Irons fitting from last summer - do the specs still apply now if different heads?

Recommended Posts

My current set for the past 2+ years is a 2022 Rogue ST Max OS with TT Elevate 85g R shafts.  They are 2* up and 1/2" extended.  I like them and, for me, I've done relatively well with them.  Nice distance and helps with some mis-hits too.

Last summer right after a round of golf at a local course, they had onsite a free Callaway fitting (outdoors, nice day).  I hit some irons for a half hour or so and the fitter recommended these 2023 Big Bertha irons per the specs shown.  I was surprised I hit them pretty well still on that hot day right after my round.  Same lie recommendation, but hit the shorter standard length shafts which felt pretty good.  I did not order them at the time though since the ETA was 4-6 weeks and late in the summer (Chicago area, so would not have had many good days left in the fall).

Now that I am finally about to pull the trigger on some irons for 2025 (as soon as Callaway has the 1.5X or 2X trade-in promo), they no longer have these Big Berthas online to customize with the shafts.  I see the newest 2025 Elyte X irons out now that look like the similar/forgiving model that might work.  Can I port over these specs (notably the shafts) from the fitting and get the Elyte X instead?  Or does it really not quite work that way and do I need a whole new fitting somewhere?  Thanks!

There are different views on how to fit for shaft selection:

1) Fit the shaft based on consistency, accuracy, feel, shot shape control - but NOT launch and spin.  Use head selection and loft to manage launch and spin.

2) Use the shaft to try and help fit launch and spin.

I'm a proponent of #1.  It's a way more reliable way to manage launch and spin with no potential for negative side effects that might occur when managing launch and spin.   In that case, shaft fitting is really completely independent from the head model chosen.

Other specs:

Playing length - different OEM's use different methods for measuring playing length so (for example) 38" for one OEM might not be exactly the same as 38" for a different OEM.   The difference is usually small - usually within 1/4" - so this can usually be ignored - but stock playing lengths between models can also change - which is something you should pay attention to.  The actual playing lengths - not the relative change to playing length (e.g. 38.5" 5i -  not +1/2")

Lie angle - actual lie angle specs can be translated and likely not to need any adjustment IF shaft is the same and playing length is the same.  But use the absolute lie angles to match - not the relative lie angles.   So +1* in one set might not match +1* in another set.

Swing weight - as long as the grip weight doesn't change AND the shaft weight doesn't change AND the playing length doesn't' change - the swing weight fitting results should translate from one set to another.

Thank you for the great details and opinion, especially on the shafts!

Yes, I did notice that various sets seems to have a slightly different length/lie for a given club.  It typically seems the lofts are the main variables that are focused upon, but you are right.  For example, comparing the 7-irons, the stock length/lie for my current set and the other two I mentioned are actually pretty similar at least (only Elyte X a 1/4" longer):

Rogue ST Max OS: 37.00" / 62.5*

Big Bertha: 37.00" / 62.5*

Elyte X: 37.25" / 62.5*

Why not email the spec sheet to Callaway customer service and ask if possible, can this spec sheet for 2023 Big Bertha irons could be translated for the 2025 Elyte X irons.

The do make both sets of clubs and maybe can eliminate some of the guesswork.

They always seem to be a decent bunch over there whether I queried on new or used club's customization in past.

I called Callaway the other day and asked if the fitting on the Big Bertha's would translate to the Elyte X and the dude on the phone indeed said yes.  So, at least per his opinion, it should be good.
