Very high ranked player at the Scotty Robertson snapped his putter in anger, bought a new one at the clubhouse (he started the day with 13 clubs).  3 putt on 10 and walked off the course.  I wonder how he explains that to his college coach.  Pretty crappy behavior for someone at that level.

Well we saw how Fields reacted to the Potter situation... started him as the #1 in the next tournament.

That's too bad about the WD...could other factors have been at play?

Also, is it me, or is the field unusually weak for this tournament?
Are most HS kids busy with graduation activities?

Very few big names and I noticed the top 60 players were playing similar scores to typical AJGA, so the set up was not unusually difficult?

Looks like a lot of the same names from 2024 to 2025 to me.

What factors could excuse that behavior?   They closed the practice green from a 5am storm that left puddles, so no one could warm up, but everyone had to deal with that.   I don't think they were able to mow the greens either.

It's a 6600 yard course, so scores seem pretty high for the quality of the field all in all.  Lots of SEC/Big 10/ACC commits with some big scores.   Wind was howling today.

With the nature of that tournament, and the effort the club and community put into the hosting and hospitality, it seems pretty crappy for the highest ranked player in the field to act that way.

You may be right, but what's interesting to me is this year's event is worth 86 Power whereas the last two years were 54 and 52, respectively.

Perhaps the old computer programming adage of GIGO - garbage in, garbage out. Many have discussed how most ranking related software programming is flawed & your observation that it’s “interesting” is a nice/polite way of saying it’s wrong 😂

I do think there is something to these regional events getting weaker over time.  I think it's because the top kids are focusing more and more on Am events.  The Robertson is still a 120-point AJGA event, so it's pretty deep.  It started out of the gates as a 150-pt event last year.

I do caution about reading too much into the strength of these fields in the spring because we don't really know how good some of these guys may end up being.

And I do believe that if you're progressing nicely, you're probably not playing in the same event more than two years in a row, if that.  The 2023 champ is playing in a national championship this weekend and the 2024 champ is 4th in AJGA and top 200 in WAGR.  He had to finish 1st or 2nd again or otherwise hurt his rankings on both fronts.  There's not much to gain and a lot to lose by playing in it again.

Those two situations aren't even remotely in the same ballpark.  Snapping a putter and then quitting a tournament is much more serious than a college kid giving a little heckle to a professional (in a practice round no less) where said professional then overreacts and makes a mountain out of a molehill.  (Different topic, but what kind of treatment is he going to get at Bethpage in September....Potters comment will be pretty small compared to what the New Yorkers will bring).  What red blooded American Male hasn't heckled a professional sports player at some point in their life.

I've always held the belief that unless you are physically injured and can't continue or there is a life threating family situation you post your score.  If it's a score that is embarrassing then use it as motivation to get better, but be a real man and post your score.

Ya obviously it's different. I wouldn't want that type of attitude in my program, although there's a lot of kids with bad attitude in college golf, so some coaches must not care all that much if they're producing.

Which attitude?  The club snapping/quitter or Potter and his "heckling"?

Potter is a good kid, met him last month at a TX Golf function, but I'm a Tommy Morrison fan just for the fact that Tommy looks like he should play TE for the Longhorns and not golf:).

If I had already signed the club snapper, we would have a discussion about proper etiquette, etc, that's not how we do things at XYZ University.  If he's on the team already....we are having a come to Jesus moment.

You just don't want to end up a Woody Austin meme woody-austin-putter-break.gif

probably didn’t bother paying his dues just to stay in the rankings

I was wondering if you had to be a member to show up in rankings.  I heard people mention they didn't pay their dues this year, but they are still playing invitationals, but may have misheard.

I had thought that you showed up in their rankings if you played other top events, but weren't a member, but could be wrong.

Yes, hence the Fields reference.

And it's AV's attitude I wouldn't tolerate.

Also he's never done many AJGAs to begin with.

He put up some pretty crazy Trackman #s on Thursday.IMG_0965.heic

Some kids were pretty excited to have him there and play with him, and to go do that was pretty crappy IMO.

He played enough AJGA ranked events that he should have a good AJGA ranking.   I can't see anything about needing to be a member to be ranked.   I don't know if he aged out of an age limit, or got removed for a reason.   I'm a bit curious if this is a common thing for him.

I know for a fact that you can't sign up for an AJGA invitational unless you are a dues paying member, as I had to pay up before I could register my son for the Simplify earlier this year.  It wasn't showing up as tournament he could apply to until the dues were paid.

I know for some of the national events and US Junior, not everybody who had a finish there is in the Rolex rankings.

FWIW, aside from the annual AJGA dues, I recall the tournament fees for invitationals were waived or refunded for the participants (and w great food/hospitality) so it was a pretty good deal and we didn't mind paying the annual dues.
