Maxfli irons?

I had a chance to hit the XC2 and 3 today at Golf Galaxy.  The 2 is a sharp looking iron that was forgiving for my toes side miss.  I didn't think the XC3 had as much of a shovel vibe as I expected, but honestly I hit the 2 better and I like the look more.  The feel was excellent and I would definitely game these.  The one issue I was having, which is part of the reason I sold my Mizuno 225s, was that descent angle and spin were lower than I would like.  Descent angle was around 45-46 and spin was hovering around 4000 with a 7 iron.  The club was consistent between solid strikes and slight mishits, but I really need to get both of those numbers up.  This was with the stock 115 shaft, in both regular and stiff flex.  I was getting about 160 carry on Trackman (which is my typical 7) but the roll out was putting me close to 175 due to the spin and angle.  I got more distance with the R, but no change in descent angle or spin.  I personally think TS3 is the way to go for me, and I may dabble in some TS4 short irons down the road.

Hmm, did you try other shafts? My Golf Galaxy has about 15 or so different shaft offerings with X C2 and XC3 is made on.

I typically play an MMT105 stiff which they don’t offer which has had me a little disappointed.  However, I tried the 70 g MMT and the numbers I’m getting are quite incredible.  I’m getting 5500 spin with a 7 iron, a 50° descent angle and 175 carry.  I typically carry my 2021 P790s 167 with 5500 spin and a 49° decent angle.

I did not, so I definitely think that played a factor in it.  Maybe I need to bite the bullet and try graphite!

Don’t know why but I get low spin with the DG Mid 115 shaft. I actually get more spin with Project X Rifle 5.5s! I hit the DG Mid 115 in an Ai200 7 iron and spin was 4800. Too low.

I would first try another shaft. Maybe lighter, maybe not, but definitely a different profile. Like try a KBS Tour, which is more linear than DG Mid. I would not try too drastic a change if you are used to 115g range. Weight is a key to get right.

Next I would look at lofts. XC2 7 iron is 30.5, essentially a 6 iron in loft. Traditional 7 irons are 34-35 degrees, so if you weakened the XC2 1.5 degrees it still is strong and may solve your problem. You may not even lose carry. I have weakened lofts and seen carry go UP due to much better trajectory. Stopping power will be better for sure.

Loft changes have a much greater impact on spin than shafts, but in the case of DG Mid I think some people spin them less and that’s how it is for me. It is a shaft I can play but I don’t prefer the stiff butt, stiff mid, soft tip feel.

If you like the irons there is no doubt you can dial them in to specs that work for you. You are not far off.

Callaway AI Smoke Triple Diamond Max 9 degree driver w/Diamana TB 60S

TaylorMade Stealth 5 wood (tour issue, 17 degrees) w/TPT Power Series 16 HI

Mizuno ST230 Max 7 wood w/UST LINQ Blue 7F4

New Level irons, 702CB+ 5-6, 702CB 7-P w/Project X Rifle 5.5

New Level SPN wedges (50SS, 54VS) w/Dynamic Gold s300

Ping Glide 4.0 wedge (58, E grind) w/Dynamic Gold s300

You raise some good points. I honestly was never a DG guy, even in my younger/faster days.  I was always an OG Rifle player, but back then my PW was 48.  I think I’m overdue for a brand agnostic iron fitting to find the best fit for my current swing and toe side miss.

Got to hit the 5i (XC3), 8i, PW (both XC2) of my buddies.  Still not sure I love his Steelfiber 110.  Could be the midsize grips. Not a fan.  But man they feel so pure and the sole interacts so well with the turf.  I love my P790 ‘21. These have me rethinking.  The XC3 feel about the same. I definitely think it’s a great combo iron as it doesn’t feel or look like a different kind of iron at address.  But I don’t find the XC2 intimidating enough to go for the larger, uglier brother.

I take it they are not available in the UK?

Would probably be a good idea for Decathlon to try to pursue a Maxfli licensing deal to carry the ball, irons, and accessories with Dick’s. Would be a win/win for both.

Man, given how much you love your P790s that speaks volumes.

I am looking at these too. Clean lines, tech story makes sense, and I could use a few more yards without giving up a classic look.
Like a lot of people are saying though, I also expect these to go on sale and don’t want to be hasty pulling the trigger if we may see price drops/ coupons after July 4th. Hard to wait though !

I bought a set.   Custom ordered with Nippon Modus 120.  Probably a few weeks before they come in, but I will leave a full review.  I couldn't resist.  I'm a Maltby fan and these are a Maltby on steroids essentially.  Pricey for Maxfli with the upgraded shafts but whatever.  Also picked up a set of modus 120s that Im going to put in some Maltby TS3s so I can give a true side by side comparison as I know there are plenty of people out there that are looking for this

I’m looking for this.

So I have not hit them side by side yet.  I have hit the 6 side by side on a few shots but not a full range session yet.  The XC2 are significantly smaller than the TS3.  The TS3 does seem to launch a bit higher as well.  However, they seem pretty comparable on a forgiveness level. Thin misses do go a fraction higher with TS3.  The Maxflis really do feel fantastic though.  I think they may be a fraction draw biased, could just be me as well but they are pretty easy to turn over.   However, I like them a ton, so much that I decided to order an XC3 6 and 7 iron to mess with as I think this has massive potential to be a combo set.  The Maxflis have a unique feel.  Very soft, very solid.  My one complaint that unless it is thin, it can sometimes be hard to know where you hit it on the face.   I've hit some that didn't feel right per say but the ball launched high and looked like a normal shot would.  I cant wait to do more testing but as of now Id recommend these irons to anyone.  They also seem to have appropriate spin too.  I have not hit on a monitor but just using my eyes on course, they definitely stay in the air and dont seem to go stupid distances for their lofts.  They are exactly what I was hoping for.

Really?   B/c here are some xc2 vs ts3 pics (the sole ones look exactly the same):

I just went on a built a set with DG Shafts instead of the lighter ones (Extra $40 per club) and NDMC Grips (Extra $12 per club) and it comes to $1,372 pre tax. That is strong for a house brand made in China.  I just don't see people paying that when name brand OEM's offer their own engineering and testing, while admitting, most are likely made in the same factories. Unfortunately, the name no longer carries the weight it once did like Hogan, Ram and others of the time.

This was my biggest concern when purchasing them. I only play 6-GW so my investment was a bit less.  GG always has a way to get 15% off so I did that too.  Im finding them to be as good as any other iron I have ever hit.  Im going to sell my pxg gen 7s in favor of these.  The tech in these are very good and anyone who gives them a shot will be very happy

Yeah I was going to wait for a sale.   I don’t generally like midseason club swaps so was willing to wait.  I assume these will go on sale at some point making the club price much more tolerable.
