7 Wood

I need a good cheap 7wood to experiment with.  I do not love my king tech 4 hybrid.  I do love my ping G425 3 hybrid.

Thought about ordering a Maltby 7 wood to try.

Recently put a 7 wood in the bag. 80 gram stiff Kaili white shaft D3 swing weight but feels heavy in the hands and can’t groove it. Topped a few in my first round…. I love the kaili white in my 3 wood - used to be my worst club now very reliable…high and straight nearly every time.

What shaft are you guys playing in your 7 wood?

Ventus+ Red 7s has been money in my 7w. For my swing it hits the right launch window and provides enough spin to reasonably stop where needed.

Ping G400 7W in the bag with a chrome ping tour 2.0 75X shaft (at a little less than 5W length).

A g430 LST with a chrome ping tour 2.0 at 3 wood length but turned up to 4 wood loft is my other fairway and I mainly use it off the tee when I want to hit a draw (still is a monster distance wise even with the loft up) or need more control. Can use it from the fairway but generally don’t unless I really wanna make a play at a very long par 5.

this set up tends to give me just a tiny bit more distance from my 7W, but I can take a little pace off too

I was fit to GT2 7w but I’ve remained skeptical so I did what almost never works out and ordered a G440 7w with Tour Black.  The shaft at least matches my 3w.  Still waiting on delivery.

Kinda hard to not hit Ping woods well. Only thing is sometimes I hit them a little high on the face.

What shaft weight have you found the best success with your 7w?

I initially tried my GT2 with a 70g but it really came alive when I switched to 80g. I first tried all my woods with the same 70-75g shaft weights, and have used that for a year. After trying the 80g in the 7w, my setup has shifted to the approximate plus 5-10g per inch of club length lost.

Mini 43.5" and 3w 43" 70g

5w 42.25" 75g

7w 41.5" 85g

Here's my gapping chart for top end of my bag. The G440 7 wood at 41.5 length and 19.5 loft is very versatile compared to my 5 wood, plus easier to hit.

What is the loft of your five wood? I have a 19° five wood, but I see that some people consider this is seven wood. I have the same gap between my three wood and 19° wood of in-determinant name (except my 3+ wood is 13 deg). Also, what is the length in shaft differentiation between your seven wood and your four hybrid? I just purchased a 24° "5" Hybrid Elyte and I added 0.75 inch custom order which I'm starring to think might be too much and will put it at too close to a gap to my 19° wood.

18° 5 wood 42", it carried about 220.

My "7" wood is 19.5° 41.5", so it's more like a 6 wood, it doesn't roll out as far as the 5 wood so it's nice to attack the green with it.

4 hybrid is stock length Ping, it should be about 39.75". Iirc that spec is usually a 5 hybrid for other brands.

Gapping has been perfect so far.

Interesting what you say about the Ping 4 hybrid. I had both the G430 4 and 5 hybrid, but sold the 5 hybrid, because my Srixon ZX5 5-iron was just as long, but more useful for trouble shots (knockdowns, punch outs, etc.).  My 4 hybrid gaps well between my G425 7-wood and 5-iron; and is also good for short and tight par 4s, or safe layups on par 5s.

Yeah I'm in between my 4 iron and 4 hybrid as well, just different flight and carry but almost similar total distance. I heard that Ping numbers their hybrids to the iron they're supposed to replace.

The 4 hybrid is easier to hit, but there's no better feeling than puring a 4 iron.

Bagging a Qi35 w Ventus red + 80.

Best club in my bag right now and replaced a Srixon 3 iron that was also a great club but was harder to sling into the air and harder to hit off the deck and out of the rough vs off the tee. Found myself catching it high on the face a lot in high grass.

7 wood is just incredible easy to hit and misses are very small because it just sits down when off target. 3 iron would blast all over the place when off target.
