Ping G730 vs. Ping G710

Recommended Posts

Gents,

I am currently playing the Ping G710 irons and I love them.  They are the farthest Ping iron I have ever hit and they are so forgiving.  I started to do some research and now Ping claims that the G730 irons are their furthest and most forgiving iron to hit.  I looked a the specs and the new ping g730 irons have stronger lofts so I have no doubt they will go further.

I am seriously considering making the jump and just buying the 7 iron on up and play hybrids and woods for my longer yardages.  Can anyone give any insight about the Ping G730 irons and how they like them.  If anyone has played the Ping G710 I would love to hear how they compare.

I had the G700 and the G710 and moved to the i5XX series after the 710 vs. moving to the 730.  For ME, the i5 series were just that little bit smaller to help with rough interaction.  I didn't find any loss of forgiveness moving away from the G7XX to the i5XX.  I have since moved on from them to PXG but could easily go back to the i530's if they offered the same shaft options as PXG without upcharge.  I also thought the i5XX sounded better than the 730's.  the 730's were quite clicky to my ear, but this is very subjective.

What are you trying to accomplish with the 730's that the 710's don't do for you now?  Or is it the lure of shiny and new?  (this is what gets me every year!).

I game the G700s and tested and got fit for the G730s.

I like long blade widths, and the G730 is noticeably shorter.  There isn't much difference between the G730 and G440 at the address.  I wish Ping offered GMAX or G700 iron blade length again.  They are moving toward a more players iron; thinner topline, shorter blade length etc.

I'm a four-handicap, but I enjoy the confidence provided by a long blade length.  The Cleveland Zipcore XLs  looked perfect (long blade, less offset), but I couldn't get over the clicky feel.

TLDR: I will play the G700s for a bit longer until something catches my eye, literally.  It also helps that I had the same irons in the bag for 7 years; I know how far and high each number goes.  There's something to be said about understanding your clubs so well that your mind is at ease on every shot.  I could never comprehend how golfers switch out their irons every year and expect their scores to go down because of it.  To each their own.

17-4 face - same as i59 - 730 definitely has a distinct sound/feel using 17-4

Guess that's a reason the 730 outperformed 430 in my testing...i530 were also a solid performer, just absolutely hated the mishit

I have recently replaced my G710s with G730s. One reason for making this change, unrelated to the club head itself, is that my swing speed has slowed some since I was fitted for the G710s 5-years ago and I felt it was probably time to make the move to senior flex shafts in my irons as I had done in the long end of the bag.

As a caveat, it has been a cold, windy winter in New England this year, so I have not actually played with the G730s yet, but only used them on the range and two Trackman sessions. Having said that, so far I like the G730s better than the G710s. For me they are more forgiving (easier to hit), about a half club longer (carry) and more consistent from a dispersion standpoint. Not only doesn't the shorter blade length bother me, I prefer the look at address. BTW, I was fitted for the Alta Quick 45 shaft, vs the Recoil 80 F3 shaft in my G710s. At my (slow) clubhead speed, the shaft is stable.

Hope some of that helps. Best idea is to try them for yourself.

My main reason for wanting to make the switch is to gain some forgiveness and add some distance.  Ping claims these are the longest and most forgiving they have made.  I might go try some out today if I can handle the cold weather

I think I will go and try them out.  I also have the ping g710 irons and the thought of finding something more forgiving and longer is exactly what I am looking for.  Hoping to check them out today

Went to local golf shot and hit the Ping G730 in the Recoil dart stiff flex graphite shaft and I was hitting those clubs a good 10-12 yards farther than my Ping G710's.  Very easy to hit and high launching and I think I am gonna make the switch.  I also hit the Ping G730's in stiff flex steel shaft and those felt pretty good as well but prefer the Recoil graphite stiff flex more as they appear to be longer for my swing.  I am 44 so kind of crazy to think graphite but they felt so good.

I also tried the ping g440 stiff flex steel shaft and those clubs felt great as well.  I would say 5-8 yards shorter than the ping g730 but gonna go and hit them again.

I am getting fit in about 10 days and will try a bunch of different shaft options and report back to what I find.  But those Ping G730's are as forgiving of a club that you will find and they are super long!  Probably go from my 5 hybrid which I hit about 175 to a 7 iron which I hit 165

Great report! I don't think you're crazy to go for graphite, despite your age. Twenty-five years ago I was 44, graphite iron shafts were not very good (I had Titleist DCIs with graphite shafts at that time) but now they are terrific. You will find they are much easier on the joints even at your tender age😉. Looking forward to hear what you end up with.

  • 2 weeks later...

Gents,

I got my fitting done last night and ended up going with the Ping G730's in Graphite Alta (stiff).  I hit the G730's in regular and stiff flex steel shafts and I also hit the Recoil graphite shaft as well.  The recoil seemed a bit whippy and my shots were slicing more right with this shaft so that one did not work for me.  Its kind of weird because I had recoil shafts on my ping g710's and liked them but not on these new irons.  The recoils are 78 grams and the ping alta shafts are 82 grams.

The regular stiff shafts were basically the same performance as the ping alta graphite and the fitter said they performed the same so it was my choice.  I ended up going with the graphite because they were lighter and just felt better and it cost me and extra $14 a club for graphite.  The ping g730's are long and forgiving and gave me about 5 more yards in distance compared to the ping g710's.

I also tried the ping g440s and those were great clubs as well and felt pretty good.  I could of went with either of these clubs but opted for the longer ping g730's.

I ordered the Ping g730's in 6,7,8,9,w,gap,50,56 and then I will add these irons to my 5 hybrid, 9 wood and 7 wood.

Congratulations! Sounds like you made a great choice. I'll be anxious to hear how you like the BunkR wedge. My results out of bunkers are mixed and I'm seriously considering this club to make my life easier out of the sand.

BTW, about 3-weeks ago I ordered the G730 56* SW, but with Recoil Dart 75 F3 shafts and red dot, so heavier and  1* flatter than the rest of the set. It should arrive early next week.
