Ventus Blue 5S vs Ventus Black 5S

During my fitting I was going back and forth between these two since my metrics were kind of right between both so hoping for some advice on which might be the best one to go with.

 

I am currently playing a Titleist M5 with a Fujikura Atmos Orange 5S. Its a very light shaft (55g) and has a pretty high torque (5.1). I have always struggled with consistency and a very high spin rate (3200+) so moving to a Ventus Blue or Black should help a lot. My natural shot shape was a draw but would struggle a lot with hooks and I think the shaft played a part in that.

 

I use the Ventus Blue 5S on my woods and I really like the launch and spin but with the driver I wanted something even lower launch and lower spin. My swing speed is between 105 and 110 depending on how I am feeling but I had read that the Ventus Black is for swing speeds closer to 115. Is this accurate?

 

Can anyone offer some insight or advice? Thank you.

Played both in 6S. The black felt stiffer and was 300ish rpm less spin and a degree lower launch. Honestly could play either but I have blue in 3/5/4hy so just matched the driver as well. 
 

The biggest issue I had with the black vs blue was mis hits were more punishing with the black.

Maybe try the Blue TR.  It's been a sweet spot shaft for me with a 100ss.  Spin is definitely on the low side.  I played a Blue 6s previously and much prefer the Blue TR 5s.  Doesn't play light to me (no extra head weight required) and I'm never threatening to overpower it.

Awesome, thanks. I did ask my fitter if he has these and he does so I am going to go back and try it out.

I’m in a similar swing speed, 104-108. I’ve tried the Ventus OG Blue, TR Blue, and Blue plus, all in 5S. They seem fine on smooth swings up to about 105, but when I swing faster, I can lose it left.

 

i thought I’d be a baller and go with a TR Black 5S. It’s a completely different feel. Very linear, like swinging a piece of iron. Have to really work to get the club head through the zone. 
 

I have a Blue plus 5X on the way. Hoping it’s the one.

Thanks for the insight. Its tough when I feel I am right between the two and have only tested them out on a simulator and not outside. I think I am going to try the black 5S first, just because my launch and spin are both quite high right now.

You can definitely use black (5s) even at lower swing speeds than yours.  Additional important variables are your swing tempo, shot pattern, height and driver spin.  The last three variables can be discerned on the monitor.

some examples:

if you are fast tempo swinging hard at the ball but battle a hook, that would favor black obviously.  If you are a smooth fader, that would obviously favor blue.
If you have too much of a low spinning, knuckleball with Black, you may be losing distance as compared to blue.

 

At the end of the day would go with what feels best to your hands n brain.  Tr blue obviously a great suggestion too.

I do have a fast tempo and battle a hook. When I am hitting well its usually a high draw. My current shaft is just a stock Atmos Orange 5S which is definitely not right for me.

 

Was at the range yesterday and I averaged a height of 135 ft on my driver which coupled with a spin over 3000 and its just a recipe for disaster and accuracy really takes a hit.

 

I appreciate the insight! I am not familiar with the TR version so will have to do some research if the Black 5S doesn't work for me.

I've also tried a bunch of the Blues in 5S and 6S. I feel the same way with the blue as you do — the mid section just below the handle is a bit too soft when going faster/harder at a drive and I can lose it left. How is the Blue plus 5X working out?

Blue Plus 5X has worked out pretty well. I immediately noticed some drop in spin, which I think was from hitting the center a little more. In other words, I didn’t seem to be fighting the shaft. The main issue is that I haven’t been able to swing as fast the past couple months due to a shoulder injury. When I first got the shaft, I could get to 105-106, but now I’m more in the 102-103 range. 
 

Still it’s a great shaft. Seems to give me enough club head awareness so that I know whether I left my hands open or snapped them shut. And I can still handle the shaft late in the round. So I looking forward to the summer season.

I have gone to a Ventus TR Blue on the 5S and have fallen in love with it with a 1/2” tip trim 

 

thinking of going to try a 1” tip trim in the Ventus Blue TR 5S

 

dont like the 6 weight shafts so never had the chance for a 5-X

 

maybe the blue plus in 5-X might be worth a shot?

 

anyone hit the TR blue and Blue plus?

 

are the feels different?
