Now just a general question about the timing of the fitting session. Does anyone feel as though they really weren't up to speed, so to speak, with their swing and would need another session to fine tune the specs?  

Thats kind of a hard question to answer. Being that  a lot of us are in deep winter, so our swings are definitely “cold”.  There is also a lot of filming and photography going on, and by the time I got to the driver several hours have passed and I was starting to fatigue a bit. So yea it’s not ideal, but it was still an awesome experience. I also dont think the goal of it was to compare your current bag to their stuff either. The goal was to fit us into the best possible Wilson products that they offer.

I am a single parent living in Minnesota in February.  Even during the season I rarely get to practice and play just enough to not have my game completely implode on me.  Honestly, my swing and fitting results could differ from one week to the next.  But, heading into the event, I knew that things could be dicey in terms of consistency.  I also threw my back out the Monday before.  I got it back in pretty decent shape with a trip to the walk in and a prednisone prescription but I wasn't 100%.  

 

I was very happy with how my iron fitting went.  Numbers and ball flight were typical for me.  If anything, I was shocked by the ball speed I was getting.  I think I hit 149 with the MB 7i.  My driver swing was not where it typically would be.  My speed was there, but my timing and mechanics were way off.  I was generating an absurdly low amount of spin.  Even using my own driver ahead of the new Dynapwr woods.  I was not getting the numbers I would typically expect.  It was a bit frustrating and I found myself really trying to adjust on the fly.  

 

A few weeks ago, I hit my Qi10 and the new Qi35 LS and was in the 2500rpm range with both.  During the event, I think my first swing with my Qi10/Ventus Blue+ combo was a mid flight slight draw that registered 1100rpm.  I hit a few more and that's just where my spin was living.  Getting super quick at the top and coming through with a closed face.  

 

Ahead of the event, I really really was hoping to land in the LS head.  It just looks so mean.  But, I am realistic and know that for the time I have to dedicate to the game, the Carbon would probably be the most logical choice.  With my super low spin ball flight I was getting, I was shocked to end up in the LS at the end of the day.  Using a higher launching shaft (LinQ Red M40X 6F5) we needed something fade biased to combat the low spin hook, went with a higher loft and lowered it down to 9.5 to open the face even further.  And, after they put the heaviest weight they could in the rear of the head, it ended up being the combo that got me the closest to where I need to be for spin.  It didn't magically change my delivery, but at least the ball didn't fall out of the air.  

 

In the coming weeks, I am going to book some time at an indoor sim that uses a Foresight GC Hawk to get some comparison numbers between the new Dynapwr LS and my Qi10 combo again.  With my back in a better place and no cameras around me, I expect my swing to be representative of what I would typically have on the course.  But I don't expect that I would need to completely blow up the fit.  The shaft is much different than anything else I have played in recent years.  But I am going to see how it goes.  During the fitting Harry mentioned that the softer shaft may actually help me calm down that quick move at the top of the backswing.  And, truth be told, I can go through spurts during the season where I struggle with that.  

 

But, being a person who likes to tinker, I will probably end up buying a shaft or two extra just to mess around with at some point.  But I don't think my winter rust makes the fitting not valid.  I am still me, and even though my swing was consistently off, I am still capable of hitting that shot a couple of times in a round.  Fit to your miss right? Lol.  Now at least I know my miss won't be as drastic when it pops up in the middle of a round.

Everyone with Golfwrx was great too.

 

I have to say my what really stood out to me was the effort to really personalize and make this trip memorable. Little touches of details like the name on the bag, the Custom Cabot head-cover, the bag tag with our name. The gifted bottles of premium liquor. 

Last, I had such a great time talking with and hearing all the “inside” stories on everything from tech talk to tour related stuff, other Oems and just about everything you could think of. 
 

Wilson Golf: The entire Wilson team is young, energetic, passionate and very motivated to reinvigorate their brand in the golf world. They have hired talented people who have worked on some very very popular equipment in the last few years from some of the big name competitors. They have a good idea of where they currently are and where they want to take it. In my opinion, if they keep up on the pace they are on, they will be successful. Just keep churning out good products, and get it in front of people.
 

Before this experience, I really didn’t ever give anything Wilson any time of day. Id say the first time Ive actually took notice was last years experience, but it was more me noticing that hey these guys are making some serious improvements. Im not going to sit here say everything Wilson is the greatest ever. But I will say, they have my attention now. No longer will it get overlooked. If I see a new  Wilson club at a golf shop or store, Im definitely going to check it out, and hit it.

 

I also like their image they kinda have going, like it’s kinda under the radar “cool” to be sporting wilson. I agree with @ColdOkieGolf that their soft goods are great. The polos, hoodie, vest, and hats are all top quality and look great. Big fan of the hoodie and rope hat. Harry had a Crimson and white hat that man if it was available to purchase, Id buy it right now. I really think they should make golf shoes. The tennis shoes we were given are pretty nice and I could just imagine having them with just a little more aggressive tread pattern for golf purposes…they would be dope! I feel like I am rambling now. Im really cheering for Wilson. 

All that being said, stay tune for a deep dive into my whole bag. 

 

 

Lucky guy.  I was at work bright and early this morning haha.  But, let's talk about the apparel for a second.  I am wearing a Wilson polo that I got at the event.  I am loving the fit and material.  The simple and understated Wilson "W" on the chest in the same color as the shirt.  I have some shirts from some pretty highly regarded brands that aren't as nice as this polo.  For instance, I like the material and fit of this over anything I have owned from Greyson.

 

I mentioned it to some of the folks at Wilson and they mentioned that they're working on refining their apparel lineup too.  

 

I didn't get the hooded sweatshirt.  I got a white pullover in it's place that I wore on the flight home yesterday that was really high end feeling too.  My only complaint on that one was that the fit was a little more snug than the polos in the same size.  As long as I don't gain any weight, I think I can get away with it haha.  

 

That vest we got that @ColdOkieGolf wore during the event was really nice too.  I will probably use the shoes at the gym for a while.  I like that style for lifts like squats and deadlifts.

Pings are on the left in each photo.   It's cold so I had to be inside with not great lighting, and I'm no Greg - so bear with.  Also keep in mind, the CBs were bent 2* strong, so they will show a little more topline and offset than a stock set.

No,  those are my friend's.  He just picked up those Blueprints. 

I play the S55s.   My clubs are supposed to be back Monday.  I'll get some comparison shots with the S55s and the G430 driver.

I'm a big Ping fan. I was really leaning towards a set of those Blueprint S irons as my S55s are getting long in the tooth - but after hitting the Wilsons, and especially comparing them next to each other -  it's the Wilson CBs all day for me!

Were the numbers pretty ideal or were there some low spinners like driver numbers? I'm looking for a new 5 wood and debating if I should go through the effort to finding a fitter near me that carries wilson.

I wasn't getting driver spin out of my strong 3w.  Very typical of what I would expect to see with what I used to use.  Granted, I haven't carried a 3w in a while.  On the 7w, it was definitely in the realm of what I have seen with my current 7w.  

 

In my fitting, the focus was never to chase any big distance numbers with the fairways.  It seems the focus was all about gapping.  And, I think based on the performance I saw, that the fairways are more consistency driven than distance.

I should get my clubs back Monday and happen to have Tuesday off work. So I could possibly do the woods head to head then.

I booked an hour of simulator time for tomorrow morning.  The itch to swing these clubs is too strong.  Plus, I want to get better acquainted with the LinQ Red I have in the driver.  That and I want to see if I can iron out the timing issues with my driver swing. 

 

I won't have my old clubs and this is going to purely be a session to get used to the new woods.  Saving the data collecting until I can get to the Foresight sim that's about an hour away and when my old clubs are available too.

The fairway woods have been the most surprising (in a positive way) to me from a asethetic standpoint. They have the perfect depth.

I was going to save this for my recap but since you asked... My biggest goal going into this event was to find a solution for a gap in the top end of my bag.  Ever since I got the T-150 irons my TSi3 3-hybrid has been rendered obsolete as my T-150 4-iron produces the same ball speed and carry. To get into the weeds, I really like the ball speed gapping that Titleist started to push with the launch of the T-Series irons in 2023.  Using that philosophy, I was looking to split the difference in ball speed between my T-150 4-iron and GT3 15° fairway wood, ideally around 140-141 mph.

 

I usually get around 133-134 mph ball speed with my 4-iron that carries around 209. We started with the Staff Model RB Utility 2-iron and got a similar carry. From there, we tried a DYNAPWR Carbon 7-wood.  Normally I struggle with hitting any fairway wood off of the deck.  For this reason, I prefer hybrids and have never carried a higher lofted fairway wood. I found the DYNAPWR Carbon 7-wood to be extremely easy to launch off the fairway.  It was going high, and I mean HIGH which resulted in a similar carry of 207.  The 207 carry number started to feel like an invisible hurdle we just couldn't get over. 

 

We were running out of time before lunch. I could tell my fitter, Ed, was pushing hard for the same setup in a DYNAPWR Carbon 5-wood. However, I was leaning toward the DYNAPWR 2-hybrid due to my history of struggling to launch fairway woods. @Wilson_Golf, being extremely generous as they had been all week, offered to build me both.  When I suggested that wasn't necessary and would be fine either way, Ed insisted and said “We want you to get what you want.”

 

On Wednesday morning, when I walked out of our cottage and onto the driving range to warm up for our round on Karoo I found both the DYNAPWR 2-hybrid and the DYNAPWR Carbon 5-wood in my bag. A few hours later, I was sitting 231 yards out in the fairway on the Par-5 6th hole of the Karoo.  This is the exact distance I have been struggling with - way too long for my T-150 4-iron and too short for my GT3 3-wood. It was slightly into in the wind and slightly uphill to FIRM greens. 

 

I was debating hitting either the DYNAPWR 2-hybrid or the DYNAPWR Carbon 5-wood. Since I had never hit them before I had no idea how far either one would go or which one to use. My playing partners from @Wilson_Golf convinced me to pull the DYNAPWR Carbon 5-wood and I proceeded to hit one of the top five golf shots of my life that flew dead straight, carried pin high, landed softly, and rolled out to 247 yards. In fact, it was the very first time I've ever hit a 5-wood and guess what? The camera crew was nowhere to be found. Go figure lol.

 

Are they the very best fairway woods on the market? That's not for me to say.  What I can say is I would've never been able to pull off that shot with my golf bag prior to this trip.

A quick update for anyone interested in driver weight.

Harry kept bumping up the weight until I was comfortable.  We went with a 15g in the back and 12g in the front.   Stock is, I believe, 12 back and 6 front.

Just got the driver on the scale and it came in at 203g.   A touch lighter than the Ping at 208.

I hit some balls this morning. For one, I wanted to play with the new toys and get better acquainted. And two, I wanted to work on my timing with driver. After flying back home Thursday I picked up a cold and kind of feel like I’ve been hit by a truck. But can still move ok. So decided to push on with my reservation today. 
 

After warming up, I started with the 6i and was reminded just how smooth these MB’s feel. I was working on my fade since it was a big focus during my iron fitting. Was going pretty well. I set the green at 220y and out of a half dozen shots I hit it 3 times, was just off the back once, and fanned 2 of them just a bit right. That’s pretty good for me from that distance. Getting a nice strong ball flight. I tend to hit the ball really high. 120-135 ft peak height is not unheard of for me. So seeing these coming in a little lower was nice. 
 

 

Then it was on to 7w. My current Ai Smoke TD 7w has been impressive. I do really like it. It can have a tendency to launch higher than I expected and it is kind of a ball speed monster at times and I have blown over the green in bad situations. If I could change anything with that spot in the bag, I’d probably want to see something with more consistent ball speed and launch. Eliminate the really hot shot. The Dynapwr was doing pretty well. Still trying to hit that fade and it was pretty consistent. Lost a few to the right by leaving the face open at impact but I’m pretty happy with its performance today. The really long shot was kind of an outlier. Just came out with a little less spin. And that same shot with the Ai Smoke can get into the low 170’s for ball speed. 
 

 

I struggled to launch the 3w. And that’s a me problem. I always struggle to launch a 3w. It’s typically a tee only option for me. So after a couple shots off the deck that were ok-ish, I put it on a tee and hit a few mid launching bullets. Carrying about 280 which is pretty much ideal for that spot. 
 

Driver was where I really wanted to focus. I’m actually going to post more on that in a bit. I’m sitting in my car and have to get home. Will be a little long winded. So going to make a separate post for it.

Ok. So my driver swing during the event left a lot to be desired. I hit my irons decently. But my timing with driver was off for lots of reasons. During the round it progressively got worse until the last few holes where I was able to dial it in.  Rust, nerves, adrenaline, sore back, blah blah blah. Life happens and those are things I’ll have to deal with regardless off and on. 
 

I was really focusing on smoothing out my transition and not getting my hips firing too soon and too fast. My spin numbers at the event were really low. Today, once I started getting the timing down, I was starting to see my spin numbers rise into a more manageable range. I decided to start playing around with weight and lift settings just to see if I could get things dialed into an easy to launch yet mid spin combination. 
 

My setup is the 10.5° (set at -1°) LS head and Lin-Q Red 6F5. A low spin head with a higher torque active tip shaft. Kind of an oxymoron combo but it was the best for me during the fitting. 
 

Working with the swing I had today, I was able to get my spin up and minimize the lefts. But, I was still hitting a low spinning left shot more than I’d like. So, I decided to bump the loft up to 12° just for fun. Brought the launch up and my spin numbers were now too high. My head was built with a 3g/18g weight setup with the 18 in the rear trying to bump the spin up during the fitting. I moved the 18g to the front and saw the spin come down into a more reasonable range. But still a little high. 
 

Brought the loft back down to 10.5° (1° higher than where I started) and spin was hitting the low 2k’s. But I started hitting the occasional low spin left shot again once in a while. 
 

All in all, it wasn’t a bad session. I’m impressed with the level of adjustability and how impactful it is on the numbers. As my swing was starting to feel more normal, I’m noticing that the LinQ shaft has the feeling of a lot of movement to it. A lot more than I’m used to at least. It will take some getting used to I think. Ball speeds were impressive and the feel is chefs kiss lol. This driver keeps up with anything else I’ve hit the past few years including the new releases from the big OEMs. Honestly, Wilson didn’t just get close to the others. They’ve met them right where they’re at. 
 

I wasn’t able to grab a whole session of numbers but I took a few pics of the more meaningful shots. 
 

Don’t get me wrong, there were some bad swings in there. I’ll be booking some time on a foresight setup soon and will get some averages to get a better idea how it performs over an average of different shots trying to isolate patterns for the different settings. Right now it’s still the getting to know you phase. 
 

If I can have my way, I want to hit the fade pretty consistently. I do not want to see the ball go left unless I have to. And aside from some really badly timed swings, that’s what I was getting with it. 

 

This is with the initial heavy weight back 9.5° setting. Well struck but as you can see it’s pretty low spin my initial issue.

This all really good info.  Really curious to hear how this “getting to know you” phase progresses over time.

 

I’m incredibly curious about the carbon driver head.  The older I get the more I’m gravitating towards core models.  Also, the fairways look 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼

Thanks for sharing these side by sides - I’m a huge fan of the CBs. As others have probably noted, their finish is quite noticeable (especially compared to the matte blueprints). Curious, in bright sun, do you think they will be distracting in any way?

No, not distracting or glare inducing at all. That's why the toplines are matte finished with the face. I do love that the polished section blends right into the grass, it looks like you're swinging just the face of a club at some angles.

Thanks for sharing these side by sides - I’m a huge fan of the CBs. As others have probably noted, their finish is quite noticeable (especially compared to the matte blueprints). Curious, in bright sun, do you think they will be distracting in any way? 

Since I've only had the one round,  I haven't noticed anything.  I know there are some pros playing the CBs in the stock chrome form - so I'm assuming it's a non issue.

Hand up @BraxtonFullerton and @ColdOkieGolf, I didn’t notice the top line was matte until you said something.  And agreed on the polished section blending nicely with turf. 
 

God I love the look of those CBs - need to hit them STAT.

You really should test them.  This is the third set of staff cb’s I’ve owned.  Twice the previous release due to wrong shafts and finally got my hands on the new ones.  

 

The really nice thing about them, outside of the awesome feel, is they feel like they have a little juice to them.  Although they are “traditionally” lofted by today’s standards, ball speed is really good.
