Gents,

I had room in the bag for 1 club and opted to give the Ping BunkR a go 🙂  64 degree wedge that is supposed to make getting out of Bunkr's easier.  If that is the case its def a club for me as my bunker play is not all that great.  I never hit it......paid $180 for it online and am hoping for the best.  I will report back after a few rounds and let ya know what I think

What shaft did you go with?  If the BunkR works as well as the ChipR did, then I'm all in.

I was gonna match the shaft up with my irons but I ended up going with the stock PING’s lightweight Z-Z115 shaft.  I think it makes sense on this club

The Maltby Sliider Series and the old M Series 1.62 version is way better looking.

64* seems like a lot of loft for a bunker shot. I guess the idea is you don't open the face and just whack it out?

There are certain shots where the volatility of “strokes to hole out” outcomes is much larger than other shots.  Green side bunkers are one of these shots.

As such, just like the other high “leverage” shots, if you need a bunker specific club, GET ONE! 😂

Anyone get some real-world experience with this club? Sand is the worst part of my game by far but ours is mostly medium firm so don’t know how much bounce is too much in those situations. Also I like to manufacture wedge and flop shots around the green- does such a large cavity and sole make this difficult? Lastly, can one expect the grooves on this thing to wear out just as fast as any other wedge based on its construction?

I’ve noticed no performance benefit vs my glide 4.0 58 degree W-grind.  You won’t be manipulating the face on the BunkR, simply too much bounce.  Good around the greens in a fluffy lie, not the club on tight lies. Can’t imagine the grooves being any different from their other wedges in regards to wear.

I ordered a Bunkr with a graphite shaft. I’ve used it for four rounds now. It is as advertised. Great out of deep greenside pot bunkers. Very little effort required but will take some playing around to figure it out in harder sand. I love it for those shots inside 40 yards where you’re hitting over bunkers or mounds. Basically drop and stop but as someone mentioned, tight lies can produce fliers. Just another great club to have in the tool box.

Can y'all chime in some more on this one?  I've started playing ALL my bunker shots with more of a square face and having good (well, MUCH better than before) success.  I have an open spot in the bag and am considering the Bunkr for the very close greenside bunker shots.  Was just hoping to hear some more feedback from the WRX community before pulling the trigger.  Thx!

Awesome club for someone who struggles with sand play. The BunkR is as advertised! It’s been especially good on longer bunker shots for me, with some serious stopping power. I’ve also found it really easy to use when I’m short-sided. Don’t be scared to swing it hard. It has definitely saved me strokes from the sand and around the green. I even got up and down from a trash can on one occasion. This club is nasty!

I have struggled so much with my bunker play for about 14 months that I was willing to try everything.
First I went to James Ridyard's bunker method for dummies (square upright stance, and a pitch shot with dead arms and wrists and a conscious body turn). That helped.
I tried the Cleveland Smart Sole Full Face 58. Yes, it is very good out of bunkers with deep sand, but I really could not make it work in hard conditions and because of the long clubhead I found it pretty useless for pitches and chips.

On to the Ping Bunkr.
First practice session: 50 balls in a row out of the practice bunker. But because everybody said that you need to hit it harder than you think, I did that, and I was surprised to find out that the first 10 or so flew the target green. However, this gave me the opportunity to try it for pitches back to the green from every conceivable lie, and this was the the second surprise. It worked from the fairway, it worked from the rough, it worked off hardpan lies and it even worked out of the most terrible lie I get on courses in my area in the heat of summer: hard ground with patches of rough, where the ball will always end up on the concrete-like ground in a hole between two tufts of grass. I would have never thought that a club with that much bounce could work from that lie, but it did. Longer chips with more run with a delofted face, higher chips, which land softly, real flop shots, no problem. It seems like this club can do everything, and after a while, I also found out that I don't really need to hit it hard to get out of the sand, and for the last 15 bunker shots, I was able to control the trajectory and the length pretty well.
I am sold.

Thank you for the review, you sold me.

An even cheaper option would be to pick up a Ping Eye 2 or Eye 2+ Sand wedge ... legendary out of the sand!

How is it from firm sand, especially with hard shallow sand?

And yeah, my first thought was the Alien edge when I saw the pic.

Just picked one up today. The sand at my course can be hard and shallow, but they just refilled the bunkers. However, if there's a spot in a bunker with hard, shallow sand, I'm sure to find it with my ball sooner than later. I'll be out on the weekend and report back.

Looking forward to this report.   Locally we have hard bunkers that are basically just generic dirt instead of true bunker sand.   They compact very easily so I have always been concerned about the higher bounce.

The bunkers at our course tend to be a mixed bag of thick sand and shallow sand with firm clay underneath. What works one day in one bunker won't necessarily work the next time. I'm hoping to find a little more consistency. I'm also curious to see how far a full shot goes. It did work nicely off of my lawn which could be described as light rough 😄. By this time tomorrow I should know, although I'm not going to TRY going into a bunker.
