What’s your height and what’s your swing speed?

You could walk away with the super senior long driver title if you can hit 190 ball speed at 60.

Between this and the deadlifts you could be setting some world records!

Dude... If you are trying to make my head spin.   It is working..lol
Is there a super senior LD title? I have started looking into it this LD stuff this past couple months and it is interesting.
Been following Fast Eddie(the perfect LD swing IMO) and will hope to get better synchronized through his forthcoming program.
The Deadlift stuff?  I have no desire to go that  WR route-lower back hurts for a couple days( on heavy days) after but it's fun watching all the 20/30/40 yr olds at crossfit look at me funny.
don't want to accidentally hurt my golf swing.

Unfortunately lack of height with some swing speed is my thing 😄.

5'5" without shoes, get up to 122 mph, live in the high teens.  Definitely not without swing issues as I lose posture upon pushing up and away from the ground when going after it.  But generally I try to keep relatively strong, mobile, and quick (link) to keep things going.  Apparently there's a long driver this short going 140s, so it's possible to generate pretty high speed even shorter than Rory, JT, Rickie...

Na, there's more to it then that. I'm 6' 3" at a whooping 87mph. But I'm 69 years old.  Age has a lot more to do with it then height.  It more about fast and slow twitch muscles. Those will limit you more then height.

I am with you on this Sir. I'm 6'4" and weigh 215.....swing speed in Max 105 but in normal swing speed where I can keep it on the planet is around 100..... BUT.... I'm 57 and aging rapidly!!!

5 foot 8, 170 lbs, 47 y/o, up to 122mph. It depends on how deeply I load my trailing hip. It's been bumping up by about 5mph since I started playing again again during COVID. The main thing is I hit a lot of fairways now.

I could probably get a bit higher if I decided to do dedicated drills, but I ride my bicycle a fair amount and that certainly helps.

My 1 rep maxes on deadlift are 650, incline press 330 plus 2x a week and squat 550 1or 2x a month. Swing speed has zero to do with that. Ive said this 100x on forums, faster speed for 99 percent of golfers is a result of better sequencing, im stronger than everyone on tour, by far, and i suck at golf, why ? Bc sequencing

So true: I've been picking up speed for years due to better sequencing: loading and driving properly due to improved flexibility and balance. I haven't lifted a weight in 20 years. And if you are going to work on something, focus on your legs and glutes. When I'm swinging well, it almost feels like my glutes are turning me, like a hula hoop, and my torso is just along for the ride.

Not that I couldn't pick up speed in the gym, but that's not where the big gains are unless you already have an elite swing

I'm 5'9", age 71. On my SLX Hybrid Mini the fastest swing speed I've achieved yet is 71mph with a 7-iron, generally averaging 55 to 60mph. I've never tried to see what my swing speed is with my driver, simply because my living room is too small for me to swing a driver all out. I don't imagine it's all that fast.

Doing practice swings at home I feel like I can swing 15-20 MPH faster than when hitting a ball. Only issue is when I watch it on video, the club face is wide open in the practice swings. And then when I get over the ball and it’s time to square the face up, I can’t get anywhere close to my speed potential. Anyone else deal with this issue?

Practice more swinging as fast as you can hitting the ball,  don’t worry about where the ball goes.

6'9, 235lbs, 52yo - fastest SS is 118mph, but trying to get consistent w/ cruising around 112mph.  I know there's more speed in me as I get better w/ sequencing and understanding how to use my physical height/length to my advantage.  It's been fun to see speeds inch up over the past 9 months as I've come back into the game.

As a 5'11" fat guy I'm not sure how I'm supposed to take this 🤣

Got up to 107 the other day. Hadn't clocked it before that for a few years since I've had a bum shoulder and I really just focus on irons. Starting to work more on driver now and thinking about seeing what would happen if I attempted a little speed training.

Sharing a read and video that go into some discussion of the kind of motion the swing falls into and the exercises that would tend to benefit what we're trying to achieve in the golf swing regarding speed. Efficiency of the swing does play into it as already pointed out, but so does the type of training being done by the player. Gives some more detailed insight around why things like jumps, medicine ball throws, and other explosive movements tend to produce great results and why simply getting as big as possible isn't it for what we're after.

https://thesportsedu.com/power-in-sports/

For reference and context to the video, via TPI:

  • A fast swing is 750ms back and 250ms down; a slow swing is 900ms back and 300ms down; (where ms means milliseconds).

A player with an efficient swing who does the kind of training that's common for pros these days is going to tend to have the better outcomes. Height helps, but it's not everything given what players like Rory, JT, Padraig, Spaun, and others have done/do. Lots of muscle mass isn't it either, as evidenced by the prior list and guys like Åberg, Finau, Bhatia, Min Woo, and others.

Not seeing too many World Strongmen regulars or Guinness height record holders at the top of the driving charts.

Maybe 5% at most. Rory for example had to train hard to build his speed. Watch enough of those speed videos from teachers like Dr. Kwon and Dana and they will tell u good set up, sequencing, vertical force, etc. are things u can train. U can get a 60 year old man to swing 110 but the question is is it usable on the course? Probably not.

This is so ignorant.

You can get a self selected sample of some 60 year-old men to swing 110. Stop with this nonsense.

I think a better way to look at it is almost every body is capable of a percentage of improvement relative to where they started rather than a everybody could hit xxxx number if they trained

This...

You can see this as early as grade school and little league sports.

Some of us are gifted with better hand\ eye coordination, fast twitch muscle and balance. Sure, training can improve your numbers but elite athletic endeavors like hitting a golf ball and keeping it in the fairway way down there, you're not doing that without the genetic advantage to state with, usually.

Going to have to look around more, but from the detailed studies I could find the consensus was the genetic component needs more evaluation. Some said it accounts for 30-80% of athletic performance where others said the presence or lack of ACTN3, the gene responsible for the most efficient production of a main protein in fast twitch muscle fibers, only accounts for about a 3% difference in athletic performance. Another study identified at least 57 genetic variants associated with muscle size and development. In another study less than 20% of those in the cohort, made up entirely of athletes, had muscle composition that was most heavily Type-I fiber, which as mentioned earlier is believed to be more important for explosive movements as well as endurance.

Those kind of findings suggest genetics are simply the difference in more readily hitting the heights for performance, not an indicator of a low ceiling for average participants in any sport.

There are some easy to eyeball players who are nowhere near having struck the genetic lottery on any front yet the achieve 115+ CHS with little issue after training, with many exceeding it. That's anecdotal I'll admit, but I've yet to run into anyone with a sound swing who actually maintains their fitness and does a proper training program for better speed and doesn't see worthwhile results.

Agree with this, sure there is a genetic component.

Are most people near their individual genetic ceiling for swing speed absolutely not

there are many things they can do to increase it (sequencing, ground force, strength training) before their genetics become the limitation.
