AXIOM 105s soft stepping

Hi there.

is there any CON to soft step an AXIOM shaft 3x to reach something that feels like regular flex?

The question is because I like the feel of the Axiom 75reg but the weight is simply to light for me. the 105s will be even stiffer than the 75s

the .355 tapered version is available down till 2iron I could easy assemble the 2iron saft in the 5i head. The graphic decals will be very close to the grip but who cares...

I would start with the 5i and 6i for a frist try out if there is no significant argument against. The shafts are expensive, so it would be nice to get some feedback before I pull the trigger.

Not specifically a con, but soft stepping, even that much will not be the same as going down a flex. The butt end wills till be stiff flex as it's mostly the tip that gets softened up when stepping. Whether the end result is close enough or not to what you want to end up with is a question only you can answer. But I'd suggest trying it with just one single club first before building the whole set or even the two you're thinking of.

Soft stepping constant weight taper tip shafts will also reduce the final cut shaft weight. Roughly by about 4-5 gm for 3 stoft steps. Whether that's a pro or a con will depend on how good a fit the original cut weight might have been.

I really would like to go down to regular in that case, but there is simply no regular option in the 105 Gramm Series.
If regular would be available there would be no need to go this Path.

I understand that I only soften up the tip section and the rest of the shaft stays as stiff as before. But the butt end of the shaft is the stiffest part and now I will cut 1.5 Inch more away from this side.

That's why I said "mostly." But a shift in the butt of only 1.5" usually isn't going to be that significant.

Yes, I know and that is unfortunate, nor is it limited to the Axiom's. If you want to get down to reg flex, you pretty much are limited to < 100 gm. So for those that want soft and heavy need to make a compromise. Either with material (go back to steel), weight, or stiffness.

But there is a big difference between 75 gm and 105 gm - have you spent any time with something in the middle - maybe 90-95 gm shafts?

i was trying a set of MMT 95s shafts. they are about 91-92 in playing lenght. they felt a bit harsh but not to bad... I did soft step them 1x and they have been ok.

overall I did like them more in the longer irons, less at my scoring ones. But with the MMT I would have more options in the weight categories. it could be 95 / 105 + wedge shafts into a ironset... I was thinking about this as well.

As many other golfers I am happy with some weight in the hands on the wedges and maybe 9i and 8i. from the 7i and down I am playing better, if the club is getting lighter. At the moment I am playing all wedges and my 9i with Golf Pride MMC +4 midsize grips which are nearly 70g. from 8i and down I switch to WINN grips that are 15g less weight in midsize. this works ok for me.

I did assemble a AXIOM 75g regular to a spare 6i head just to try it out. But this weight step is simply to much. I have absolutely no gain in distance or dispersion with this club. The same head and a Nippon Modus 120s is delivering similar results simply from better ball contact. But in direct comparison MMT 95s to Axiom 75reg I would absolutely choose the AXIOM

That could be a costly adventure. Point is that the axioms have a profile for long mid and short irons.

I worked the trim instructions a bit to my own likings. Fuji could have been smarter here as there many various lofts and head weights on the market today (my set does not have a head with the weight of a conventional #5, ± 255gr.)

Axioms are now offered in taper tip as well which would make soft stepping 2-3x simple
