Cobra King 3DP Tour

Homa and Woodland are playing 3dp irons. They show the lattice on some just for marketing purposes. Eventually you’ll be able to order a variety of heads with a ton of custom options, at least that is the goal.

These are the irons I was referring too.

You aren’t referring to a full set, are you?  I haven’t seen anything saying Homa or Woodland are playing 3DP except for maybe their longest iron/driving iron.

I think you are missing the point of 3dp. Its not like traditional manufacturing. They can literally do anything they want and each head is printed to whatever they put into the system. Their (tour staff) irons and wedges are printed on a machine hooked up to a computer, same machine making the retail stuff with. The product they are currently putting out for sale called 3dp is just them producing the same model and specs over and over. That is not the end goal or the purpose of spending all this money on this tech. Eventually you’ll be able to pick from a myriad of options and they will print custom heads for every consumer.  Blade length, sole width, bounce, loft, etc….  Woodlands entire set is 3dp with tungsten aligned in each iron for what he needs as far as cog/launch/spin etc… homa’s are solid metal put into the system to resemble the titleist mb’s he played previously.

Yes, those are all 3dp built to have the same dimensions as his previous titleist irons. Same sole, top line, length etc.  they look like the current retail model on purpose.

Homa and woodlands irons are all 3dp mb or retail 3dp cb.  It’s printed on each and every iron.  Max is playing the retail 3dp 4 iron.

Sorry, I was referring to the 3DP Tour iron specifically, not 3D printing in general.

I think there’s some confusion when using “3DP” since it’s referring to the 3D printing process, but it’s also the name of the retail line.

What I was getting at is Gary and Max aren’t using the full set of 3DP Tour irons that are available to us.

Maybe.  I’m not confused.

Garys MBs say 3dp limited on them.  I know they are different than the retail 3dp limited irons.  I think matti schmid also plays a set similar  to Gary’s.

Im looking for the podcast where the president of development goes more into detail on woodlands irons. The one above talks about homas irons at least.

this one is not the one im looking for but it covers those topics.

“So I don't know if he's the kind of guy that will like take a club in and out of the bag from one like round to the next, but many of them do. Yeah. And so right now, I think he's got one CB in, and then he's got a, from a six to the pitching wedge, these are 3D printed MBs.

And this is something new for him.

Excuse me? 3D printed MBs?

MBs, yeah.

Since when?

They are spectacular. So here's how it went. We had been prototyping versions of that with Ryan Roach and Drew Whited.

The two of them are in my innovation team, and we knew we could make really good irons in really almost any shape, like an MB, a CB, a King Tour, even a little bit bigger. We knew we could do magical things with this 3D printing, but no one had really put anything in play yet. So Max was the first one.”

What they say on them means nothing here. I think the issue is that we are conditioned to assume the limitations of traditional iron production. There are no limitations now. They can put anything they want on them and shape them however they want. They don’t need molds/stamps and they are not limited by computer milling system requirements. If they wanted to make a sphere with a hosel sticking out of it or a frying pan shape they can just input it and print. Its wild.

I’m not sure what issue you’re talking about……

the irons are custom 3dp MBs that are 3dp printed, custom to Gary’s spec.  They say 3dp limited on them.  It’s pretty clear on that.  We don’t know exactly where the mass is moved around on his set, but that other stuff is clear🤷

Maybe this is just my opinion(which doesn’t count for much) but what’s the expectation with the MB’s?

The 3DP’s are extremely easy to hit given their size and when compared to irons with the same size/profile. The MB’s would reduce that area to miss across the face and it feels like you’d lose the value of what they have accomplished with the current profile.

With the 3DP, I have an iron that is relatively comparable in size to my BPS, a little more distance, higher height, same spin but the forgiveness across the face is so much better. What’s the benefit of shrinking the iron even further other than just optics?

Probably more control and spin.  The 3dps were ultra low spin for me.

I can agree there but I weakened mine by 2 degrees and they are exactly where I needed them. I believe Matt Blois did the same thing with the Limit3d irons(discussed this in a WITB video) and it made a huge difference for me. The LA Golf L series shafts didn’t help + they were delivered to me at roughly 1* strong from Cobra.

Yeah - most tour players take a ton of loft of at impact, much more than Matt was in that video (which is odd cause he was at one point very low dynamic loft at impact).

weakling those irons 2 degree isn’t going to be enough. When I demoed spin was near 5k with a 7 iron and a prov1x.  Weaking 2 degrees isn’t going to solve that problem for me, and I probaly don’t delfot as much as most pros.

Issues that some will have with strong lofted/ low cg irons:

1) they go too far

2) they go too high

3) they don’t spin enough

as for the blades its being assumed you could get a more compact head with the cg like a blade but with some added stability. So you would get lower launch, more spin, and a club that is easier to control. Its a lot easier for me and many others to get great numbers out of a blade. It would be nice to have a touch more forgiveness heel to toe without lowering the cg for higher launch/less spin.

I am using the set gap wedge. While I do like it, it is probably the club I am most likely to come up short with on a full swing. Maybe a little too high and spinny at times. Not seeing the same with the pitching wedge.

That is only full shots though. Half and 3 quarter swings it is super consistent and easy to hit that distance number. Chipping with it has been good as well.

Does anyone else think the heads on these feel really heavy?

Based upon the initial reviews and feedback of the 3DP Tour, I suspect Callaway, Taylormade, Titleist and everyone else have already made a massive investment in their own 3D printing capabilities. This feels like one of those evolutionary steps in golf, much like moving from persimmon to metal heads for drivers. There are just so many directions 3D can take golf club design within the same year that a casting or forging process just haven't.

5 years, 7 years from now, will anyone be surprised if all OEMs are 3D printing irons?
