Wedge Options for Single/One Length Players

Recommended Posts

I’ve switched to single length.  Liking my 6-GW with a 5H at the top.  I just haven’t decided on the SW and LW yet.

I currently have my old standard length wedges.  What have the experienced single length players settled on?

Options:

Stick with my standard lengths

Adjust my standard lengths up an inch or so

Cobra’s One Lengths (37”)

Avoda’s Same Length (37”)

Avoda’s Combo Length (36”)

Edel SLS-01

Avoda wedges blow everything out of the water...if you have a shallow wedge swing. There aren't any grind options, and the LW is a very low bounce club. SW and GW are closer to the standard 10s designs. I can spin these more than any other wedge I've tried.

Cobra wedges look to have more options with more bounce if you have a steeper swing. Edel's are likely similar.

Total club weight is important with single length sets, so I would match your length when choosing which wedge. A "7i length" wedge will be about 270g and a "9i length" will be about 282g. Conventional wedges are about 300g +/- 4 on each end for a gap or lob wedge.

You can use standard wedges at 37", but they will feel heavy. About 30 more grams in the head makes for a mighty swing weight shift.

Don’t forget Wishon’s EQ1-NX wedges.  I have the sand wedge but didn’t get the lob wedge. They are big heads.  I play the set at 37 inches.

I am comfortable with a standard lob wedge, but an inch longer is a great compromise.

The EQ1-NX have a great leading edge and sole shape, very versatile. The higher cg and milled faces keep the spin perfect for me.

I play them in both SL set and Traditional length sets (with added weight)

Agree here with the Avoda wedges, I have a combo set of Avoda irons and the wedges are really really impressive. I did have to make a bit of a change when it came to chipping for them though and had to be a bit more shallow (but I have also been working with a teacher on shallowing my swing anyways for full swings).

I did run into an issue with the OL Avoda wedges where they would dig hard with my traditional wedge swing (very wristy) but no regrets after making a few changes to my swing. They sound and feel great, the spin numbers are crazy and the control I get on the flight of them is fantastic.

I've mentioned in the past that one of the biggest reasons I went SL is because of my height. My previous fitted VL set was +1.5" which was great for a 36.5" sand wedge, but got a little (ok a lot) difficult to manage when I got up to the 40.5" 3 iron.

So I got the EQ1-NX down to the GW, built at 37.5". That's 6i for most people, but tracks to my previous 9i length.

For wedges, I ended up going with Sub70. I had them built shorter (36.75") because of the heavier heads, but that's still "long" compared to standard length, but a comfortable length for me. And I asked them to cherry-pick the lightest heads they had in stock to further help avoid a huge swing weight issue.

I like the feel of heavier swing weight than most, so the fact that they're still a little heavier (as are my irons) than most would prefer works for me.

Edel is phasing out their SMS wedges for SMS Pro wedges with a bar insert instead of the 3 weights. With the three weight ports it is easy to hit whatever total mass you want/need for a one length wedge.

I went with the new SMS Pro wedges recently as I think the 21 gram bar in neutral will be OK...but they have flip weights that distribute the mass to either heel or toe. Definitely wish they would stay with the three weights but we could**** be seeing a move to a) make the system even more dummy proof and have just one insert to flip and/or b) avoiding further issues with PXG (or so I've heard via internet runors).

Anyways, had I known they would be phased out forever I would have picked up a few.

Lastly: They told me on the phone that something should release later this year for the irons...my guess is they are moving to these stupi...I mean...these flip bars for the irons instead of the three weights. If this is true I will pick up an extra set of the current SMS Pros as a backup set.

I settled on 35 1/2" wedges [50* & 56*]. I continually gripped down on single-length wedges, so I switched. Length tiers are a sound fitting solution. My hybrid and irons are 37" long, and all fairways are 42".
