Also, curious to hear more thoughts on the ZM wedges.  I know we had our testing thread last year, but curious to hear everyone else’s thoughts on them after the Cabot event.

The 54 and 58 are straight in the bag.  The 48* is also good, but iffy right now as it has the spinner shaft which isn't working as well for a full swing club. I have some questions about my lofts and shafts in the CBs,  so not 100% on that gapping with the 48*.

I think the feel and versatility is better in the 54 vs my Ping Glide forged pro raw.

Before I went on the trip, I had mentioned I really like my Ping Tour Gorge 58* ts grind.     The ZM 58* is every bit as good, but with a little added forgiveness in the 10* bounce.   Barring a flop shot from a really tight lie,  it does everything I could ask.  I chipped it really well off the thin/tight bermuda out there.  It'll be even better out here with slightly softer and fluffier conditions.

I really loved them around the greens. They did everything I asked of them and felt like I had complete control. Now, I struggled 60-100 yard shots for whatever reason, which is unlike me, thats been a strength of mine lately,  but don't think its the wedges fault.

One thing of note, is they actually put a lot of thought and testing into the ZM wedge. Harry said they put it through extensive wet ball/condition tests and designed it to excel in those conditions.

UPS dropped off my old clubs, so I can do a head to head.

In the past someone mentioned that Wilson seems come up short on lengths.  For the specs, the Wilson's in stock length should be a quarter to half and inch longer than my Ping S55s.  During the fitting, they were supposed to be bumped an extra .5".   Having the clubs together,  the Wilson's are roughly a quarter inch longer.

Again -  cold garage, swing doesn't feel great,  I'm old, I'm fat.. all the excuses 😄  But I was hitting it a touch better this go round.

Ping PW:  30* launch, 8800 spin, 39 yard peak,  128 carry 133 total

Staff CB:   27.6* launch, 8200 spin, 39 yard peak, 136 carry, 142 total  (lines up with 2* strong)

Ping 7:  21.3* launch, 5900 spin, 38 yard peak,  168 carry, 177 total
Staff CB:  20.3* launch, 6350 spin, 41 yard peak,  177 carry, 186 total

Ping 5:  16.7* launch,  4760 spin, 36 yard peak, 194 carry, 208 total
Staff CB: 15.2* launch, 4230 spin, 35 yard peak, 206 carry, 222 total

On to the woods!

Wilson Carbon 14.5* Denali 70g 6.5. (I wasn't really fit to this as we never really explored fairway woods)

Ball speed: 157,  Launch 12.9,  Spin 2850.  Carry 261 Total 281

Cobra Biocell 3/4 set to 14.5 weird irod 80 gram shaft (I got this on callaway preowned for like 20 bucks)

Ball speed 150.  Launch 13.7, Spin 3115,  Carry 242 Total 261

And now the big one.. driver.     For my ego's sake, I'd like to say when it's warm and I'm farther along in the season my ball speed is more in the mid-high 170s.  But this is a direct apples to apples comparison with my swing as it is right now.   I kept all the shots in to get a good idea on forgiveness and ball speed retention.

Dynapwer LS 8* turned to 7.  Denali Black 60 6.5  (plays make a quarter inch longer than the Ping)

Ball speed 168.3,  Launch 15*,  Spin 2900.  Carry 280  Total 298

Ping G430 LST 9* turned down to 8.  Tour Black 2.0 Xstiff

Ball Speed 166.5, Launch 13*,  Sping 2930, Carry 270 Total 291.

Nice comparison!  Sounds like performance improved across the top of the bag.  Those jumps in iron carry going to present any issues in gapping at the bottom of your bag?

Thanks!

So that's part of the problem I'm getting now.   In my head I was going to do X100s with standard lofts and the Dynapower Forged 4 iron bent 2* weak.   Then keep the 50, 54, 58 wedge set up.

With the X100 Mids being (on paper) higher launching and spinning than the standard X100s and subsequently the lofts bumped 2* strong,  now the Dynapower Forged 4 iron is hitting nearly the same distances as the 7 wood.    I went to the 48* wedge instead of the 50* to try and cover the bottom bag gap a bit better - but with the spinner shaft I'm getting a bit too much launch and spin there.

So, from 48 to the 54?  Does the 54 carry like it would gap if you were able to get a little more carry out of the 48?

Yep yep.

So far it seems to work out.   We went to a slightly longer shaft length in the wedges as well.   I feel really comfortable hitting a little trap draw to cover a little more yardage if I need out of the 54, or doing a little 3/4 with the 48*.

So, just need to get something a little more substantial in that 48 and you'll be in business then.

They are darn solid!  Granted, things can change once golf season is back in full swing - but right now I honestly have no issues rocking with Wilson from top to bottom.

Yes sir.   With my indoor swing I tend hang back and flip,  and I think that carried over a bit to hitting outside for the first time in a few months.

The AI fit had the DG Mids as the top recommendation - but launch and spin was too high.  2* strong in the CBs brought the numbers into a good place.  I would have liked to explore some different shaft options,  maybe standard or 1* strong - but that's really my fault.

Interesting that the CB 7 then is only 1° stronger than the S55 and you’re getting 9 more yards of carry AND an extra 450rpm of spin. Great combo!

Great call!  I legit didn't think about that. Since they gap differently,   the Wilson CBs are only 1* stronger than the S55s in the 7,8,9 but the Wilson CB 5 is the same loft as the Ping 4.

That would explain why I hit it like 20 yards over the green on one of the par 3s at Cabot 😆.

Staff CB 9 iron vs 223

pretty similar other than finish.  Perhaps the Staff has slightly smaller bladelength.

Dynapwr forged 7 iron and 4 iron vs 223, Again not a lot in it, Dynapwr slightly thicker soles and toplines. Long irons maybe a smidge more offset.

Not apples to apples because its not a fli-hi but the Staff RB 3 iron vs 225 3 iron:

I wish I could give you more feedback but I have yet to hit it.  On that note, I have a hybrid/wood fitting tomorrow with Club Champion to find a replacement for my current TSi3 3-hybrid.  I'm going to bring my gamer and the new DYNAPWR 2-hybird and 5-wood so I should have plenty of data to share shortly.

Thanks for that…. I typically play the TS3 19° and 23°. Tried the TSi and TSR and kept coming back to the TS3.  It’s a tried phrase here at wrx but they’re the most point and shoot clubs I’ve ever played.  Although the 3+ 13.5° from Wilson is about as straight

I wrote about it here in response to questions about the DYNAPWR Carbon 5-wood. Ever since I got the T-150 irons my TSi3 3-hybrid has been rendered obsolete as my T-150 4-iron produces the same ball speed and carry. My gut, combined with exactly one on-course swing, tells me the DYNAPWR Carbon 5-wood may be too long for what I'm looking for. We tried the Staff Model RB Utility 2-iron and got a similar carry as my T-150 4-iron.  That would leave the DYNAPWR 2-hybrid as the only remaining option from Wilson Golf to fill the void.

I'll follow back after my fitting with the results and Trackman data for my DYNAPWR Carbon 5-wood and DYNAPWR 2-hybrid

You’re very likely to be a younger stronger player than I am but for me the hybrids height and carry is much better than long irons.  And I’ve never been much of a fan of lofted fairway woods like 4,5, and 7 woods.

@Red4282 made a good point. I didn’t realize until he mentioned it. But the metal portion of the crown is glossy compared to the other woods.

Also to note, the 3w and 7w shapes look to be completely different to me.
