Luck had nothing to do with the shot at 13. It was a terrible shot.

You missed the point.

Or he was unlucky that several great drives caught the lip. Or that he chipped it in the water on 13. Or that he missed three short putts on the back 9. This was one of the greatest wins ever, the ability to survive being knocked down so many times was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The shots on 4, 7, 15, 16, 17, playoff 18 were all timers…

As the Brits (and Peter Crouch the retired footballer and now podcaster) might say, w.r.t. being knocked down so many times & getting up again

..."Chumbawamba"!

...p/s: Rory has previously famously quoted Peter Crouch...

Though it was an unfortunate skirting of media responsibilities, given what we saw today it’s very possible Rory would’ve gotten himself in way worse personal and professional trouble if he stayed around and blew his top after the US Open failure.

It’s possible to be both cowardly and wise in a single decision. Not too many people, especially in an individual sport, have the mettle and wisdom of Rose.

and there it is...the Rory faithful giving excuse for his petulant behavior and poor sportsmanship. you guys make me laugh.

For those contending around him having an all time great hit a chip in the water there is pure golf gods luck. Rory could hit that same shot ten million times and not hit it in the water.

Under no pressure, yes a talent like Rory would hit it 100% of the time. But with pressure he’s shown a penchant for bad strikes in the biggest moments. Not quite as bad as Norman, but maybe more like early career Mickleson. Rory even did the exact same thing earlier in the round

But what Rory showed this Masters was real resilience from mistakes that would have sunken his earlier rounds.

The greatest week in golf (at least for me) is finally over.  Always sad when the masters is over.

Indeed. But it will be interesting to see the other majors coming up. Quail Hollow sets up extremely well for McIlroy. Would be cool if Spieth can find some magic. I really want to see Åberg win a major soon, but who knows. Rough collapse for him on 17 & 18 today.

Nope, there isn’t an example in golf history of a shot like that being missed like that. That was one if the lowest pressure shots of the day, he was in total control with a chip that you’re supposed to hit way left and let funnel near the hole. That was bad luck.

So calling Rory ’ “cowardly” is excusing his behavior? That’s a leap of logic worth a billion chuckles….

but for real yeah maybe a more stable, stoic or hardy person would have stuck around to answer pedantic questions after a gut wrenching meltdown, but not everyone is Randolph Scott. Rory should have and did get criticized for the peel out, but for sure he wouldn’t gotten much worse if he stayed and was moody AF.

Just look at how some people in this thread are killing Bryson for some fairly innocuous comments.

Man people are weird, moody and tribal

So Scotty firing a hosel rocket doesn’t count? That’s bad luck and not just a bad shot under some pressure?

I think it's as simple as Rory playing not to lose. He started hitting good shots again when his lead vanished.

It makes me respect those somewhat boring Tiger rounds when he'd play around even par and let everyone else make unforced errors.

He hit a perfect drive and second shot on 13

I think it's a pretty good schedule. It was weird to have a 2 month gap between Masters & U.S. Open. We now have a pretty nice schedule from March to August.

It just feels too soon when the Open is over in mid-July.  At least we have Ryder Cup this fall.

I didn’t see a ball go in the water. He was also not leading the golf tournament.

Oh and also he’s not Northern Irish, and roughly 8” taller as well.

FFS it’s not bad luck if a hall of fame talent hits a bad shot. The idea was perfect, his execution was not. It’s bad luck if a small earthquake erupts during his backswing, or a fly lands on his nose.

I don’t understand his decision to hit 3 wood today on 13. He needed to keep firing because that is the best kind of Rory when he just keeps going. In fact, the decision to hit as many 3 woods as he did the last few days was very puzzling. It worked out but why have an 8 iron in on a long par 4 when you can have GW? I don’t know if it was Harry or Rory but hit the driver, man. You are the best driver in the world.

Or you hit a nice shot and get a terrible result, like Tom Watson on the 72nd hole of the 2009 Open. Old Tom hit a great shot to the middle of the green and it bounced into a tricky spot behind the green. Cost him the victory.

Rory didn't have any bad luck at 13. It was just a bad shot. Those happen sometimes. I almost wonder if that shot was a half-shank or something. Bizarre to see him go 20 yards right of where he needed to go on such a short shot.

He also didn't go for the green in 2 and played the hole conservatively after playing it super aggressive the rest of the week. Remember the shot from the pine straw?

That's what I mean, it looked like he was just trying to make par.

If he was just trying to make par, the 3rd shot becomes very bizarre. Was it a half-shank? One would think there is no way he was aiming directly at the flag or the edge of the green. It's a massive green. Hit the short wedge shot 40 feet left and get out of there with your par.

Didn't he have a 3 stroke lead at that point? If I remember that correctly, playing it as a 3 shot hole was the smart play.

Laying up to a pin where even a decent third shot funnels to the hole was the right thing to do.

Maybe he missed his number and had 50 yards instead of the 60 or 70 yards he wanted.

Either way, it was a world-class awful chip. Especially as, with a three shot lead, there wasn't a lot of pressure at that point. Worst thing is make a boring par and move on...

Dottie on the course thought he hit it off the toe, if I remember what she said.

But even off the toe, you've got to put it somewhere on an enormous green.

Think he was trying to take the danger out of a tricky 2nd shot but still be aggressive on the 3rd.

really just think it was a half shank, or something with his gap wedge that he finally solved by the playoff hole. He seemed to duff his approaches on 2, 13 and 18 in a similar manner.

"+1+ i.e. Rory playing the 13th as a 3-shotter = IMHO, was a decent strategy ... just poor execution of the wedge shot.

Rory discusses his thought-process w.r.t. 13th hole in his press conference (timestamp ~6m38s).

Truly bizarre shot, very similar to the type of meltdown shots we have seen from Mickelson & Greg Norman through the years. At least McIlroy was able to fight through it and now he's got a career Grand Slam. Those other two guys couldn't get it done, unless Mickelson pulls an absolute miracle at the U.S. Open in the next few years.
