7 Wood

I have a stealth 7W and it is money.  41.5 inches with an Diamana D Limited 80.  I hit it so well, I dropped my 5 wood.  I actually I have to get the loft checked on it, because there is no way it is 21.  I was hitting it warming up for a lesson and it was carrying 230 on trackman.  Mu guess it is the same loft as my 5W.

the thing with 7 woods is the stock shaft offerings don't suit high swing speed players. highest weight is usually 75g, you have to get an upcharge shaft.

Not a bad idea to get a shaft you know works for you and just swap out the heads. If I upgrade my woods, I’ll just swap out the heads. The shafts I’ll keep until something major in my swing changes.

Diamana BBs for me are so great on FWs. Just draw bag and sling em down the fairway.

Anybody play a 7 wood and 4 iron? Have an about 30 yard gap between 7w and 5i. Play zx7 5i at 25*

I do. Depending on course conditions, they can end up at fairly similar total yardage distances for me, but get there in very different ways. The 4 iron has a much flatter trajectory. Better in the wind, off the tee, or for running something up/out. The 7w is great for attacking greens and better out of the rough/downsloping lies.

7w at 19-20* and 4i at 24*

If you don’t feel great about the 4i, maybe consider a hybrid in that space, as well.

I just got the zx5 at 22* flies I assume 10-15 yards less. Gonna test out tomorrow

I had used an Epic Flash 7 wood several years ago, traditional 7 wood setup, and never loved it. Threw it in the garage. This past winter, rummaging around through my shafts , I found I had a Steelfiber fc75 hybrid shaft from an Epic Super Hybrid or something like that. Wouldn't you know, it has been awesome in the Epic Flash 7 wood.

At least in LH, there are not many adjustable 7 woods. The Epic Flash is great in that it is not only adjustable in terms of swapping out shafts, adjusting loft and lie, etc., but it has a sole weight that makes it easy to adjust swing weight as well.

This has been the combo I have been looking for in that slot after the 3 wood for some time. Solid off the tee on short par 4s or long par 3s, and great off the deck. Shorter shaft (from the hybrid), so very playable. These Steelfiber fc75 shafts are plentiful out there from previous Callaway Super Hybrids (Epic and the like), so if you have an Epic Flash 7 wood head sitting around, easy enough to experiment. YMMV.

I just ordered a 5h too. The top of my bag will be driver-4w-7w-4h-5h once it arrives.

What’s your average carry with 7W and 4H? For me those would be nearly identical.

14 hours ago, Triple said:

It’s closer than I’d like—about 205 vs 195—but they give me different trajectories.

That's why I didnt do a 4H, it would be too close or pretty much the same distance as the 7w. The 7w even creeps up on the 5w sometimes in distance

Hoping I've made a solid blind choice here switching from my qi10 core 7 wood (that sat very neutral and flat...) to a G430 7 wood.

The qi was a rocket launcher for me and my very average 105 driver SS I'd see 220ish off the tee and typically 200-210 off the deck, but, the deeper face of the qi meant I really had to consciously dig into the turf a bit more than I typically do with woods to get contact higher up the face, so I did have many thin strikes that would still go nuclear distance but not really provide the nice floaty 7 wood flight and stopping power I was looking for and it really got in my head lol. Hoping the shallower profile of the ping fits me a little better! I did quite like an old G430 5wd I had so I'm hopeful, it arrives tomorrow.

I run a 17.25° 5W a 21° 7W and a 24° 5H. They’re probably my most used clubs but sometimes I wonder if they’re all a bit close in distance. I’m probably 190, 180, 170. But the reality is they all get me in a pretty similar neighborhood. Still, I’m so much more consistent with those three than anything else.

I use the 7w the most followed by the 5H and depending on how bad I get off the tee determines how much the 5w gets used, lol

True. But I’m much more confident with the woods on the tee, and much more confident with the hybrids in the rough. I like the versatility.

With my average drive 255, there’s bound to be grouping at the top anyway.

Just to update, gamble paid off, G430 7 wood with tour chrome 2.0 stiff is absolute money vs my (technique) struggles with the qi10

I have never really been a lofted fairway wood player but I have tested a few 7 woods in recent years solely for the purpose of playing specific long courses and without doubt the Wilson Dynapwr carbon is the best I have ever hit, it would be my top choice for a lofted fairway wood for high approach shots into long par 5s and maybe off the tee on 240+ yards par 3s, in addition to its exceptional performance it also looks amazing at address.

Despite initially regretting buying my AI Smoke Max 7 wood it has fast become my most reliable club in the bag.

Used it today on a short par 4 and hit the best tee shot I've ever hit on that hole, wind was behind so I figured I'll get some extra carry and be just short of the green. Absolutely pured it and it was beautiful to watch. Can't see the green but was thrilled to walk up and see it close to the pin, holed it for my first 2 in ages on that hole!

So glad I bought this club.

This is a great shot!

But I’m curious about this course and this hole. It seems designed that you have to hit over the fairway of another hole?

Thanks!

So shotscope doesn't really give context for how the ball rolled out etc.

In reality the line is on varying degrees of the blue line, slightly below for the tiger line and slightly up for more safety. The hole goes uphill a lot the more right you go, if you hit the blue line and land it at the end of the line then you can catch some slope for the ball to bounce towards the green. If you cannot get to the downward slope then the tee shot here is quite tough as you have to carry a high ditch for the water which runs all along the lower tree line. It's easier to get it wrong than get on the green. That's why I'm so pleased with my shot, it's a fairly rare occurrence to be on!

You are right though, it's quite common for the ball to end up left on the previous fairway but it's not an easy shot to the green as the trees are big.

You guys talked me into it.  Callaway AI Smoke Max 7 wood arrived yesterday.  Was insane hard to find with the heavier shaft. Headed to the range tonight to see how the gapping works and what club it will replace.  My 3hy One Length has been a bit short on the distance I want out of it so I'm hoping this can replace that with some extra yardage.

Here's my gapping chart for top end of my bag. The G440 7 wood at 41.5 length and 19.5 loft is very versatile compared to my 5 wood, plus easier to hit.
