication of how pros are adjusting lofts on the ZXi7s and the 5s for those who are blending in the long irons? I find it strange they made the lofts so strong in this category.

I'm tempted to just bend the set weak to get standard gapping off of a 34 degree 7 iron, but wondering if there's any reason not to do that.

I went 1 degree weak in everything. Combo set 4/5 zxi5, 6-pw zxi7.

Honestly was going to set it up where I had 4 degrees between everything but didn’t feel like messing with it.

you’d have to believe someone like Straka isn’t playing them at stock lofts but who knows.

Typical pro combo is:

Srixon ZXi Utility (3, 20 degrees), Srixon ZXi5 (4, 5), Srixon ZXi7 (6-PW) - Shane Lowry

Srixon ZX5 Mk II (3-5), Srixon ZX7 Mk II (6-9), Srixon Z-Forged II (PW) - Keegan Bradley

Srixon ZXi5 (4, 5) Srixon ZXi7 (6-9) - Sepp Straka

If you're going the 4/5 zxi5 route (which i did), you only need to bend the 5 iron weak one degree and you're good. The 4 iron is the same loft, they don't start changing until the 5 iron. 6 iron zxi5 would need to be bent one degree weak as well to match and so on. Once you hit the 9 iron there is a 2 degree difference.

I would either go 4/5 in zxi5 or 4/5/6 if you aren't feeling as confident. I don't run a 3 iron, and instead use a hybrid or 7 wood.

Played my first round with the zxi7’s this past Friday.  First round in almost a year.  Man was it nice to finally get a round in.  The zxi’s did not disappoint at all.  Just as I remembered with my og zx7’s I had a couple of seasons ago.  Outstanding on low strikes and silky smooth out of the middle.

For anyone saying these don’t spin, I hit a 6i approach from 185 and it hit right under the hole took one bounce and spun back about 2 feet.  One of the best shots of the round.

Very impressed with these.  Especially on low strikes.

Personally, I think the single best improvement they could do on the ZXI7's on the next generation is go back to traditional lofts.

Really don't love adding bounce in order to get back near standard/traditional lofts.

any idea the bounce for these irons? I searched all over and couldn't find anything.
