Wyndham Clark - we in or out?

Recommended Posts

I’m out.
Based on Full Swing footage and the rough tamping down incident, he seems like a needy, over compensating d- bag, and head case.
This is a harsh opinion so hopefully he’s actually a better guy than that.

He's a no for me.

The back story and his ability could have been a banker for him being a fan favourite but some of the absolute drivel that he comes out with had me on the fence. Then, when he then added in the "nighty night" display at the Presidents Cup last year at that point it was possible to confirm that he was in fact a complete d'bag.

Part of the scenery, much more likely to never win a major again than win another one. Like danny willet. Clark in his major appearances has missed the cut in 7 of the 12 he played and of the other 5 he has 1 top 30, the usopen he won. Those aren’t impressive numbers for “world beater”. In fact the more you look at danny willets placements the more clark looks like him win wise.

I think this will age poorly. Clark is a much more complete player than Willett ever was IMO (I could be wrong, just going off memory). Not to say Clark definitely will win another major, but I would not be surprised.

True. Crazy how a guy that many touted as extremely talented never had much success on Tour. Then all the sudden he did.

As has been mentioned on quite a few podcasts now, that's how careers used to be. Having great raw talent as a young player, then having to learn how to play the game at the pro level, and learn how to win (mentally). It's refreshing to see a guy come onto the tour with insane speed and talent, and instead of crumbling he worked through his difficulties and got to the next level.

I like him less than Brian Harman.

Sure that I can remember hearing or listening to something in which either Harman or Clark mentioned that they both on got on very well at the 23 Ryder Cup.

If you scan the OWGR rankings, one of the biggest takeaways is how lopsided Wyndham's + - ratio is.  He's lost 49 points and only gained 12.  The only guys with bigger discrepancies are Scotty and Xander, but that's because Scotty put huge points on the table last year early, and Xander has been injured.

The only bigger named players gaining less points than 12, are Max and Viktor, whose games have jumped off into the deep water.  Even some of the guys from that "other" league have scored more OWGR points playing in some International Series events.

Out until he changes my mind.  He seems detached and self absorbed.  Which would be fine if he won more.  It is simply conjecture though.  I know very little about him.  He could be a super nice guy.  He works hard.  Obvi a hell of a player.  I thnk he'll be off the Ryder Cup team by the time it rolls around.  He's gonna lose all those US Open points by then

Willet was 12th in the owgr going in to the 2016 Masters and 9th after.

Clark was 32nd going in to the 2023 US Open and rose to 13th after.

Memory can be deceiving.   Willet was playing mostly on the Euro Tour at the time and we didn’t know how good he was then.  But he’s certainly a cautionary example of how continued success is never guaranteed in pro golf.

That sounds about right - they must have bonded over a shared dullness and slowness.  The beige brothers. The worst winners of their respective majors for many years.

“Neck injury”. At least man up and finish. He seems to be a fair weather type of guy and absolutely unbearable when things aren’t going great.

Or, he had a neck injury and that led to the poor play.

Indifferent.

That's my middle name.

But it's probably just age.

I rooted for Richard Petty at Daytona, Staubach against the Steelers, Jack in '86, and the Georgetown basketball team under Coach Thompson.

Somehow, I can't get as enthused about today's crop of fine young tour pros.

I know all about Paul Lawrie, who had a fine career (as well as the Open win in monstrous conditions, he has a 4-3-1 Ryder Cup record, 8 tour wins in Europe when the tour was still strong, and other good major finishes including at Augusta) and he has also done a huge amount for Scottish golf through his junior foundation.

As far as I'm aware, he never walked out of a tournament because he wasn't playing well and was heading for a MC either.

That wasn’t the point at all…which you likely know. He was 158th in the rankings when he won the Open.  Miles lower than either Willet or Clark.

Paul Lawrie was not a "miles worse" golfer than Harmon or Clark - he played in Europe and put together a solid career.  You can use world rankings at the time of winning their major all you like; that's just one factor. In the end, this is a humorous thread about WC, who is quite an easy target.  I don't like him or Harmon (more for their personalities than their golf, their careers or their rankings), you disagree.  That's fine. Enjoy your day.

You’re right….and I didn’t say he was “miles worse” just miles lower in rankings.  Clark I’m ambivalent about…Harman has a chip on his shoulders because he is constantly told he’s a short knocker-he’s really not.
But it’s an all good discussion…have a great day.😎
