What do you think Mizuno S1, 2 & 4 will be?

Recommended Posts

S1 will be butter on a stick to compliment the utensils above. Hah. I'm hoping S4 will be a full set of slotted 223s with the same sole width as S3. Please hear me out, Mizuno. We don't need another chunky monkey set of soles like 243. Y'all need a competitor to ZX7. ASAP.

Well considering the S3 is the cavity back and it's freaking tiny. I'd guess as follows;

S1 = a butter knife glued to a golf shaft

S2 = a dessert fork glued to a golf shaft.

S4 = the S3 but with a strip of lead tape.

Beautiful, that one got me laughing.

So we know what the S3 is.  Seems to pay homage to SC 18 split cavity and MP 64.

Reportedly S! &2 will be MB, and S4 CB.

Here are my uneducated guesses, thinking this line will draw from the past:

S1 = Modern MP 14

S2 = Modern MP 32 cut muscle

S4 = Modern Tzoid CB

Oh man. T-Zoid pros were my very 1st set of irons. And one of my all time favorites. I know it’s just an uneducated guess on ur part. So I won’t get my hopes up 😐

My first set of Mizunos were the Pro IIs and other than the hideous PW, it is still one of my favorites sets of irons. The 2 iron stayed in my bag until fairly recent as it was my favorite club...so good. Personally, I'd love to see a return of the T-Zoid family, all the way through the woods. A more squared off blade that was a little long heel to toe that's co-forged with tungsten to move the CG the center would be fantastic.

The one thing about these players muscle cavity irons, is that they are not much if anymore forgiving than their blade counterpart. And often, players actually perfer the blade version. A couple that come to mind are the MP-18 SC and the MP-30s. That being said, I find the S3 interesting and not sure the direction Mizuno plans on taking them.

I think the slot would have to be covered even though golfers love that Bridgestone open dual pocket look. But a very thin micro slot for all irons, something like the classic Ping i210, that blends perfectly with S3 would be a beautiful thing. The badge for the 925 Forged is a little big and people can tell the difference in the chromoly so not that design.

The unsexy answer…

S-1: 241 (or equivalent) - the classic MB

S-2: 245 (or equivalent) - the HMB

S-3: Tour CB

S-4: 243 (or equivalent) - the blended CB

Call me a cynic, but I’m not totally certain that Mizuno is headed for some major design revolution when they’ve been successfully refining their MP line over the last few cycles. I’ll happily eat crow if I’m wrong, but…

The MB has been largely unchanged already, at least since the MP-20 (and really, what needs to change here? It’s one of the best on the market).

The 245 is, by all accounts, an outstanding achievement of an iron set. If it’s good enough for Luke Donald…

The 223 was one of Mizuno’s best sellers in recent years. I’ve seen this set most frequently of the three in the wild amongst competitive tournament players.

The REAL question is what will the S-2 be. I know the rumor is that the numbering system correlates with the iron’s ‘playability’ but that would suggest there’s not room for both the blended and hot metal sets after the S-3, unless 1 and 2 are MBs and 3 and 4 are CBs. I’d just be surprised if they dropped either of them for something radically different and/or less playable.

I have a suspicion that this move might be to appease all the people who played the MB but wanted better combo options than 243, 245, or JPX Tour mid/long irons. S-3 will likely be easier to properly gap and still look cohesive in a set. Plus it reinforces (going forward) that JPX is truly the GI line and MP is the ‘players’ line.

I just don’t know why the S-3 is not chrome, unless the S-2/S-4 are going to be combo options with the S-1 in chrome. It will be a big miss for me if the S line isn’t uniformly chrome OR satin. I don’t have a preference, but I’d be annoyed if I wanted a combo set and half of it was chrome and half was not.

To add to my post above…

What I’d like to see is the options to…

- Combo MB short irons with one-piece CB mid irons.

- Combo MB short and mid irons with HMB long irons.

- Combo one-piece CB short and mid irons with a ‘hot/hollow’ CB long iron (like the old MP Fli-hi).

- Blended set of one-piece CB short irons, hot/chromoly mid irons, and hollow CB long irons.

(Short is 8-PW, mid is 5-7, long is 4 and up)

So that gives you…

S-1: MB

S-2: HMB

S-3: One-piece CB

S-4: Progressive blend from one-piece CB to Hot Metal/Hollow CB

That’s pretty much it. For me, Mizuno really had the formula cracked with the MP-4/64/54/H-4 lineup. Pretty please just run that back. And make it all chrome. And I’m optimistic that people will go nuts for it.

I saw it mentioned somewhere that the S-1 and S-2 would be blades.  Seems odd but only thing I can think of is S-1 would be classic blade and maybe if we're lucky S-2 would be more like a MP5 blade where it's a little larger.  That would be awesome if that was the case.  My favorite set of irons I still play are some old MP5's and I would absolutely love a new version of that platform.

That really was a great line. If they reran that with the copper underlay, I'd easily play 4-7 in mp64 and 8-pw in the mp4. I've found the mp4 to be a little more forgiving than the last 2 mb releases and I'd be shocked if the S3 is as forgiving as the mp64.

I think you may be on to something. It would make design sense for S1 to blend with S2. MP 245 did look quit a bit like MP 241. Wouldn't be much to thin the topline, narrow the sole and bam, S2 hottie. If that were the case, I might wait for the S1/2 instead of 3/4 combo.

It’d be great if there was a “MP-18 MMC equivalent” S set with a little more forgiveness and stronger lofts.  I’d also love that in a combo set with the S3s but with the whole combo set engineered 2* stronger so i wouldn’t need to bend the S3s which adds offset.

I’ve been gaming the MP-18 SC/MMC set since 2018.  Absolutely love them, but these new Mizunos will be going in the bag this spring!

Is there a chance they roll out all 3 at next scheduled iron release and dump the current 24x line?

I can’t see them releasing all the JPX, these 4 new irons and continuing with the 24x line.

@bobfoster Why wait for a modern MP32 i.e. presumably you could find a clean Mp32 (or a "Yoro" version! YOLO!) without much effort?

I've found a MP69 Yoro at a great price, for my enjoyment.

Give me the original MP-32 with the same satin finish and sole grind as the S3 with updated badging and I will buy back up sets.  Oh, and go back to the old mizuno "standard" 1 inch black ferrules. Might be the only iron that could end my iron purchases permanently.    I truly would sell every set I own and stock up.

The 32s were a big deal to me. Got them the year they were released (2004 I think). First Mizunos I had ever played. Fell in love immediately. Have been playing Mizzy irons ever since. Weirdly, for some reason I've never felt in sync with their drivers, FWs, or wedges, but I'm a permanent fan of their butter irons.

I do think iron technology has advanced somewhat in the last 20 years - so I'd love it if the S2 wound up being an updated version of the 32s.

[NOTE: I actually still have my 32s. Ordinarily when I buy new clubs, old ones get sold, or donated to First Tee, but I kept these just for some sort of weird nostalgia purpose - I almost never play them, but can't bring myself to get rid of them.]

The OP is closest to the mark, methinks. If you read the fine print from Mizuno it specifically says all the irons in the Signature line will be one piece forged. So no HMBs, or anything like that. Also the S-1 and S-2 are blades so the S-2 will not be a Grad MP (though that could be a good candidate for the S4!).

The pro at my course who is tight with the Mizuno rep confirmed that the S-3 is inspired by SC MP-18 and suggested the S-1 will be influenced by the MP-18 (which I still game and think quite underrated but Keith Mitchell loved them, so there's that). I would love to see a modern MP-29 (another of Cashmere's faves). I think a Cut-Muscle S-2 like the MP-32/MP-67 is a great guess and would be extremely well-received. Fingers crossed. Whatever they come up with the S-3 (which I saw in person 2 days ago and to which pictures don't do justice, it's drop dead gorgeous!) has me thinking us old school mizuno blade fans are going to be extremely happy. Love hearing a 6 year product cycle as someone who plays a set for a decade or more.

Having just bought a set of the S-3, I would happily fork out money next year if the S-2 is a MP-32esque release in satin.

I still own a set of MP-32 and periodically go back to them.  It is the only iron set I can't let go of.  Had two sets at one point in time, but let go of them because I hated the DG S300 in them.  Still sort of regret letting them go because they were in perfect shape.
