Is GC3 or R50 an upgrade on Mevo+? (And is it worth it)

GC 3 for sure, no for R50.

Curious your reasoning about the R50?

From what I saw, accuracy issue and for $5000.  Why not get a BLP or GC3.

I did upgrade from MEVO + to Garmin R50. For my needs this really worth it. I miss the tiny MEVO+ to bring it to the range outside. But I do not miss all the hassle with setup on MEVO. Outdoor there is no big difference, indoor the Camera based R50 does a lot better than MEVO. The Garmin HTH membership with $99 per year or $9.99 per month (if you use it only 4-5 months indoor intensive) is absolutely ok. And the HDMi Port directly at the device is great, no extra Computer or iPad needed.

I can not speak about GC3 because there is nobody in my area that used one.

I’m toying with whether to switch from

a Mevo+ to something like a GC3 or R50. Does anyone have experience making that kind of switch? Is it worth the extra money? Or is the juice not really worth the squeeze?

I would say yes. I used a friends mevo+ with the pro package prior to purchasing a GC3, the mevo+ is very difficult it setting up and needing an ipad or something else to get the data. The R50 is really in my opinion a launch monitor/sim all in one. If you're looking for the best accuracy on the market from a brand (foresight), ease of setting up and the ability to play sim golf or use it outside/on course there's not many better options than the GC3 unless you're looking at a Quad/Max. My buddy also has an Full Swing Kit and it's still night and day difference between the GC3 when it comes to anything under 50 yards from an accuracy stand point.

I switched from a Mevo+ to a GC3. For me, it was a huge upgrade.

Being able to use the launch monitor in a smaller room was key. Mevo+ can give you very good data, but you need a lot of space and you need to use RCT golf balls. The GC3 overall is juts more accurate and much easier to setup and use. Fewer variables. I have not regretted the switch once.

At one point I had the mini Mevo for outdoors and the original Skytrak for my simulator. I upgraded to the GC3 and have been pretty happy. Have it connected to a pretty powerful gaming laptop. The R50 seems slightly more convenient in that it looks like an HDMI cable to the projector is a nice touch. Otherwise  see, I find the GC3 to give me accurate data vs what I see on course.

I have had a Mevo+ and a GC3.  The GC3 is much more user friendly especially if you want to take it to the range or use it on course.  I have not tried the R50, but I have seen it in person and it is large.    Overall,  I am very happy with the GC3 over the MEVO both from a convenience and accuracy perspective.

It depends what you want. My Mevo+ indoor setup is used 99% for practicing. I haven’t found another software that is as close as possible to the original (=trackman) for practice, that’s why I’m sticking with the Mevo+ for the moment.

If you wanna play courses all the time on GsPro, I think the optical solutions work more accurate.

I’m playing the lottery on a weekly basis, not for the big jackpot but for 30k at least, just to afford the Trackman iO + couple years of subscription. It might be overkill, but we’re still on golfwrx here…

MEVO plus is still a good device especially if you have a room for training where you can let it be at his place. In this case there is no hassle with setup. And if your space is huge enough for the 8feet distance between you and the the MEVO and another minimum of 12feet ball flight till a net or screen, if you use RCT balls everything will be Fine.

More than half a year now with the R50. There have been some firmware updates, one was a step back, but it took only 2 weeks to fix an other one… for tiny rooms you can have the ball flight visuals with offset from the center, which is a cool feature. But overall nothing that changed my mind in one or the other direction.
The device is superb, the box leaves some dust from the inside that you should clean off the sensor front. the box and the device are to large and Heavy to carry it frequently at the range for some outside Sessions. And on grass, some owners reported reading problems.

I personally do carry my R50 to the covered driving range with mats, maybe once per month. But this mostly because I want to collect some data with Woods and drivers. My garage is simply not huge enough to swing the long sticks without worries.

the internal battery is very good, there is no need to watch out for power supply around the hitting bay.

with my MEVO Plus before I was more often outside at the range, but I did need an external battery power bank. The Setup was a hassle and sometimes the reading was completely off. Spin Rates with range balls the MEVO was not able to Track.

What I miss at the R50:

club comparision, the possibility to test 2 (or more) clubs or shafts side by side. This is my biggest wish for the software Engineering

also whats missing is the possibility to play specific holes on a specific course. You can not jump directly to „Amen Corner“ or to a specific hole on your Home course and play some balls from different lies. For sure you can replay a shot again and again.

Thanks @Streuner Good Info.

My use would be 99% range, split maybe 40% on grass and 60% on mats.  But also taking on course so that I can use real balls, to get data.  To clarify when I say on course, I don't' mean an actual round 🙂    I work at a course with 36 holes.  3 to 4 days a week we always have one 9 shut down from about  1 to 5 pm, blocked off for leagues in the evening.   So I just jump in a cart from my office, and head out to either a par 3 if I'm working on irons or a nice weide par 4/5 if working on driver.  Set up hit maybe a dozen balls at a time, go collect them and repeat once or twice.  So I'm guessing in that scenario it wouldn't' be too cumbersome to take out.

When on the range, it's about 50 yards from my office, so again not a long walk. We are on grass from May to October (except for after heavy rains) then on Mats from October to May.  We do get cold and snow in the winter, but there's always at least a week or so each month during the Jan/Feb  where it's passable enough to hit balls

Two specific questions based on what I've read:

  • When you are hitting balls in the practice mode, can you scroll back and view previous shots during the session, or do you lose that data once you hit a new shot.  I know it can be stored on the garmin app.  But can you refer back to other shots right there on the spot.
  • Internet connection, when practicing on the range, do you have to have it connected to the internet for it to save/sync the shots.  Or could I just keep the unit on, walk back to my office and do the synching there before turning it off.

Appreciate all the info.

No, You do not have to have Internet while using, the device checks from time to time your membership, thats all.
you can jump back to previous shots while using the range modus as much as you want. Also you can watch the Range Session later at the device itself. You can see the impact video for each shot as well. The App is a bit a hassle to get the details from your range session, Average data no Problems. Indiviual shots are difficult to find. But you can export the complete session into a text file.

But Check the other members Posts from grass lie and R50 usage. For outside use maybe there are better options.

Thanks for all that!

Yeah, I have a bit of experience with the app from when I had the R10.  I could export the data but it was a bit of work to do so.

As for the grass tee comment, I have heard that from some others, I just haven't seen another camera based system that does as much as the R50.  Like the GC3s but it lacks a lot of the club data that the R50 proides.   I do split time between mats and grass.
