Interesting. Definitely not all of the players go that route. There have been both older and younger Japanese players who handle all of their interviews in English if they're during the broadcast.

Marine layer was very much also a point of discussion in the thread, haha. That was quite a contentious time as it was also during the peak of propeller gate, when the mics were constantly picking up the network's plane buzzing overhead and it was somehow getting worse by the day.

I think that it's more so ( ^^^^THIS) than anything else. Plus, it limits those stupid interview questions. IMO

The constant mentions of Lionel Richie's house were what I remember. I thought "barranca" underperformed. Thankfully.

And sure it’s not ideal for us that he can’t speak better English. But I’m definitely not going to put him down for it. All I have to do is imagine that I’m playing professional baseball in Japan. Odds I could learn and feel comfortable speaking Japanese on that stage… Slim and none and slim has left the building! 

Definitely, and he is a  star in Japan and has a large media following that he has to deal with already. Why subject yourself to twice what everyone else deals with?

Yeah, I think they were scant in their mentions of that "other" mansion outside of the M-W telecasts.

I can order meals and find the right bus/train in Tokyo, and even say a few things about how the day is going, but no way in hell I'm giving an interview on national TV in Japanese : )

I'm guessing it's been said before in this topic, but I used to absolutely love watching this tournament. Always seemed like the perfect transition from football season to golf. (Never really watched much baseball, haven't watched the NBA since probably 2010, and college basketball with NIL money isn't the same). 

 

But looking at the leaderboard on Sunday, I really had no interest. I can't stand most of the guys on LIV, and didn't like them when they were on the PGA Tour, but at least I would watch to root against them. 

 

Yet another thing that bums me out about the state of golf.
