P7CB vs P770 in the short irons

Wondering what kind of differences in terms of feel, forgiveness and such between these 2 irons as the P770 doesn't have the slot until the 7 iron. I have the 2023 P770 full set and the 8-w just feel dead and seeing a decent gap from the 8 to the 7 in terms of distance. Miss is toe side if that makes any difference. Thanks for any advice or thoughts

Curious on this as well. Looking to get a set if 770s but keep hearing of big gaps once the speed slot is gone. Anyone go full p770 then end up combing with p7cb in the short irons?

So keep in mind I only carry seven sticks in all, full time; but…

I was (for irons) 2020 p770 pw, 8i, 6i, 2020 p790 4i. All same KBS $-taper 120g. I absolutely love love love my 6i and 4i. Fantastic clubs. No interest in even updating to current/most recent models.

I never liked the p770 short irons. Way too much unneeded height and spin for me, and never any pop, no boring through the elements whatsoever.—No authority (on centered strikes). Just an over-spinning, unnecessary soft-trampoline type feel. Hated the Pw especially. Don’t think I can recall one shot I hit with it that felt right and was pleasing to my eye.

I’m a one wedge guy, do everything from 110/115 and in with my 54*; I wanted that for 115-140+ from out of my Pw. No chance. The p770 just sky-floated 130 all day long, no matter what. And again, no oomph to it.

So I replaced it with a 2023 p7mb 9i (same shaft). One of the best equipment changes I ever made. Fantastic club. Solved my problems, got me what I wanted. (First five swings on course: five GIRs, almost holing out two from 125-130 range!) It does everything I ask of it (assuming a good swing!) from 115-150. Much better mid-high ball flight, still plenty height when/if I need it, ideal spin, bores through the elements—big time—when well struck; if I ask for 5, 7 yards extra, I get it with authority (again, as opposed to that even higher, even spinnier floaty thing from the p770 Pw—that would LOSE yardage); and, most importantly, the p7mb 9i looks so good/inspiring at address (and in my bag!).

Next up was the p770 8i I wasn’t happy with. That spot is ideally for 155-170 coverage; the club’s specs should have met that. At stock, I was getting 145, 150 floaters. Bent it strong…got little better. And again—no authority on centered strikes. Tried the 2024 p770 8i. Better, less floaty, more what I expected distance-wise…but I hate the thicker sole they’ve gone too (it just looks wrong and excessive, uninspiring and in the way, to me. It looks like it wants to be hit fat.), and felt it still lacked authority when well struck. (FWIW, my p770 6i and p790 4i ARE authoritative when middled (with some great ball speed-retention when not!).) —So I picked up a ‘23 p7mb 7i, bent two degrees weak to 36*. Love it. Definitely way, way more punishing on a low toe ball…but again: so good looking (my tools HAVE to look good to me), responsive, authoritative. (Although no almost-hole outs to report yet!)

So now, for irons, I’m ‘23 p7mb 9i and 7i (@ 36*), ‘20 p770 6i, ‘20 p790 4i (driver, 54*, putter round me out). Got everything I need.

Seeing as I loved the p7mb 9i so much, I went straight there for the weak 7i, and so never so much as held a p7mc or -cb—so can’t help there.

I’ll add: the speed-slot p770s (at least before the wider sole I don’t like became a thing) are great clubs. The reason I went p7mb 7i over the p770 7i, is only the loft/distance difference. The p7mb at 36* is a 150-165, 170 coverage for me; my p770 6i (at 28*) I’ll play 175-190+, (and absolutely love it); a 33* p770 7i was more club than I wanted for my particular needs/setup, and crept too near/basically was a gripped-down three-quarter 6i (a shot I have and enjoy).

Hope some of that helps!

Definitely agree with this in the short irons. I feel like I can hit normal distances in the long irons and the short irons are kind if trailing behind and not going anywhere just spinning a lot. Thinking p7cb combo helps this

I preferred the p7CB in the short irons. Feel was noticeably better as well as control. The p770’s felt clicky to me as if I wasn’t hitting a forged iron

What did you notice distance wise? Were the 770s once the speed slot gone losing distance? I just feel like they spin way too much in the scoring irons
