Moving on from Hogan PTxPro -- help me find my next set of irons

I am moving on from my PTxPro's with Recoil F4 shafts, I have gotten along great with these the last 5 years or so, but I'm ready to try something new.  Not looking to break the bank, and still want some forgiveness, prior to these Hogan's I games Diablo Forged for long time, and got along really well with those as well.  Most likely going used nice condition or maybe new if headed to Takomo or new MacGregor's etc. 

 

I had historically played S300's but did enjoy the recoil 110's that were in the hogans, and I also get along with the modus 120 in my titleist t-mb 2 iron.

PTX Pro are very nice irons and somewhat tech-y, with different constructions as you move from long to mid to short irons. They are fully hollow in the long irons and their lofts are not very strong. Heads are compact, v-sole is nice. To me they are very much a players iron. A few hollow heads to help the long end of the game but still a compact iron that demands above-average ball striking. How much blade length is a factor to you will be something to consider. Most you see will have a longer blade, from slightly to a lot. 
 

Mizuno 223/243 will be kind of similar in being a combo-in-one set. For size and performance, in addition to those above, I would add PXG 0317T, Srixon Zxi5, TaylorMade p770, Callaway AI200 or Apex Pro, perhaps the Mizuno JPX925 Forged. All of those will be longer and on mishits are more forgiving than the PTX Pro.

Great feedback dmeeks, yeah I used to game 990B Titleist MB's for years and these ptx felt like a more forgiving profile of those.  They are def smaller than the Diablo forged but required me to focus more and I enjoyed them.  I'll research more on your recommendations.

Mizuno JPX 923 or 925 forged.  Great feel with quite a bit more forgiveness.

I moved on from the PTx Pros to the ZX7 model iron.  The adjustment didn't take long with turf interaction and distances were the same once I bent the lofts to where I like them.  You could mix in the ZX5 in the long irons if you wanted to as well.

You really can't go wrong with any of those Honma offerings if you don't want to break the bank. They have a very healthy variety of iron sets that all play phenomenal. Since you seem to keep your iron sets until the plating comes off the faces, I would seek that brand out first. Keep your wallet from combusting

Used set of Apex '21. The natural evolution of the Diablo Forged, lots of free shaft options so there will be a variety on the used market.

I have been experimenting with a set of Honma 757vx irons. I built them 1/2” long and play the 5 iron as my 4 iron as the lofts are strong, see below. I have only 2 rounds outside and 5-10 rounds in the simulator. The irons feel great and play true to their loft. Sole grind is nice but need more time outside to better understand turf interaction. Cannot comment on forgiveness at this time but I would guess they are less forgiving than some of the other irons mentioned in this thread as they are a solid forged club with a little tungsten in the toe. They perform similar to my Wilson Staff CB irons, well balanced, great feel, good control, consistent spin. Blade length is just a little longer than my Wilson CB irons but top line is thinner which I like. Overall a very nice set of CB irons.

Thanks for the feedback all, I did eye some Apex 21's in combo form with pro for the 8-P which look nice, and I saw a killer deal on a nice 757Vx combo that I'm waiting to see how they go.  Appreciate the feedback all, the hunt is generally just as fun as picking a winner 🙂

So I just snagged a pretty mint set 5-p of Ping i59's to try.  Looks like an interesting set to try with some forgiveness.  I like the looks and will report back when I get to put them through their paces.  Golf is not happening in NY for awhile.

So I got to hit the i59's into my net a bit this weekend.  They feel pretty good, I like the looks, not too distant from the Hogan's but they definitely feel a little harsher. It's possible some of that is from the steel 6.0 LZ shafts compared to the recoils in the hogans.  I can't really gauge performance yet, as I don't have a sim etc.  Overall they feel decent, but I do wonder if these shafts are going to just feel a tad worse.

And the i59' aren't going to stay, I don't like the feel of them at all.  I ended up picking up a mint set of Srixon 785's with the recoil 110 shafts, as i know I like them.  i59's headed to classifieds 🙂

I can tell you are not afraid to try some brands that are not mainstream. Wilson makes some great irons and the Staff Model CB's are in the same category as your Hogan's and 785s. Give them a shot if the Srixons don't work out.

Thanks Bridges, I did eye some of those.  Hit the 785s into the net and they feel so much better than the pings.  I plan on at least taking these to the course once we open up play here in NY.
