New iron troubles MP245 w/MMT 105

Recommended Posts

Been playing the OG ZX5/ZX7 combo since 2021 with Modus 120. Irons were fine but wanted to try the MP245 as I loved the way it felt (much better than the T200 which was on the short list).

I have the MMT 105S in my T200 2i and really liked the feel of it so I said let’s try the MMTs in the MP245s after reading all the rave reviews here.

ive given them a go on the course, range and simulator. The sound of hitting these sound awful at times when not flushed. Kind of like hitting rock hard balls. Not consistent with them at all. In fact, went back to the Srixons  for the time being.

When I hit the MP245 7i it was with the AMT Black S300. I’m thinking it’s got to be the shafts that just don’t match what I’m used to. Maybe the weight?graphite?stiffer? I’m not really sure but I, thinking of pulling these shafts and putting the Modus in them but don’t want to throw good money after bad if it’s the heads. So in a long winded way hoping someone may have some insight before I either get new shafts or sell them altogether.

thanks in advance.

Is it the sound and sound only that's off? Could be some strange combo of the resonance from the AMT shaft playing better with the off strikes than the MMT. If the shaft works well and isn't causing you to make more bad strikes than you otherwise would I assume dowels and foam can help tweak sound and vibration in graphite in at least some way as they do in steel but zero see idea how much.

How many shots did you hit during the 7 iron demo? I can't recall what shaft was in the 245s when I hit them but even on center strikes they were a bit harsh and clicky for my tastes.

Hit the 7i alot during the demo. Clearly the mishits feel terrible but even the short irons when I hit good shots just feels really harsh.

im not sure if the srixons are just that much better or it’s the shaft.

I think it's more likely the shaft.

Feel is obviously very subjective but I played the MMT 105S in both a srixon combo set and some T100. I also tried the Modus 120 in both those sets.

Regardless of shaft, the srixon was noticeably softer.

This only matters if you really like the Modus but want to get into graphite but What led me to the Modus was the general consensus on here that you can really feel the shaft load, which is what I prefer. Similar to how I interpret the feel of the graphite design DI wood shafts.

Like you, I felt the MMTs were a bit clunky and felt a bit harsh at times -  especially with less than max effort ( I'm not WRX long but, mid 160s ball speed and 7 iron at 90mph ish).

I have found (to the detriment the bank account), the closest thing that feels like a Modus in a graphite offering is surprisingly the steelfiber FC115. Can't see myself playing another iron shaft.

It might be the combination of head and shaft. I had the similar harsh sound experience with mp221 and mmt125s. I decided to go with mmt since I really like it in zx7. The performance is good, the feel is fine, but the sound is just not right. Even when I hit the sweet spot, the sound is harsher than zx7. Not sure if it was me that did something wrong during reshaft. Later I put the original kbs c-taper back to the mp221 and it sounds much better. Probably you could find a local store to try different shaft with 245 to see how it goes.

As for mp245, I had low expectation on the feel and sound. It is much crispier than zx7. However, it actually feels pretty good in the hollow body category. Hope you could find the right shaft that fits your taste.

I'm a huge fan of Modus 120S but need graphite for the benefit of my elbows and wrists.

I have tried almost every graphite iron shaft out there. The MMT 125S has been the closest for me in terms of feel and performance.

For a time I used an MMT 105S in my five iron to get a little more speed but it felt like a different profile to me and my timing was never where I wanted it to be.

I know it's a little late in terms of your current set but don't sleep on the 125S. There aren't many heavier graphite shafts available in this flex range...most are X or TX.

That’s kind of how I feel. Like my timing just isn’t there and the shafts don’t feel anything like the modus 120. FWIW, I’ve hit modus 105 during fittings and absolutely hated it I don’t really know why it felt so bad and the results were always bad. This kind of feels like them

FWIW I built my own set of irons on the MMT 125S at standard length and the swing weights turned out fine with no extra steps. Worth a try.

If you have the stiff in the Modus 120, it's worth noting the MMT 105 stiff is stiffer, possibly a full flex stiffer.  Modus 120 stiff has a profile that's *very* close to DGR.

I hit the 245's and the 925 forged yesterday, both with MMT 105s.

The 925 felt noticeably better to me.  I did NOT like the 245's, the 243's were nice, but didn't feel any better than the 925 and the 925 were noticeably more forgiving.

I have not played the MMT 105s in ANY iron(other than testing), I play the Axiom 105X and Recoil 110 F5.  The ZX5 felt better to me than the 245, the ZX7 feels better than all of the Mizunos save the 241.

As far as shafts, the Modus 120 has always been somewhat of a unicorn shaft.  Not much I have ever tried felt like it, I have tried just about every graphite shaft out there and there aren't any I would say are similar.  I have not hit SF 115cw, so that may be what I am missing.  However the Modus 120 is NOT for me, not even close, and I really like the MMT 105s, so the fact that you like the Modus 120 and are having trouble with a set with MMT105s in them makes sense to me.

As I get to 49 my SS has dropped which is why I was looking at the MMT 105s, and am seeking a set of 925 Forged with MMT 105s shafts now.

Good info. I have played the MMT 105 S extensively, and it is an excellent shaft. If I may pick your brain for a moment, I would appreciate any insight.

I have a good bit of Callaway credit, and I am debating using it on an iron set. They do not offer the MMT 105 S. They have the MMT 95 and MMT 105 TX. They also have some other graphite options like KBS TGI, Recoil Dart and Steelfiber. They also have the Axiom 105 S, albeit at a stiff up-charge.

I could go MMT 95 and go lighter. I could go MMT 105 TX and soft-step. No need for you to opine on those unless you want to. I am specifically seeking any thoughts you might have on going all-in and getting a set with the Axiom 105 S, seeing that you play the Axiom 105 X. All of this in light of my “best” graphite shafts being the MMT 105 S and Steelfiber i110 R. For whatever reason, the Dart 105 profile does not seem to be great for me.

Appreciate anything you might be able to add on the Axioms. Thanks!

HA, so I have been on Callaway looking at the Tours and the a Tour CB combo set, and you are correct, they do not have any with the MMT 105 s, there aren't any on Pre-owned either.  I am toying with MMT 95s, but haven't had a lot of time to decide.

I love my Axioms, I wish they were Stiff flex.  If they were I would not be even looking.  The MMT was a finalist in X flex when I could still handle that stiffness.  I have tried soft stepping TX 105's and they did not work the way I wanted.  I also like the Recoil Dart.  So the fact that you don't line up with the Dart and I do makes everything just a little off.

The Axioms in the X like to go straight, it could be some that I need S, but I have heard other people say the same thing. I have not tried them in the S, but I am guessing I would really like them since I do like the MMT in S flex, are they worth the extra?  At 112 additional per club over say the KBS TGI 100?  I would not say they are not worth that much more.

Personally I would call and see if they can do MMT 105s.

Sounds to me like a little more time invested in these will be worth it... probably just the different weights throwing you off.  I always have trouble going from heavier to lighter, but not the opposite.  The MMT are really good, but I will agree.. the mis hits on the 245, meh.

Great info, thanks! Yeah, I do kind of like the Dart 105, but they just don't perform for me like the MMT and Steelfibers do. As a general matter, I have never seemed to click with Recoils, whether 95, 110, Dart, etc.

I recall that Callaway may do the MMT 105 S if you request, but they charge as if it is a totally retail shaft, not subsidized (so to speak) like their actual shaft offerings. If I am going to pay a premium, I might as well try a set with the Axiom 105 S. And in light of Callaway's return policy (the reason I have the extensive credit in the first place), there really is no risk to me to try out the Axioms. I feel like the MMT 95 might be too much of a compromise for me, as that drop in weight often does not work for me. And like you, I have also not loved the 105 TX soft-stepped in the past, hence why I shy away from those as well.

Amazing the hoops we jump through for a darn golf shaft! Once again, appreciate the insight.

KBS TGI as a no up charge shaft is a great option. I’ve played a lot of graphite options and overall I think the TGIs are my favorites.
never got along with MMT at any weight. They feel clunky and just kind of strange to me.

Have you had the sw/loft/lie angles checked?

I just reshafted my 925Fs with MMT 125S after not getting along with the stock DG115 shafts. Made a world of difference.

Similar to you, I just couldn't make clean contact consistently with the DG115s.

The heads are world class albeit about 8-9g lighter than my forged Miuras (or match a club longer) so the heavier shaft actually helped in my case which I didn't expect.

Mizuno JPX 925 Forged head weights:

5i - 249.2g

6i - 256g

7i - 264.9g

8i - 270g

9i - 277.7g

Pw - 287g

Gw - 292.3g

For comparison, Miura KM-700

4i - 250.7g

5i - 257.2g

6i - 264.1g

7i - 270.9g

8i - 278.6g

9i - 286.5g

Thanks, and yes, I have considered the TGI 90 along with the other Callaway graphite offerings (small up-charge for the TGI). I have tried the TGI 90 and 100. I found the TGI 100 too stiff and boardy for me. The TGI 90 is ok for me in terms of profile, but lighter than I prefer. I would love a TGI 100 that wasn't extra stiff, but they don't really offer that (though I could soft-step once or twice and see how that works out). Appreciate the thought.

Agree. This is why I've ended up in MMT 125 stiff. There are very few options for a shaft at this weight and flex. It seems like a bit of an untapped market, albeit a small one.

OP, I had a similar experience.  Went to my golf store and was trying several irons, but I was focused on the 245.  Tried them with the DART shafts and they were ok with crumy feel.  Felt like I was thinning every shot. Had the rep put in Modus 105R which I thought might be too stout for me but darn if the Mizuno feel came back with better contact and flight.  Didn't feel like waiting 8 weeks for these clubs so I found a used set of Srixon Z forged irons with the Modus 105R shafts at the store and bought those.  The Z Forged irons don't look like blades but more like Players Distance Irons anyway hit them well so...

That’s kind of how I feel. Like my timing just isn’t there and the shafts don’t feel anything like the modus 120. FWIW, I’ve hit modus 105 during fittings and absolutely hated it I don’t really know why it felt so bad and the results were always bad. This kind of feels like them

Would recommend getting one club from each set and putting them on a postal scale.  See what you find out.

A number of newer irons are not just lighter in the shaft, they're lighter in the head.  So even if you added a graphite shaft at the same weight as your Modus, you may still be 10-20g lighter overall.  And this will absolutely kill your timing and sequence, especially if you like the softer handles on the Modus - I have yet to find a graphite shaft with a soft enough handle.  This is likely resulting in bad sounding mishits.

The shafts in my i525 were only 17g lighter than the $-Taper Lite I had in my prior irons, but the static weight of the i525 7i was 31g lighter overall than my prior set.  A video of my swing shows how many flaws were introduced into what was previously a reasonably sound swing.

I also considered re-shafting.  With the price of new shafts, and the potential hidden problems with pulls, I decided to cut my losses and just order new irons.
