I’m like 99% sure he has a press conference scheduled for today at the Open, so the fact that Oakmont put this out today is absolutely hilarious and fantastic.

 

Like I feel like you cut the club an enormous, over the top, way too much money “I’m sorry” check before walking off the property after doing something like that.

In previous posts in this thread some people thought Clark likely reached out to Oakmont already to make it right.  Pretty amazing that they would even consider such an obnoxious jerk who wears horribly riduclous hats, would attempt to do anything considerate unless they forced his hand on it.

There are a couple of sites that host majors that you just don't mess with. You walk a little extra gently on the grass at all times. Augusta and Oakmont are at the top of that list. Those clubs don't need anything from anyone.

 

Clark has probably already been called into the principal's office and rightfully so. Stories like this don't help the game or some of the public's perception that golf is still a game for the entitled.

 

Reading between the lines here, it seems like Oakmont made a point with that statement and it was a double-barrel public shaming of Clark.

 

Having some idea of what the membership looks like at that club, I would be more than a little concerned at how the Oakmont membership might define a "meaningful contribution" to a charity of their choosing. Dude better get on a heater because that check won't be light.

I'm not a huge Wyndham fan and maybe there are some underlying issues that we aren't aware of but it's crazy how this is a recurring thing with him.  He nearly hit a volunteer at the PGA when he threw his driver at a corporate sign.

I agree with all you've said, but without the witty sarcastic jesting tone you’ve used to make light of the situation in an attempt to try and paint it as some absurd punishment for a small infraction. Guy has issues that need to be addressed. In this day and age I'm glad at least one institution has realized they have the power to punish someone who thinks they can get away with disrespectful conduct, and actually wield that power accordingly.

I have the same thoughts. Kind of an unhinged stipulation to force upon someone! I wonder if this is something in their bylaws or something but definitely a hot take a golf club can require this.

If I did this at my place of work I would have been arrested and charged with destruction of private property, which depending on the value could be a misdemeanor or felony. As well as loss of job.....just saying.

... To be fair, I think many here would welcome the same thing if he had done this at a Muni, especially after throwing a club that endangered fans a few weeks earlier. Oakmont is no better than any golf course hosting a tournament and having the USGA involved shows this is bigger than one private course. Pay for the damage, donate to a charity and take anger management courses seems appropriate regardless of the venue.

Even though it was the U.S. Open, he was a guest at Oakmont, and any guest doing that would probably be banned. I wouldn’t be surprised if the member hosting the guest might be asked to leave, as well.

It's also a private club. They're not banning him for life, but they'd have the right to do it if they wanted. I would hope the Tour takes some action to clean this up before others think they can get away with similar behavior, but I also get the sense that they would be fine with it if Clark simply plays his way out of relevance

He probably won’t be relevant/competitive enough to compete in the US Open next time it’s at Oakmont anyway. Guy stumbled into his first US Open win and has hardly performed with any consistency since. The pebble beach win was a shortened week fluke.
