I believe this is a new Odyssey putter. A blatant rip-off of the Lab DF3 putter. Very sad!

It's not that I don't get it; the lack of creativity from a company founded on being "pleasingly different" is to laugh. But this phenomenon is about as old as the game itself.

You're not wrong on your last point.

 

What I think causes the conversation is that one of the biggest knocks on LAB has been that the products have been, shall we say, aesthetically lacking.   The shape is recognizable but hardly iconic (at least not yet).

 

If they did a zero torque 2ball, rossie, or #7 (which they have), cool.

 

With the DF shape, I think most accept it because they think it works for them, but I doubt any tour pro is asking Scotty or Odyssey to make  something with that shape.

You can't be iconic by only having 1 pga tour win from 2 years ago.  If that stat doesn't change I'm not sure you will continue to see LAB on tour unless it's one of the players in constant search mode.

Agreed... unless players keep playing them, and people see them making putts.   But it's more likely that the longer the situation you mention goes on that the searchers will look for the next thing to try.

 

OR - and this is where Odyssey may prove to have misstepped - if the #1 putter company validates what you're doing by putting the exact same shape out there.   It could smother them or it could fuel the fire.   The shape is far more likely to be taken for a LAB than someone noticing that it has an insert.

Agree but that's unavoidable by any company for a period of time. 

 

Whether it's an Odyssey Max, LAB or whoever.  If this style of putter doesn't get some wins within the next 12 months you will see it fade into the shadows on tour. 

 

Maybe this style is marketing, maybe its a better way to putt for everyone or maybe it's really more of a help to the average joe public player who doesn't have time to practice putting 3hrs a day.  Time will tell.

They know what they're doing. Odyssey has big budget lawyers they know LAB cant compete with. Likely would welcome the challenge from them as a chance to aquire them.

design patents, especially with putters are a giant waste of money and why companies don't bother. It's also why companies will copy each others top designs and add their flavor to it.  LAB will always be the originator.

wouldnt care if odyssey/callaway (and most others) did try to sue anyone and everyone.....didnt callaway give LAB (and everyone else) a cease and desist over calling a putter a broom stick?

This has been talked about in depth in a few other places.  In short, none of the LAB stuff is new, their patents are terrible, not what most people think and probably not actually enforceable in a real court.  You can read them and see what they are about - not what you likely think.  PXG would like a word about he DF3, but they were not the first with the omega design either.

 

Settlements, licensure agreements and cease & desist are about all that will ever happen and they are mostly bluster and voluntary.

 

If you want to feel sorry for somebody, it is the Japanese companies who have their designs stolen by US companies every year.  If you want to know what is coming next year to Cally, TM and the like, check out Yonex, Honma and Yamaha stuff.

I placed an order for the Odyssey DF3 with the stripe.  My LAB measurements are 35”, 69* lie.  I got a 35”, 70* lie Odyssey.  I will give an honest review in 1-2 weeks once I receive it.  I will place the Odyssey in my Revealer, I will test it in my Iron Archie putting machine, I will compare the 2 in every way I can and try to answer every question I can.  I kept the stock oversized grip and got the Navy strokelab shaft.  
 

*stock Odyssey putters are 72* lie - absolutely take this into account if you actually buy one.
