JPX 925 Forged

Spederman

Recommended Posts

I hated the Ai2000, hit two shots and didn't even really want to hit those.  I would say they compare more closely to a combo set of Callway Pro's and CB's.  Those I did like, but the pro portion of a combo set were more low spin high ball speed irons.  The CB's are very good.

I never hit the 825 Pro's, so I cannot comment on them.

Just picked up my custom set last week. Hit a large bucket and love them. I ended up going with 4-PW and ordered a T-1 Gap in 48*. Had my SW bent to 53* and carry a 58* LW. Cant wait for the course

Didn't take long to see the 925 forged isn't for me.  Sticking with my T100 for now but always eyeing my next set of forged cb's or mb's.

My initial impression of the JPX 923 Tour is quite good if you prefer a straightforward forged CB club.  I also took a very hard look at the Wilson Staff CB, but preferred the hosel and offset of the JPX.  The Cobra King CB/MB combo set also looks very nice, but short of a custom order, the stock transition is 6i (CB) 7i (MB) - would have preferred this to still be CB at 7i, and MB at 8i.

Finally got out yesterday with my new 923 Tour, which are a traditional forged shallow player's cavity back.

After two years of playing "tech filled" players' distance irons, glad to be back to traditional (and predictable) irons.

Seeing as how @Minarets and @speedeuphoria both gave me a confused response to this comment, I should have been a bit more clear in what I was saying.

What I had noticed with both sets of PD irons I had (each of which had "hot faces" and "more forgiveness") was that contact feedback was not always instructive, dispersion was irregular, and mishits reacted in unpredictable ways.  In contrast, in my first time hitting a traditional forged CB in three years, I saw my misses were not way off line, and ball flight was higher and more predictable.

I have become extremely suspicious of the entire "player's distance" iron concept, as the higher-positioned CoGs, wider soles, and jacked lofts all make (to me) the club harder to hit.  The gapping is also suspicious in many sets, where the loft between 7i and 8i appears to be designed to create the "longest" 7i.  I am starting to think this class of iron is designed to win the demo bay wars, where fitters can show the buyer a nice looking club, point to the hitters distance versus their current clubs, with the club having enough forgiveness to ensure the buyer gets a few decent whacks.

This is in contrast to a traditional player's CB (no goo, no hollow), where the misses generally are straighter (and short), CoG is lower, and launch and trajectory will benefit players more than "the farthest 7 iron".

In short, I'm suggesting if someone is looking at the JPX 925 Forged, they should also give the JPX 923 Tour a look (or the S3 if their wallets are fat).

Ignore the Driving for this thread......

I am once again pleased with the irons.  I hit all my irons well. I gained or was even in approach at every single distance except +200 yards(4 wood OB) and 50-74(working on my wedges still).  GIR Approaches my average proximity was 25 feet, and all approaches it was 45 feet.  I hit 11 greens.  It shows the ones with a penalty ball as short, so I had 5 short and 2 long.  One long was just off the fringe and one was a wedge that was a tad thin.  Of those short 4 were due to tee ball, but I did not miss a single green right or left.

If I can clean up driving I can get back to hitting 13+ greens a round and bring my handicap back down.

Driving well, that is another issue, and it pretty much all relates to ball position.  Two giant snap hooks(one out of bounds) neither with the driver on the front nine and a topped 4 wood as well, and a third giant snap hook on the back into the water, this one actually with a driver.  Also had a mud ball with a 4 wood from the fairway that was gone.

I took mine out for their debut and was delighted with the performance.  Excellent ball flight, the irons cut beautifully through the turf, easy to flight down and best of all went very straight.  Highly recommended.  They also look sick in the bag!

I hit a few 7 irons when at a driver fitting.  The difference in the top line from the 923 to 925 was striking to me  - very nice. Unfortunately no shaft match for what I have and only hit with a shaft that really isn’t for me. I’ll stick with my 923s - I got some data with my 7i and very happy and just no reason to change - but the 925 was gorgeous.

Had a fitting last week and the 925 forged were the winner. Also hit i530, t150, and king tours. 925F seems like a perfect blend of forgiveness without being a low spin rocket launcher. Mid 115 x stiff were the winner on shaft. They kept the spin up well for me. Now the wait for delivery and hoping the specs aren’t all jacked up like some have experienced.

I’m curious for those who have been playing them for a while, what wedge set up have you settled on? Im going with the set gap wedge since thats mainly a full swing club for me and thinking of going 53* 58* to maintain 5 degree gaps.

I ordered a T1 gap wedge, 48 black with the black shaft that matches my set. I like long chips with my gap wedge and feel like I can deloft a specialty wedge easier. I’ve had it for three rounds and my only gripe is that it lacks the punch of my PW. I have a 20 yard gap between the two. I don’t think bending it 1* will make much of a difference and I really don’t want to turn it into a butter knife leading edge by bending it 2 or more * strong.

I just ordered a 4 iron to go with my set, the 5 is such a pleasure to hit and I like having a 4 iron for the stinger shots and off the tee on a few holes.

As to the thin shots, that tends to be my miss when I tend to get lazy and raise up out of the shot too soon.  The 925 F seem to handle them well and still get off the ground quite good unless it turns into a dead top which no club can help. I came from the APEX CB and PING BPs and have played much better since getting the 925F, not too far out of that class of irons just a bit more help.

Hit a few thins shots today and last Friday when I played. Still go in the correct direction and close to the yardages I was expecting. So I’d call that pretty good.

Agreed with posters above.  They are super forgiving when a little thin.  Finding it hard to fault them after the first half a dozen rounds.  High and straight and still go where planned when execution isn't as it should be.

Coming back on here to say how much I’m loving the 925FB’s. Part of it is the practice I’ve put in to make my swing better, but these irons are great. Hitting some really great shots with them and getting everything expected out of them and more. The shafts (MMT 105’s) and these heads have helped me find more greens early in the season.
THANK YOU Mizuno for making these bad azz irons in black!

How do they feel with the MMT's? Did you hit them in steel shafts also?

I had one of the first sets of the 925FB in the bone stock set up (DG Mid 115 stiff), they were good in the limited mat session with the 8 iron. But I switched to graphite 2-3 years ago now and won’t go back. Bought them stock only because I was gonna pull shafts and reshaft in a diff graphite…but had success last fall with the 925 HMP and the Mmts so decided to sell and reorder with the mmts. So now I have set of the 925 HMP & FB with mmts.

Thanks. I'm going to get fit next week for Graphite shafts due to some hand and elbow issues. I have a new set of brand new mp63's I was probably going reshaft, until I got tempted by the 925f.

I’ve always liked Mizuno irons but dabbled back and forth with irons over the years from most of the brands out there. Last year played the 245’s with Proto Recoil 125 and enjoyed, but felt my game wasn’t up to the 245 because top line seemed small to my eye. Thus the switch to the HMP and those are great, but Mizuno had to drop the Forged in Black and to me they’re a perfect spot between the 245 and the HMP. plus I’m a sucker for the Black.

Echo @eddiebigeddie's thoughts.  Terrific irons.  So high and straight and feel very soft when flushed.  The Mid 115 is great for this head.  The black looks fantastic (also have the s400 black Mid shafts).  Didn't think I would find an easy replacement for the 919 Tours but these are just as good.  I've literally hit the flag stick twice in the 6-7 rounds I have played, once each with PW & 9 iron.  No complaints thus far.

But to answer the question, I go 48, 52, 56.

This is very sensible gapping when you have a strong PW and only three bag spots.  I had tried 48-54-60 for a few years and it wasn't great.

My son has 925 FB with MMT 105s and I think they feel great and stable.  One of our pro’s has 243’s with MMT TX and they feel great too.

I hit a few with my son’s irons tonight and thought I might like the MMT feel over the PX LZ in my T150.  For me the MMT is a solid, crisp feel and the PX LZ is a more mushy feel.  This is the same way I describe a Ventus  Blue vs a Tour AD DI but I’ll gladly take either.

Just wanted to update and answer a few questions.

I have decided to move on from these for a few reasons.

For the limited play with plenty of range time, the finish is excellent. No different than chrome and seemingly better than satin.

Gapping is tricky. I have the gap wedge and a 54 that I was going to bend to a 53 but a 52 would make more sense. 7 iron to 8…I find the 8 iron to go the distance expected, for me. Reasons I’ll get into below. Therefore the hot Chromoly did not have an effect.

Reasons I am moving on. These are in the BST, trade friendly.

1. Black finish. While it looks cool, I have a hard time getting used to the look down at the ball. Also have trouble finding a club in the bag. Not just the 6 to a 9….

2. The 7 iron looks strange to me. I’m used to a lofted 7 iron. This looks like a 5 iron to me.

3. Chromoly feel. While not so much while playing, especially on good strikes, but just dragging a ball to hit on the range. Very metallic. Also little shoots with a 7 around the green jump for me.

4. Shaft. I’ve lost some club head speed. The Stock DG mid TI S400 that I picked up is not sustainable. Time to move on. Reshafting doesn’t make sense for reasons above.

so I am looking at smaller chrome/satin options with more loft. See the BST and offer a trade if you’re interested.

Can anyone comment on how well they handle thin shots?

I guess it all depends on "thin" but I they aren't any more forgiving than any other similar iron I've ever played.  Oops, I'm in the '25 thread, lol, and I'm playing the '23s - having hit the '25 in some limited testing there isn't much for difference at all IMO and I prefer my '23s.
