Need a Hybrid

DooZ

Recommended Posts

Retiring my 4 iron finally and need to replace it with something that I can hit relatively high to 200 yds. I already play a 21° 7w to 210-220.

I haven't had much luck with hybrids in the past, but due to age, etc., it's time to give it my full attention. I'm currently trying a Cally super hybrid 5H 24° which is ok, it's great one shot, but not so much the next.

I'm a scratch to +1 player and my normal ball flight is right to left (right handed). I have an open mind and wallet to get the right club to meet my needs. I'm looking in that 24° range, adjustable hosel, easy launch from the fairway & rough with no closed faces bc I'll hook it off the planet.

I kinda live in the boonies, so when I do get to civilization I need a list of contenders to try out....Ty

Titleist TSR3 or GT3 allow you to alter the weight positioning and the hosel too, so should be on the list.

Cobra Darkspeed is great for distance and forgiveness at your speed.  plus the hosel adjustments are unmatched if you want to keep it from going left and dial in distance.  I also love the gt2.  I'd recommend getting a shaft closer in weight to your irons and shorter than stock.  All the OEM's make their hybrid shafts too long and light stock IMO. instead of 40" i'd go with closer to 39" and 90g for instance. (that is where many have issues with consistency on hybrids in my experience, too light and long)

This is the way.  I play my irons +.5 in while the most consistent club in my bag is a TSI2 3hybrid with a Atmos Black TS 9x shaft at -.5in.  This discovery has completely changed my thinking when it comes to FW and Hybrid shafts. Consistent contact and ball flight is the goal now.

The hybrids I've had the most success with were Titleist and Ping because I could adjust them to make it as anti-hook as possible. Combined with a heavier shorter shaft I can swing them with confidence knowing that I'm not going to pull it 20 yards long and left of my target.

I'd recommend Ping G440. Or G430. The flat setting makes all the difference. And it's so consistent across the face.

Ping g425/430 hybrid with flat setting work great for me. It’s just so easy to hit. Though you may not need that forgiveness at your handicap, it definitely worth trying.

9 wood?

The Mizuno ST-Z 230 hybrid is nice and easy on the wallet.

Try Taylormade qi35 hybrid and potentially a 9 wood. What I read, you could be happier with a 9 wood. I think you need to be a hybrid guy to like them. If you’re not, stay with wood/iron combo.

I just picked up a qi35 standard 4 hybrid. Like you i play a draw and hate hybrid because of closed faces and hooks. It came in yesterday so im going to test tonight. Ill let you know how it goes. I ordered it with a hzrdus black 80g stiff 1/2 short of stock length. I planned on playing it in the lowest loft setting on the sleeve to open the face.

I took a chance on an apex pro hybrid from callaway pre owned and it is unbelievable. I wanted something I could flight lower off the tee so I was experimenting to replace 7wood. In the past I haven’t gotten along with hybrids but this thing is fantastic, it’s so workable in both directions and the distance consistency across the face has really surprised me. I think I paid $100 for it and it has been well worth it for me.

I had been a Ping fan for ages, but I just cannot get comfortable with their hybrids despite how popular they appear (plus the alignment aid just bugs me, I hate em).

So after hitting multiple brands & configurations today, I settled on the G440 5H 26° turned down 1.5°. Launch & distance fit the window I was looking for. The true test will come when I can get it outside. As luck were to have it, did a search here and found a member selling one. It was a good day. Thanks for all the suggestions & comments.

My first Ping club since an ISI driver.

Good choice, I tried to convince myself irons were better at the top of the bag, I also tried 3w, 4w, 7w. I now have the three Ping G430s top of the bag, day and night difference for me.

I got the 440 3 hybrid today. Tried the qi35 and it set up well, looked slightly open but hit it to far, would go as far as my 3 wood.

I've had an Apex pro in the bag for years.  I've tried to replace it multiple times, but there's just something about it that works for me.  It's pretty small compared to other hybrids and sits open.

It's not adjustable, but you can find them for dirt cheap on Preowned so the experiment won't cost you much.

I was hitting the Ping Alta Blue 7s in the store, but the one I purchased was the Ping Tour Chrome 85sIf there is significant difference, I'll pick up a eBay special cheap stock shaft and go from there.
