what if i cut a broken graphite tapered tip shaft and take it for a shorter .370 iron head?

Hi there.

 

I have a simple question: I have a shaft pull, that went wrong and now I would like to ask if this shaft can be used as a shaft for a shorter iron. it is a Recoil 95 F4 shaft. the shaft was assembled with a 3iron head. 

The tip size was tapered, if i cut the toasted area the shaft will be .370.

the toasted tip area is about 1inch long. so in theory a 5iron would fit the new length. the tip area will become stiffer but the shorter iron head is heavier.

 

I simply want to make sure that there is no opportunity to use this shaft anymore before I use it for my wifes greenhouse to support the plants.

I won't say it can't be done - but I wouldn't recommend it when you've lost more than 1/2" of the tip.

 

There are two possible concerns.

 

1) Any time there is damage to graphite shafts during the pull - the damage can easily go much  deeper or further along the shaft than just based on what you can actually see.   So you can't really be sure you completely removed all of the damaged section.

 

2) All graphite shafts have a reinforced tip section to add strength to manage the high stresses at the top of the hossel.  In most parallel tip iron shafts, this section can be 5" long or more to allow tipping (or 3" for driver/wood shafts).  For a taper tip shaft that's not designed to be tipped, that reinforced section will be much shorter, maybe only 2".   Although it's hard to say exactly how long (without dissecting the shaft) since that information is never published.    So by loosing a full inch, there is a high risk that the shaft at the top of the hossel will no longer be reinforced to handle the high stresses there.

 

Now that doesn't mean it there is a 100% chance it will break when used if you go forward - but the risk is going to be much higher that it could break if there is no more reinforcement at the top of the hossel.

 

I can never hurt to check with UST CS to see what they have to say.   Most shaft companies will say 1/2" of tipping usually isn't a problem but I've not run across any who have said more than that is OK.   But that doesn't mean they might not be out there.
