JPX 925 Forged

I have a black 925 7 iron inbound for testing.  Have always been a forged mb/cb guy but after playing a set of T100 all last year, the tech filled players iron category has my attention.

Just ordered a set of Black JPX 925 Forged 5-G with Black T1 wedges.

Thinking they’ll offer the pop in the 5-7 that I am lacking as I approach senior status while maintaining control in the 8-G + wedges. Plus feel better than most others.

did you have any issues with getting a T1 sand wedge? I got a 48 and 58 ordered but shop said mizuno is currently out of the 54 and 56 in 2 different grinds when they checked.

The switch to MMT125S has made a big difference in dispersion and consistency.

I cut these to standard sizing (37" 7-iron) leading to a solid progression from D1 at 4-iron to D4 at PW/GW.

Somehow, total weight with the 125S is nearly identical to my Miura KMs (105TX or 10g lighter shafts but 8-9g heavier heads).

Testing between the two, I'm getting basically identical results with the Mizuno's occasionally going a bit longer but also with a bit less effort. Miuras are 2* strong (32* 7-iron vs 34* stock).

One notable difference is how easy it feels to hit the 925F 4 & 5 irons now. I don't need a 2-iron in this setup.

I did not have a good experience with the JPX 925 forged. But I think that might have been because the shafts were not what I needed. Cobra irons remain in the back for the season

I can't say I had a bad experience with them, they just couldn't beat out the 243s for me. Spin was a little lower and the feel in the 4-7 was just clickier than I wanted. The forgiveness was better for sure but only enough, the turf interaction was a little worse than the 243s.

Played nine Monday night finally with these irons and hit 9/9 greens I think for the only time in my life. Now I know the shaft and lie angle are the real heros here since this was my first proper fitting in over a decade but, I’m incredibly excited to have these irons in the bag. I will say, since others have mentioned it, that the mishits are alarmingly good though. I may have hit every green but I certainly didn’t hit them all in the center. My only concern is distance. My set is 1* weak from factory spec and I was hitting my normal yardages in 49* temps. Will have to keep and eye on that and update you guys.

Played a round and brought some Wilson mid irons for comparison. I can’t overstate how much longer the JPX are, even with the Wilson’s 2* strong. 8-p were great for divots - gained about 10 yards, no lie. This is shocking given that the lofts are about 1* different. Wilson’s want to dig on a miss, not the JPX. Found finding the low point on 5-7 to be tough though. Still working on that. With the Wilson’s all I need is a little shaft lean and I take turf. The JPX are more work. Found the JPX to be more forgiving which surprised me since I usually scoff at iron forgiveness. Still adjusting but feel a lot better today. These irons have a shocking amount of speed and a boring trajectory. FWIW the Wilson’s CB’s have dg 115 mid s300 stiff, JPX have mid 115 s400.
Side note - the black finish wears exceptionally well. Lots of divots with short irons and the cutaway that enters the turf shows no discoloration or fade.

After playing a few rounds and lots of testing, just re-shafted the JPX925Fs with the MMT105TX for a little more flex and less weight. MMT125S was fine, just like tinkering.

While I was at it, got a little obsessive with this build to get progressive SW, total weight, and balance exactly where I want it.

Final results:

  • 4 iron - D 2.4 - 414g
  • 5 iron - D 2.5 - 420g
  • 6 iron - D 2.7 - 426g
  • 7 iron - D 3.0 - 433g
  • 8 iron - D 3.2 - 439g
  • 9 iron - D 3.4 - 445g
  • PW     - D 3.6 - 453g

Each club is now about 8-10g lighter at the same length/loft/lie than with the MMT125S.

For those wondering, the original stock DG Mid115S were built pretty well in my set. They did use quite a bit of epoxy and tip weights to get to SW through the entire set and total weight was on a decent line.

I wonder where the discretion is? Mine definitely had no tip weights or seemingly no intention at all for consistency.

Of the 3 or 4 Mizuno sets I've taken apart from the factory / off the rack - each had tip weights throughout the set. JPX925F / 245 / 221s

SW and TW were all solid

I ordered mine through Club Champion but declined their suggested rebuild service due to the insane upcharges. They were very clear in telling me that nothing from Mizuno comes with any consistency which proved to be right. Makes me wonder if Mizuno doesn’t bother with the details on the sets shipped to CC since their typical business model is rebuilding them upon arrival? I suppose that begs the question of why build them at all and not send raw heads and shafts? Could also be an agreement CC has with the oems to send them simply glued up and not checked to back up their sales pitch and convince people to come back and have them rebuilt? I know this is tin foil hat territory but, certainly plausible. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Anyone have these with the Dart 90...how did the swingweights come out.  I'd love to go Steelfiber 95 but upcharge is pretty hefty.

I came from i95 reg and took a flyer on the MMT 105s and they have been excellent, really surprised as I tried the MMT 80 or what PXG was pushing and hated them.

That's funny I play 243s and got the 925F which I was excited about and hit well in the sim very stable and I really liked the long irons. but on course I just hit my 243s better and they feel way better. 925f feel like they have a lot more bounce and can lead to thinner strikes if youre a picker of the ball. I did learn that the shaft I got in the 925f is better suited for me so im reshafting my 243s to that. I already did the 243 7 iron to compare on course with the 925f.

Having trouble finding the original Recoils anymore, and the Dart's just have never been the same.  Also since I am now 49, I wanted to try some shafts a little softer in flex and try and figure out my new go-to iron shaft.

Both of my other irons (Srixon ZX7/ZX5, and Cobra Tours) are shafted with Recoil 110 F5, which is X flex.  My swing speed and tempo have both slowed down some after wrist surgeries, and because of wrist issues I have been playing graphite in my irons for almost 15 years now.

I tested a few different irons on course, and then went with those for a fitting.  Between what I saw, felt, experienced on course and the numbers from the fitting I decided on 925 Forged with MMT 105s.

Got the heads from here and ordered the shafts and had them assembled and ready to play on Saturday morning.  Hit 5-6 balls each with the 6, 8, PW on the range and then off to the course.  I was running late due to dealing with my dogs that morning.  SG Approach on Saturday with these clubs(Still working out my wedges, which weren't good) was +1.5 and hit 14/18 greens.  On Sunday with the irons I was +2.2 and 13/18 greens.  I missed two greens both days because of drives in the trees.  A few holes into Sunday's round I kind of figured out what I needed with these irons, trying to hit a lot of offspeed shots on the course and before the round on Sunday.  At this point I no longer feel like they are a new set of irons.  None of the, wow I have not tried this shot with these irons before, thoughts on any new shot because they already felt like they had been in the bag for months.

I know a lot of people will say honeymoon phase but I typically do not have an iron honeymoon, I will have bad days with these irons, sure and my stats will show it.  I won't always be positive SG or hit this many greens, but on Saturday I did not swing better than average  However what I know without a doubt is that when I am swinging OK to good this iron and shaft combo is about as good as it gets for me.

I’m also firmly in the club that couldn’t be happier with these irons. Came as close to ever (about 7”) to a hole in one the other day which was just another validation for me. That said, my love for the irons is with a solid understanding that it’s mostly due to finally getting the right lie angle and shaft for me. But I wouldn’t want them in any other head right now.

I’ve tried about most players distance, gi, etc and switched into graphite 3 yrs ago now and was very hesitant moving to the MMT 105’s because I’ve lived happily in the 115-121g weight range but since late last summer when I got the HMP with Mmts they’ve been great. Now with the Forged Black and the MMT’s it’s the best set I’ve owned. The confidence in the heads/shaft's/grips has been great. I’ve only had the one round so far and shot a 11 over after a 5 month layoff and the shots I missed weren’t a result of the irons. But the bad/good/great swings I had that day with the irons all reacted better than expected. Can’t wait to get out again hopefully this week.

The great thing about this set is that it comes from the factory as a blended set.  Sure the 5-7 iron are all "players distance", but for me none of them went any farther (1-2 yards which I think may be shaft and flex from where I came)out of the center than the Cobra Tours I have in the backup set, and they weren't any longer like for like than the ZX7's.  It was more for me that I am seeing more forgiveness.

When I hit a few shots with the i530, the Forged Tec, P790's and a few others they really pulled spin off and went a long way.  These seem to me to be like the P770 where the tec is more about retaining ball speed on off center than it is about increasing and pulling spin off of center strikes.  Maybe that is just how they work for me, because of my swing, but it is what my MLM2Pro shows on every iron.  I did get a chance to hit a few balls(older ones in my bag) on the range with a Trackman and saw pretty much the same, off the toe they keep spin to a point, and when the spin drops is where the ball-speed starts to drop thereby giving still a pin high shot on a less than stellar strike.

YMMV, but that is reason number 1 I love the irons.  Reason number 2 is they feel good, especially in the 8 iron to GW, and better than a lot of others with the 6 and 7.  The 5 is where I start to hear the click, stronger loft, so that makes sense to me.  Reason number 3 is they also look great behind the ball.  Giving me flashbacks to my ZX7's behind the ball, and even though the forgiveness is similar to the Cobra Tours the 925 Forged look much better.  I played a ZX5 in my 5 iron anyway, so it is a moot point there.  The Tours retain spin better farther to the toe, but the 925 Forged retain distance better high and they are the same roughly low on the face.  Reason number 4 is the turf interaction.  I am steep and these irons are fine with that, and yet because of how they do it I think a sweeper could play these easier than they could the Srixon V sole.

Finally got out yesterday with my new 923 Tour, which are a traditional forged shallow player's cavity back.

After two years of playing "tech filled" players' distance irons, glad to be back to traditional (and predictable) irons.

Finally got out yesterday with my new 923 Tour, which are a traditional forged shallow player's cavity back.

After two years of playing "tech filled" players' distance irons, glad to be back to traditional (and predictable) irons.

Didn't take long to see the 925 forged isn't for me.  Sticking with my T100 for now but always eyeing my next set of forged cb's or mb's.
