Been switching between the XV and Diamond lately just to get a feel of how they perform on course.

Just finished 36 holes with this Masters Diamond: ~100 strikes, 5 bunker shots and still rolling pretty straight on the greens.

Picked up a couple dozen ZStar XV on a lark. Had been playing QStar Tour, moved to Maxfli Tour recently. Motivation for the XV experiment came from a friend giving me a couple TP5x pix balls he'd received (he can't stand to use anything other than a plain white golf ball), and seeing some interesting distance results on course. Also intrigued by the slight bump in short game spin I've read about.

For context, I'm a 97-98 mph driver speed player. 7 iron is low 80s.

Have two rounds with them so far, rather pleased with them. Possible slight tee game distance increase, hard to say for sure with the rain we've had lately. The biggest difference is a spin increase in the short game and short irons, I've had a couple shots spin back a notable distance with even a 7i (986 Tour at 38°). The short game has seen some hop and velcro action on short to mid range pitches. Iron distance has been about the same as expected; worried that spin increase would affect that.

Interestingly, I find they move a bit more in side winds than the Maxfli Tours do. Haven't noticed any issue with headwinds.

Color me intrigued.

@NRJyzr Touched on it in the blade thread, but I'm curious why you went straight to the XV and didn't try the Diamond or regular Z-star after coming from the low compression balls... I guess just the distance increase? That's what it was for me, so I'm guessing it's the same for you, but thought I'd ask.

As I was saying over there, the 2019ish XV was really too hard and clicky, but I stuck with it just because my results with it were so good. The last couple of generations are much improved there to where it feels fine now and I don't even think about it, though the Diamond is still softer-feeling. Does the XV feel okay to you off those old blades?

Skipped the ZStar largely due to the results with TP5x sleeve. I've played the ZStar relatively recently, and wanted a larger departure from the QStar Tour. On XV vs Diamond, was a coin flip. 😉

The feel was an adjustment but it hasn't been bad. The MS11s are pretty soft, the 986 Tours aren't too far behind.

Based on today's results, it seems like I'm getting a few yards off the tee, but it's very much small sample size theater, too early to say for sure.

Small update... played a round this past weekend with the Maxfli Tour to develop a bit of comparison. It was at a different course, with slower greens, for what that's worth.

Distance between the Maxfli and XV is roughly equivalent, nothing notable, especially with the limited sample size. The biggest contrast was the short game and short irons spin. The XV checks up noticeably quicker on chips and pitches, and I saw more release with the Maxfli with short irons.

I'd given a sleeve to a higher speed friend, who played them during this round. He immediately noticed the improved short game spin, and I got some secondhand side angle views of it. If one likes using that spin in the short game, the XV is a good choice.

Going to continue with the XV. So far so good.
