Wyndham Clark - we in or out?

He has ability as shown by his win at Pebble, but his US Open victory came thanks to Rory getting absolutely sloppy from short range and fairways that were cut wide for reasons no one's ever quite been able to nail down. He got away with a LOT at LACC thanks to the USGA's setup decisions. If it weren't for the Major even his low round and win at Pebble would have just been a little blip that saw him mostly forgotten now.

I'll consider him a player when he gets it done again on the big stage.

He scrambled his butt off at LACC. That to me is the opposite of a ball speed imposter. Rickie played equally as bad t2g that Sunday but Wyndham found a way to get the ball in the hole and that’s a very important skill.

Remember, Pebble was a shortened event by one round. I would not hold to much regard for that win TBH. It was at the front end of his current slide. I get it though a win is a win. Just some prospective like you said with the US Open win.

It'll always annoy me he (or anyone) could get away with blowing his tee shot into freakin Tarzana on the 72nd at LACC.

Lots of people played poorly at times throughout. He scrambled some, but he got absurd breaks off the tee that don't even happen at most Tour stops and never should at any Major, let alone the US Open.

He's managed nothing of note since and until he does I don't consider him elite. Feel free to disagree, but I've never seen him as a legitimate threat to anyone but himself at the Majors and so far that's all he's been.

That's the best angle into 18 green IMO.  Left would have been bad.

Yeah, the angle in from the right side is definitely ideal. He hit a big cut and was in the FW with the perfect angle into that green/hole location. 7i, 197 onto the green and 2 putt par w/a 1 stroke lead. Love him or hate him, he got it done.

*JK! Cool story

To be fair I am only 5'6, so it was appreciated 😅

Another tee box story - a couple of years back I went to watch the International series event at Close House - loads of the LIV guys were playing that week. Standing behind a par 5 tee box, not many folk there. Huge backlog of groups, think there was 3 groups waiting at one point. Anyways they had a box with water / player snacks in front of the tee boarding so I decided to lean on it while waiting for groups to hit - turns out they only painted them black the day before and my white polo was covered with black paint. Totally ruined. Made me appreciate a nice tee box 🤣

I did sneak some water and bananas out of said box to gain a small amount of compensation as they were light on marshalls...

It's funny how the small things stick in your mind to form an opinion on someone. Followed his group at the Scottish Open last summer, seemed like a nice guy. One thing I noticed though was how mindful he was on blocking spectator views when waiting his turn on the tee.

For anyone who has been to a tournament in person it can get really frustrating if you have waited on a tee box to get a good view, to then have the view blocked by a caddy, player, cameraman etc (I know it often can't be helped but sometimes they do spread out a bit more than necessary). Anyways I had a great spot just off centre behind one of the tee boxes and was waiting for the big groups to come through - he realised he was blocking my view of the other players after his shot and apologised and moved more to the side, so not to block anyone. I didn't ask, he just did it.

May not seem a big deal to most but it showed, in that moment, that he cared for the spectator viewing.

Definite merit in the small interactions, but I try not judge a player by any one thing either way. Plenty of stories of jerks being nice in isolation and nice guys maybe getting short after a bad day. He's thrown a lot of tantrums out there and the one making the rounds now is just the most recent.

If he considered more of his actions the way he considered things with you around he wouldn't be hurling clubs with a volunteer in striking distance.  Clearly has more maturing to do but I don't think it's a surprise many won't take to him until and unless that growing up occurs.

Oh man, you and everyone else there!
I’ve said it previously, so pardon me if you’ve heard it. But you could feel the energy leave the property when it was clear Rick was out of contention. Everyone pulling for either Rick or Rory.
The vibe when Wyndham won was def flat.

Blowpig’s poor form hasn’t been talked about enough. Got to 3rd in the OWGR 14 months ago and has been in a free fall ever since. Currently 97th in the datagolf rankings and his strokes gained numbers are back to what they were in 2022. Wouldn’t quite call him a ball speed imposter, he’s a good putter. I just feel like he had a massive spike in performance for 11 months and has regressed back to his baseline. Same thing happened with guys like Ye Yang and Rich Been.

Blowpig went out and won LACC. People only remember the drive on 18 but he scrambled his butt off on Sunday to win.

Negative. 18 was not the only hole with fairways so wide you could host the Macy's Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Parades on it simultaneously. He got away with an absurd amount. He also didn't go out and win it, Rory gifted it to him with piss poor approach shots over and over and over. Did you see anyone else plugging into bunker lips with their irons? That's not to mention Rory not holing anything once he got on the greens.

Clark is known because of a series of unfortunate events. With this locker incident it's doubtful he'll be known for much longer. If they don't find his body somewhere off the Turnpike a week or three from now, if he returns at least we won't have to put up with watching a child at work.
