Best Club Fitter? Miles of Golf or Carls?

Gents,

 

I am considering getting some new irons and was curious who people would suggest for an individual for the best club fitter at either of these locations.  If you have a preference let me know and also include who you think is the best of the best

Carl's fitters work on commission.  Miles of Golf do not.  My son uses Nate Lammers at Miles in A2 for irons and wedges. He's been happy with his experiences there.

Ive heard Nate is fantastic, my guy moved to the Kendell Academy after 15 years of fitting me and I don't know what to do now lol. I am sure the Carls guys are very good, but I like that Miles doesn't work on commission. I've always loved won't sell you on up charge shafts if there is very little difference from stock.

Shawn? He was super knowledgeable equipment wise. Saw that he moved to KA. 
 

I’ve only used Miles and have been a Miles loyalist for the last 10+ years. Ken and Nate are both very solid. The guy I have worked with the past 6 years left recently. I won’t hesitate to work with one of the above moving forward.

Yeah Shawn started fitting me in 2010 with the Titleist 910. He was so good and just felt he did things the right way for his customers. I will for sure stick with Miles just not sure who I will go to.

I went to Miles of Golf last night and pulled the trigger on the Ping G730's.  The fitting experience we not that great and if/when I buy irons again I will probably go to Carls.  I have heard amazing things of Miles of Golf and I think I probably got unlucky with a bad fitter who did not really care.  I had heard that NATE was an amazing fitter and the guy to get but when I called he was not available so I had to go in blind.  The guy I got paired with has only been there 2 years.  With that being said let me start with the positives of miles

 

Hitting bays were outstanding with all the technology one could want and they have a ton of options for equipment with a lot of shaft options.  The store, setup, technology is all one could ask for so kudos to Miles for that.

 

The bad experience started with the fitter......

Sadly, I got paired with a really bad fitter and i think I just got unlucky because I have heard amazing things about the place.  The guy was lazy, did not give me many options and I felt like I was being a pain when I asked for different options as he did not want to try different setups.  The fitting was supposed to last 1 hour for my irons and after about 15-20 minutes I was getting the feeling he wanted to wrap things up and not continue to try different setups with shafts etc.  I did end up buying the irons but it felt rushed from the start.  There were alot of other fitters working with other people and it appeared to me they were getting first class treatment so I would assume I got the dud in the bunch of fitters.

 

The same fitter overcharged me 😞  I ended up going with the Ping G730's even though I was not all that impressed with the fitting but I currently dont have irons and need them for a golf trip in a month.  If these irons dont work I will bite the bullet and get refit for another setup someplace else.

The nail in the coffin was they charged me $250 more for my irons than they were supposed to.  I had been pricing my Ping G730's for a few weeks and they were going for $170 a club at Dicks and other large stores.  Miles of Golf tried to charged me $200 a club.  After realizing this I called back the shop (to their credit they refunded me the difference) but never apologized or anything and I got the feeling they were trying to make some extra money off me.  

 

So bottom line is the setup of miles is really good and if you get paired with the right fitter you are probably golden.  Sadly, I was paired with someone who did not care and next time I will probably give Carl's a call.  When you spend $1700 you want to feel like you are taken care of and I did not get that feeling 😞

Ryan Johnson at Carl's. Has never made a difference to my fittings if he was on commission or not. I've bought the clubs I was fit for, and I haven't bought the clubs and I have never had anything but a first-class experience with Ryan. Super knowledgeable, very detailed, and I've never once been pressured into a purchase. In fact, he's told me that I can buy something but based on numbers it doesn't appear to make a difference. Can't speak for the other fitters there, but Ryan is awesome to deal with.

Update - I called Miles of golf and explained that I was not happy.  To their credit they offered me to comeback for a free upgraded fitting with Nate to ensure that I was fit right and get the attention and service that I am looking for.

 

I will be going back up there on Friday and I give credit to Miles of Golf for handling this right and making sure that I am a happy customer.  Assuming this goes well on Friday they have earned my business back which is a good investment for them 🙂

I was going to suggest you do just that. I don't like to be a Karen, but Miles of Golf has a longstanding reputation and I doubt the management would be okay with your experience.

You're in a great position to have both options within reasonable proximity. When I lived in Ann Arbor, I made the drive out to Carl's despite Miles being much closer, but I'd gladly trade either for what is readily available in the Chicago area.

Update - I finally got back up to Miles of Golf last night to get refit with Nate Lammers which is who I have heard is the best fitter at Miles.  Nate was awesome and he totally exceeded my expectations and did an amazing job.  First off he was excellent at building new clubs for me to try with different shafts flexes etc.  He gave me a ton of options which is what I wanted.  He also was great at explaining the metrics on each strike about the performance of each setup I was hitting.  

 

When I go back to Miles of Golf I will def use Nate again as he is first class, cares about his job and gave me the ultimate fitting experience.

Good to hear. Nate has fit me for clubs quite a few times over the years. I have always been happy with the results.

I would wager that first "fitter" is no longer available there.  They've been first rate in all my dealing with them.  I've ordered clubs, used their range and my son only uses them for new stuff.  You know it's a bad sign when they call you by your first name walking in the door like an episode of Cheers.  😃

Which clubs did you get fit for a second time?

Nate and I tried a lot of different models and they all felt pretty good but I ended up staying with the Ping G730's.  He suggested a few different shafts for me to try compared to my previous fitting and I ended up changing the shafts on my order.  But don't hesitate to go to Miles as they have earned my business and made me a life long customer for making this situation right.  I appreciate the professionalism of Miles of Golf as they wanted to ensure I was satisfied.

I def understand wanting to know who he is but I just don't wanna bash anyone online as I don't think that is fair.  If I were in your shoes I would want to know but I just don't want to do it on an online forum.  Nate was simply an outstanding fitter so if you want someone who has been at Miles of golf over 15 years then he is your guy.  I am pretty picky and he far exceeded my expectations and took his time, explained all the data and options I had and was very informative and knew what he was talking about.

 

I talked to a few people prior to meeting with Nate and the management and team at Miles of golf made it right and did not even charge me for an upgraded fitting.  They wanted to make sure I was totally happy and were willing to do whatever was needed to earn my business.  As stated before they will be my fitter for as long as I live as they made the situation right
